Todavía unas palabras sobre las venas cefálica y basílica
1993
Ever since 1879, when Josef Hyrtl first formulated his thesis that the names of the cephalic and basilic veins, as applied to the arm veins, were of Arab origin, a discussion began between philologists and historians of medicine as the former defended the Greek source of such denominations whilst the latter shared the view of the Viennese anatomist. The author, after making a critical review of the -relevant works published hitherto, unearthes a text drawn from a Persian manuscript dating back to the 15th century that, in his view, confirms the rigthness of the Viennese anatomist's thesis.
Personal Reasons for Withdrawal from Team Sports and the Influence of Significant others among Youth Athletes
2013
The aim of this study was to identify the main reasons for withdrawal from team sports and to examine the influence of significant others (i.e., coaches, parents, peers, and siblings) in the decision making concerning withdrawal from youth sports. An attempt was also made to compare withdrawal components and the influence of significant others in terms of gender, level of competition and years of involvement in youth sports. The participants in this study were young football (American soccer) (n=397), ice hockey (n=88) and basketball (n=50) players who had terminated their participation in their sports. Principal component analysis was used to reduce the number of withdrawal items and iden…
Temporal Aspects of Team Cognition: A Case Study on Concerns Sharing Within Basketball
2012
This case study investigated team cognition in basketball. The focus was on how concerns in a real match situation were shared among teammates and how the sharedness evolved. The activity of five basketball players (M age = 17.60, SD = 0.89) was studied. The data were collected and processed according to a procedure defined for course-of-action analysis (Theureau, 2003). The results indicated that the instances when all the teammates shared the same typical concern were relatively rare, but temporal analysis revealed two kinds of convergence phenomena (simultaneous and progressive). In conclusion, shared understanding emerged within this team as essentially “local sharing of understanding.”
Making Every "Point" Count: Identifying the Key Determinants of Team Success in Elite Men’s Wheelchair Basketball
2019
Wheelchair basketball coaches and researchers have typically relied on box score data and the Comprehensive Basketball Grading System to inform practice, however, these data do not acknowledge how the dynamic perspectives of teams change, vary and adapt during possessions in relation to the outcome of a game. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the key dynamic variables associated with team success in elite men’s wheelchair basketball and explore the impact of each key dynamic variable upon the outcome of performance through the use of binary logistic regression modelling. The valid and reliable template developed by Francis, Owen and Peters (2019) was used to analyse video footage in S…
Entre l’admiration et la culpabilité : aspects de l’amitié dans les "Mémoires d’une jeune fille rangée"
2017
The character of Elisabeth Mabille, a childhood friend nicknamed “Zaza” becomes symbolic in Simone de Beauvoir’s Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter. Her influence on the writer and her views seems decisive. For the latter, the literary recreation of her friend is a kind of catharsis. Beauvoir transposes the tragic story of Mabille to show the complexity of their relationship and the origin of her calling to be a writer. Through an autobiographical perspective she “resurrects” the prematurely deceased friend to rehabilitate herself and make up for her neglect. This portrayal of Zaza highlights the multidimensionality of friendship and courage of a young woman who paid the highest price in her fig…
The Impact of the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme on Township Hospitals' Utilization and Income Structure in Weifang Prefecture, China
2017
The New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme was gradually introduced from 2003 in China. This paper is based on a representative survey of 24 randomly selected township hospitals in Weifang prefecture over the period 2000-2008. Using a generalized form of differences-in-differences model, it aims to assess the effect of the reform on the utilization and income structure of the township hospitals. The estimations provide three main results linked to the effects of the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme on the behavior of the key stakeholders (households, health care providers and Health Bureau). Firstly, the reform had positive impacts on the utilization of township hospitals, particularly on…
Entrepreneurship on Social Networking Sites: The Roles of Attitude and Perceived Usefulness
2023
Background: Social media platforms are a significant growth opportunity for enterprises, especially for microenterprises, due to the possibility of establishing direct contact with their customers. We investigate the psychological reasons that drive entrepreneurs towards the use of social networking sites (SNSs) for their business, following two important social psychology theories: the theory of planned behaviour and the technology acceptance model. We also tested for two personality traits: openness to experience and dominance. Methods: Data were acquired by examining 325 microentrepreneurs who decided to use either SNSs or traditional sales methods for their businesses. Results and concl…
Nuovi spunti su Benedetto Bacchini e il paratesto editoriale
2021
Three centuries after the death of the Benedictine abbot Benedetto Bacchini (1645-1721), the publication of the proceedings of an important conference dedicated to him has made it possible to reconsider his figure as a religious and intellectual of European rank. Among the aspects worthy of renewed attention, the significant role of the paratextual apparatus emerged, as a privileged area for expressing in deep the historical thought and vision proposed by Bacchini. The editorial paratexts of some of Bacchini’s works that were entrusted to the printing houses without the intervention of the author, edited by scholars who had great esteem and / or had been very close to him, also offer releva…
Synthesis, structure, properties and antimicrobial activity of para trifluoromethyl phenylboronic derivatives
2021
The [2-formyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]boronic acid as well as its benzoxaborole and bis(benzoxaborole) derivatives were obtained and their properties studied. The 2-formyl compound displays an unusual structure in the crystalline state, with a significant twist of the boronic group, whereas in DMSO solution it tautomerizes with formation of a cyclic isomer. All the studied compounds exhibit relatively high acidity as well as a reasonable antimicrobial activity. Docking studies showed interactions of all the investigated compounds with the binding pocket of Candida albicans LeuRS. High activity against Bacillus cereus was determined for the 2-formyl compound as well as for the novel bis(be…
Synthesis and Biological Properties of Benzothiazole, Benzoxazole, and Chromen-4-one Analogues of the Potent Antitumor Agent 2-(3,4-Dimethoxyphenyl)-…
2008
New fluorinated 2-aryl-benzothiazoles, -benzoxazoles, and -chromen-4-ones have been synthesized and their activity against MCF-7 and MDA 468 breast cancer cell lines compared with the potent antitumor benzothiazole 5. Analogues such as 9a, b and 12a, d yielded submicromolar GI50 values in both cell lines; however, none of the new compounds approached 5 in terms of antitumor potency. For 5, binding to the aryl hydrocarbon receptor appeared to be necessary but not sufficient for growth inhibition.
