Activity–Bioavailability balance in Oral Drug Development for a Selected Group of 6‐Fluoroquinolones

2002

Abstract A nomogram is proposed to select the best candidate in drug development studies with quinolones and is intended to substitute other possible models. The nomogram is referred to as an activity–bioavailability balance (ABB) because it includes the following two criteria: ABB= 1 / gm MIC ( drug candidate ) 1 /gm MIC ( ciprofloxacin ) · F calc \( drug candidate \) F calc ( ciproflaxacin ) . The in vitro activity of a group of 4′ N ‐alkyl‐ciprofloxacin derivatives was determined together with that of ciprofloxacin, initially against some reference strains and subsequently against 159 clinical isolates of eight selected species. The inverse of the geometric mean of the lowest concentrati…

Prediction of acute toxicity of organophosphorus pesticides using topological indices

2007

Topological indices were used in the prediction of the acute toxicity (intraperitoneal and oral LD(50)) of organophosphorus pesticides on rats. Models with six variables for the prediction of LD(50)-i.p. (r = 0.849, Q(2) = 0.613) and eight variables for LD(50)-oral (r = 0.906, Q(2) = 0.701) were selected. External group and cross-validation by use of leave-n-out tests were also performed in order to assess the stability and the prediction performance of the selected topological models.

Anti-inflammatory drimane sesquiterpene lactones from an Aspergillus species

2014

Abstract IFN-γ inducible protein 10 (IP-10, CXCL10) is a 10 kDa chemokine, which is secreted from various cell types after exposure to pro-inflammatory stimuli. This chemokine is a ligand for the CXCR3 receptor and regulates immune responses by activating and recruiting leukocytes such as T cells, eosinophils, monocytes, and NK cells to sites of inflammation. Altered expression of CXCL10 has been associated with chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases and therefore CXCL10 represents a promising target for the development of new anti-inflammatory drugs. In a search for inhibitors of CXCL10 promoter activity, three structurally related drimane sesquiterpene lactones (compounds 1–3) were …

Psychological intimate partner violence: the major predictor of posttraumatic stress disorder in abused women.

2004

Intimate partner violence (IPV) significantly impacts women mental and physical wellbeing and therefore represents a worldwide public health problem. A clear association between IPV and increased risk to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been documented. However, few studies examined how different features of IPV (physical, psychological, sexual) interact with other traumatic stress experiences (physical, psychological and sexual childhood abuse and adulthood victimization by other/s than the partner) in determining PTSD. Women abused by the partner (n=75) were compared with non-abused control women (n=52). Information about sociodemographic profile and relevant personal char…

The impact of attachment distress on affect-centered mentalization: An experimental study in psychosomatic patients and healthy adults

2018

Introduction We investigated the impact of attachment distress on affect-centered mentalization in a clinical and a non-clinical sample, comparing mentalization in a baseline condition to mentalization under a condition of attachment distress. Methods The sample consisted of 127 adults who underwent inpatient psychosomatic treatment, and 34 mentally healthy adults. Affect-centered mentalization was assessed by analyzing participants’ narratives on interpersonal situations in a baseline condition with the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale (LEAS), and an experimental condition inducing attachment distress with the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP). Unlike the LEAS, the AAP is…

When Violence Can Appear With Different Male Partners: Identification of Resilient and Non-resilient Women in the European Union

2018

Introduction: Little scholarly attention has been paid to the analysis of the history of intimate partner violence (IPV) against women with different male partners and how it could be related to levels of IPV with the current male partner. From this point of view, been a victim of IPV could increase the vulnerability of women and, therefore, exert a negative influence on the selection of partners over time, thus increasing the odds of potentially mating with abusive male partners. Alternatively, for some women victims of IPV in previous relationships, there may be additional resources that reduce their vulnerability to victimization by new partners. Methodology: The present study analyzes l…

Child-centered and teacher-directed practices in relation to calculation and word problem solving skills

2019

Abstract This study examined transactional associations between classroom-level math skills and teaching practices. Participants were 523 children from 31 classrooms. Math skills were assessed three times. Teaching practices were observed in Grades 1 and 3. Child-centered practices promoted subsequent calculation skills whereas teacher-directed practices were associated with a lower level of calculation skills. Higher problem-solving skills at Grade 2 predicted more child-centered practices and less teacher-directed practices in third grade. Moreover, calculation skills mediated the effect of child-centered practices on problem-solving skills. The results suggest that teaching practices and…

Dominance and leadership in research activities: Collaboration between countries of differing human development is reflected through authorship order…

2017

Introduction Scientific collaboration is an important mechanism that enables the integration of the least developed countries into research activities. In the present study, we use the order of author signatures and addresses for correspondence in scientific publications as variables to analyze the interactions between countries of very high (VHHD), high (HHD), medium (MHD), and low human development (LHD). Methodology We identified all documents published between 2011 and 2015 in journals included in the Science Citation Index-Expanded categories’ of Tropical Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Parasitology, and Pediatrics. We then classified the countries participating in the publications acco…

Sesterterpenes and macrolide derivatives from the endophytic fungus Aplosporella javeedii.

2020

Abstract Five sesterterpenes (1–5) including two new compounds (1 and 2), as well as a new (6) and a known macrolide (7) were isolated from the endophytic fungus Aplosporella javeedii. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by analysis of their 1D and 2D NMR and HRMS data as well as by comparison with the literature. Compound 4 and its acetyl derivatives 4a, 4b, 4c which were prepared by acetylation of 4 exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against the mouse lymphoma cell line L5178Y with IC50 values ranging from 6.2 to 12.8 μM, respectively. Moreover, 4a and 4c exhibited also cytotoxicity against human leukemia (Jurkat J16) and lymphoma (Ramos) cell lines. Compound 7 showed strong …
