ERRATUM: “RELIABILITY OF THE DETECTION OF THE BARYON ACOUSTIC PEAK” (2009, ApJ, 696, L93)

2009

Due to an error in applying the passive evolution to transform Mg (z = 0) magnitudes to Mg (z = 0.3), the values of the magnitude limits for the samples DR7-LRG and DR7-LRG-VL quoted in Table 1 were not correct. The corrected Table 1 is appended below. Note that although the redshift limits of the sample DR7-LRG are the same as in Eisenstein et al. (2005), the magnitude limits are therefore slightly shifted (see Table 1). Once this fact is considered, figures and results are completely unaffected. We are very grateful to Eyal Kazin for pointing out the error.

Economic impact of medium-scale battery storage systems in presence of flexible electricity tariffs for end-user applications

2012

This article addresses the question if it is cost-effective to use medium-scale battery storage systems for time-of-use (TMO) energy cost applications at a consumer level, assuming flexible electricity tariffs in the Italian electricity market. TMO application allows customers to reduce their electricity bill charging the storage when off-peak time periods are applied and discharge it during on-peak periods, when electricity energy prices are high. The analysis is carried out taking into account three different electrochemical storage technologies. The economical comparison shows that, at the current costs of storage technologies and at the electricity tariffs currently offered in Italy, th…

Synthesis and characterisation of N-glycosyl amines from the reaction between 4,6-O-benzylidene-D-glucopyranose and substituted aromatic amines and a…

2001

Twelve N-glycosyl amines were synthesised using 4,6-O–benzylidene-D-glucopyranose and different substituted aromatic amines, including some diamines that resulted in bis-glycosyl amines. Another set of six N–glycosyl amines was synthesised using different hexoses and pentoses and 2–(o–aminophenyl)benzimidazole. All compounds were isolated as solid products and purified, their elemental compositions were established, and these were characterised by NMR (1H and 13C), UV–Vis, and FTIR spectroscopy, by FAB mass spectrometry (molecular-ion peaks gave molecular weights), and by their optical rotations. While the protected saccharide, 4,6-O-benzylidene-D-glucopyranose, exists as a mixture of β and…

1H and 13C NMR investigation of the fluxional behavior of η6-(bicyclo[6.1.0]Nona-2,4,6-triene)hexacarbonyldiiron- (FeFe)

1977

Abstract The variable temperature 1 H and 13 C NMR spectra of (C 9 H 10 )Fe 2 (CO) 6 have been recorded. The molecule is fluxional. The high temperature spectra indicate an apparent plane of symmetry bisecting the bound organic ligand, whereas the low temperature limiting spectra are entirely consistent with the asymmetric skew-type structure found in the crystal. Thus the molecule is also properly described in solution as μ-(2-σ,6,7-η:35-η-bicyclo[6.1.0]nonatriene)hexacarbonyldiiron(FeFe). Based on the observed line shape changes of the carbonyl resonances between −140 and −110°C, it is shown that the twitching and not the gliding process is responsible for the relative movement of the F…

On Big Data: How should we make sense of them?

2020

The topic of Big Data is today extensively discussed, not only on the technical ground. This also depends on the fact that Big Data are frequently presented as allowing an epistemological paradigm shift in scientific research, which would be able to supersede the traditional hypothesis-driven method. In this piece, I critically scrutinize two key claims that are usually associated with this approach, namely, the fact that data speak for themselves, deflating the role of theories and models, and the primacy of correlation over causation. In so doing, I will also refer to a recent case history of data mining projects in the field of biomedicine, i.e. EXPOsOMICS. My intention is both to acknow…

Mapreduce in computational biology - A synopsis

2017

In the past 20 years, the Life Sciences have witnessed a paradigm shift in the way research is performed. Indeed, the computational part of biological and clinical studies has become central or is becoming so. Correspondingly, the amount of data that one needs to process, compare and analyze, has experienced an exponential growth. As a consequence, High Performance Computing (HPC, for short) is being used intensively, in particular in terms of multi-core architectures. However, recently and thanks to the advances in the processing of other scientific and commercial data, Distributed Computing is also being considered for Bioinformatics applications. In particular, the MapReduce paradigm, to…

Biphenyl derivatives containing trimethylsilyl benzyl ether or oxime groups as probes for NO2 detection

2016

[EN] Four probes based in the use of a biphenyl moiety and functionalized with trimethylsilyl benzyl ether (P1 and P3) and oxime (P2 and P4) groups have been prepared and tested as optical probes for the detection of NO2. Reaction of NO2 with acetonitrile solutions of P2-P4 resulted in the formation of aldehydes 7 and 8 with a concomitant redshift of the absorption bands. Probe P2 displayed a bathochromic shift of 45 nm upon reaction with NO2 and was able to detect this poisonous gas at concentrations as low as 0.02 ppm. P2 was highly selective against NO2 and other gases (i.e. NO, CO2, H2S, SO2) and vapours of organic solvents (i.e. acetone, hexane, chloroform, acetonitrile or toluene) had…

119Sn-NMR Study on Bis(Tri-Butyltin)oxide Derivatives of Phenolic Compounds

1991

Abstract 119Sn-NMR spectroscopy has been utilized in the characterization of various phenolics as their bis(tri-butyltin)oxide, TBTO, derivatives. The present method has been applied both for determination of simple model compounds and for characterization of complex biopolymeric material originating from spent bleach liquor fractionated by an ultrafiltration technique. Based on the large range of 119Sn-NMR chemical shifts of TBTO derivatives of the phenolic compounds and the similar relaxation properties of 119Sn nuclei located in those derivatives, both qualitative and quantitative analytical conclusions can be drawn.

Teaching Competences Through ICTs in an English Degree Programme in a Spanish Setting

2012

In this chapter I shall describe the ways in which a group of lecturers in English language and linguistics have attempted to help students acquire competencies using ICTs in an English Studies degree programme in Spain. The introduction of competence-based learning constitutes a major paradigm shift brought about by the convergence of degree systems in the European Higher Education Area, and is part of a concerted effort to make our degrees less teacher-centred with a view to giving students greater opportunities to participate in their own learning process, both inside and outside the classroom. I will outline how general and discipline-specific competences are acquired through the use of…
