Four-wave mixing instabilities in telecom fibers

Instabilities in fiber four-wave mixing are investigated, revealing the formation of colliding dispersive shock waves in the normal GVD regime and collective modulation instabilities in the anomalous GVD regime.

We investigate the properties of X-ray emission from accretion shocks in classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs), generated where the infalling material impacts the stellar surface. Both observations and models of the accretion process reveal several aspects that are still unclear: the observed X-ray luminosity in accretion shocks is below the predicted value, and the density versus temperature structure of the shocked plasma, with increasing densities at higher temperature, deduced from the observations, is at odds with that proposed in the current picture of accretion shocks. Long Term Radio Monitoring of SN 1993J

We present our observations of the radio emission from supernova (SN) 1993J, in M 81 (NGC 3031), made with the VLA, from 90 to 0.7 cm, as well as numerous measurements from other telescopes. The combined data set constitutes probably the most detailed set of measurements ever established for any SN outside of the Local Group in any wavelength range. Only SN 1987A in the LMC has been the subject of such an intensive observational program. The radio emission evolves regularly in both time and frequency, and the usual interpretation in terms of shock interaction with a circumstellar medium (CSM) formed by a pre-SN stellar wind describes the observations rather well considering the complexity o…
Imaging of SN 1993J
2005
SN 1993J has been imaged with VLBI, and its angular expansion monitored, for almost ten years. The images show shell-like radio structures with almost circular symmetry. SN 1993J expands according to models of shock excited emission. The angular expansion has a changing deceleration rate and is best modeled with two different slopes. The swept-up mass estimate at an age of 3159 days (∼0.4 M⨀), comparable to the low-mass envelope, favors a binary scenario. The observed spectral index of SN 1993J has slowly flattened since age 1000 days onward (α has changed from −1 to −0.67 at an age of 2820 days).
Relativistic simulations of superluminal sources

Abstract We present numerical simulations of the radio emission from hydrodynamical relativistic jets. The quiescent-state jet emission consists of quasi-periodic knots of high emission, associated with internal recollimation shocks. Superluminal components can be reproduced by introducing a square-wave perturbation in the injection velocity of the jet. Strong interactions of the resulting moving shock and the standing recollimations result in a “drag” and increase in emission of the latter.

The high resolution obtained through the use of VLBI gives an unique opportunity to directly observe the interaction of an expanding radio supernova with its surrounding medium. We present here results from our VLBI observations of the young supernovae SN 1979C, SN 1986J, and SN 2001gd.
Hydrodynamic Modeling of Accretion Shock on CTTSs

High resolution (R ~ 600) X-ray observations of some classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) (TW Hya, BP Tau, V4046 Sgr, MP Mus and RU Lupi) have shown the presence of X-ray plasma at T ~ 2–3 × 106 K and denser than n e ~ 1011 cm-3 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5], which suggests an origin different from the coronal one (n e ~ 1010 cm_3). Stationary models demonstrated that X-ray emission from CTTSs could also be produced by the accreting material [6]. We address this issue with the aid of a time-dependent hydrodynamic numerical model describing the impact of an accretion stream onto the chromosphere of a CTTS (see [7] for more details). Observations of SuperNova Remnants (SNRs) in X-ray and γ-ray bands promise to contribute important information to our understanding of the kinematics of charged particles and magnetic fields in the vicinity of strong non-relativistic shocks and, therefore, the nature of Galactic cosmic rays. The accurate analysis of SNR images collected in different energy bands requires theoretical modeling of synchrotron and inverse Compton emission from SNRs. Aims.
