GIS-based hedonic pricing of landscape

2009

ACL; International audience; Hedonic prices of landscape are estimated in the urban fringe of Dijon (France). Viewshed and its content as perceived at ground level are analyzed from satellite images supplemented by a digital elevation model. Landscape attributes are then fed into econometric models (based on 2,667 house sales) that allows for endogeneity, multicollinearity, and spatial correlations. Results show that when in the line of sight, trees and farmland in the immediate vicinity of houses command positive prices and roads negative prices; if out of sight, their prices are markedly lower or insignificant: the view itself matters. The layout of features in fragmented landscapes comma…

Uncertainties in polarimetric 3D reconstructions of coronal mass ejections

2015

P.P. acknowledges STFC for financial support. Date of Acceptance: 21/01/2015 Aims. The aim of this work is to quantify the uncertainties in the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the location of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) obtained with the so-called polarization ratio technique. The method takes advantage of the different distributions along the line of sight of total (tB) and polarized (pB) brightnesses emitted by Thomson scattering to estimate the average location of the emitting plasma. This is particularly important to correctly identify of CME propagation angles and unprojected velocities, thus allowing better capabilities for space weather forecastings. Methods. To this end, …

Design of Wideband MIMO Car-to-Car Channel Models Based on the Geometrical Street Scattering Model

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: Modelling and Simulation in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/264213 Open access We propose a wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) car-to-car (C2C) channel model based on the geometrical street scattering model. Starting from the geometrical model, a MIMO reference channel model is derived under the assumption of single-bounce scattering in line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) propagation environments. The proposed channel model assumes an infinite number of scatterers, which are uniformly distributed in two rectangular areas located on both sides of the street. Analytical solutions a…

OLSR Mesh Networks for Broadband Access: Enhancements, Implementation and Deployment

2008

In the context of an EU FP6 project, ADHOCSYS, we have developed a reliable and cost-effective solution for broadband Internet access in rural and mountainous areas. This solution is built based on multi-hop wireless mesh networking technologies and covers many aspects such as routing, reliability, QoS, security, self-configuration, self-healing, remote network monitoring, power management etc. In this paper, we present solely the routing aspect of the developed mesh network, focusing on new routing features that have been designed, implemented, and deployed in a real-life operational network. These new features are developed based on an extended version of the OLSR protocol. The test resul…

A novel MIMO car-to-car channel model based on the geometrical curved street scattering model

2012

This paper introduces a novel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) car-to-car (C2C) channel model, which is based on a geometrical curved street scattering model. Starting from the geometrical model, a MIMO reference channel model is derived under the assumption of a combination of single- and double-bounce scattering in line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) propagation environments. The proposed channel model assumes an infinite number of scatterers, which are uniformly distributed on the outer and inner curves of the street. Expressions are presented for the three-dimensional (3D) space-time cross-correlation function (CCF), the temporal autocorrelation function (ACF), and the two-dimen…

Urban Orienteering Competitions – A Unique Activity of Didactic Communication

2014

Abstract The aim of our project was to deepen understanding of the legacy of our predecessors, which are to be found in the historical centre of Sibiu, to develop map reading skills using the techniques and rules of orienteering. Most students participated enthusiastically in the search for historical sights and found the activity extremely attractive. Moreover, both the preparation stage, when the students learnt all together or in groups how to use a map in order to locate the historical sights, and the follow-up stage, when they disseminated the results, contributed to developing team spirit and a sense of belonging. Communication among students and with the form teacher also improved an…

Beyond MAYA for game-changing multisensory design

2017

With information technology becoming ever more embedded in our surrounding everyday things, the nature of interactions and the way we experience digitalization is becoming increasingly embodied. Thus, growing effort is placed on examining the multisensory nature of interaction experience. From a design perspective, increased knowledge of how people experience materials and how to design to encourage varying material experiences opens new opportunities for the generation of rich multisensory user experience, and accomplishing game-changing results. In particular, the innovation space opened up by understanding people's material expectations of designs is significant. An experiment (N = 78) w…

Novel clinical insights into spinal hemangioblastoma in adults: a systematic review

2021

ABSTRACT Background Hemangioblastomas are well vascularized, benign CNS tumors and the third most common primary spinal cord tumor after astrocytoma/ependymoma, occurring sporadically or as a part of an autosomal dominant von Hippel-Lindau disease in which tumors are often multiple and prone to relapse. Spinal hemangioblastomas are commonly located in the cervical cord and associated with a syrinx formation. Due to location and growth trends, they may cause significant neurological deficit, impairing patient quality of life. We conducted a systematic review to understand better clinical insights of spinal hemangioblastoma in adults and compare spinal hemangioblastoma versus posterior crania…

Deep Non-Line-of-Sight Reconstruction

2020

The recent years have seen a surge of interest in methods for imaging beyond the direct line of sight. The most prominent techniques rely on time-resolved optical impulse responses, obtained by illuminating a diffuse wall with an ultrashort light pulse and observing multi-bounce indirect reflections with an ultrafast time-resolved imager. Reconstruction of geometry from such data, however, is a complex non-linear inverse problem that comes with substantial computational demands. In this paper, we employ convolutional feed-forward networks for solving the reconstruction problem efficiently while maintaining good reconstruction quality. Specifically, we devise a tailored autoencoder architect…

Variable X-ray emission from the accretion shock in the classical T Tauri star V2129 Ophiuchi

2011

The soft X-ray emission from high density plasma in CTTS is associated with the accretion process. It is still unclear whether this high density cool plasma is heated in the accretion shock, or if it is coronal plasma fed/modified by the accretion process. We conducted a coordinated quasi-simultaneous optical and X-ray observing campaign of the CTTS V2129 Oph (Chandra/HETGS data to constrain the X-ray emitting plasma components, and optical observations to constrain the characteristics of accretion and magnetic field). We analyze a 200 ks Chandra/HETGS observation of V2129 Oph, subdivided into two 100 ks segments, corresponding to two different phases within one stellar rotation. The X-ray …
