Photoinduced dissociation of anionic and electron detachment of dianionic gold clusters by use of a laser pointer

Abstract Size-selected anionic and dianionic gold clusters have been stored in a Penning trap and irradiated with the green light of a laser pointer. As examples of special interest, the systems Au 7 − and Au 29 2− have been chosen. In particular, Au 7 − , a small gold cluster with closed electron shell, is observed to decay into Au 6 − and Au 5 − with a decay pathway branching ratio similar to that of Au 9 + . The dianionic cluster Au 29 2− shows electron detachment upon photoexcitation. This observation is in agreement with independent experiments [Stoermer et al., Int. J. Gaia-ESO Survey: Gas dynamics in the Carina nebula through optical emission lines

Aims. We present observations from the Gaia-ESO Survey in the lines of Hα, [N II], [S II], and He I of nebular emission in the central part of the Carina nebula. Methods. We investigate the properties of the two already known kinematic components (approaching and receding), which account for the bulk of emission. Moreover, we investigate the features of the much less known low-intensity high-velocity (absolute RV >50 km s) gas emission. Results. We show that gas giving rise to Hα and He I emission is dynamically well correlated with but not identical to gas seen through forbidden-line emission. Overionization in X-ray spectra: a new paradigm for Mixed-Morphology SNRs

Mixed-morphology SNRs are characterized by a shell-like radio emission, a centrally peaked X-ray morphology, and by interaction with molecular clouds. Many models have been proposed to explain these peculiar remnants, but their physical origin is still unclear. The recent discovery of over-ionized (i. e. recombining) ejecta in 3 mixed-morphology SNRs has dramatically challenged all the previous models and opened up new, unexpected scenarios. Method to compute the stress-energy tensor for a quantized scalar field when a black hole forms from the collapse of a null shell

A method is given to compute the stress-energy tensor for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in a spacetime where a black hole forms from the collapse of a spherically symmetric null shell in four dimensions. Part of the method involves matching the modes for the in vacuum state to a complete set of modes in Schwarzschild spacetime. The other part involves subtracting from the unrenormalized expression for the stress-energy tensor when the field is in the in vacuum state, the corresponding expression when the field is in the Unruh state and adding to this the renormalized stress-energy tensor for the field in the Unruh state. Millimeter wave absorption by confined acoustic modes in CdSe/CdTe core-shell quantum dots

International audience; Taking advantage of the specific core-shell charge separation structure in the CdSe/CdTe core-shell Type-II quantum dots (QDs), we experimentally observed the resonant-enhanced dipolar interaction between millimeter-wave (MMW) photons and their corresponding (l = 1) confined acoustic phonons. With proper choice of size, the absorption band can be tuned to desired frequency of MMW imaging. Exploiting this characteristic absorption, in a fiber-scanned MMW imaging system, we demonstrated the feasibility of CdSe/CdTe QDs as the contrast agents of MMW imaging.
