A narrowband MIMO car-to-car channel model based on the geometrical street scattering model

2012

In this paper, we model a narrowband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) car-to-car (C2C) channel model based on the geometrical street scattering model. Starting from the geometrical model, a MIMO reference channel model is derived under the assumption of single-bounce scattering in line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) propagation environments. In the proposed channel model, an infinite number of scatterers are uniformly distributed in rectangular grids located on both sides of the street. Analytical solutions are presented for the three-dimensional (3D) space-time cross-correlation function (CCF), the temporal autocorrelation function (ACF), and the two-dimensional (2D) space CCF. An …

Dynamics and Limits of Regulatory Privatization: Reorganizing audit oversight in Russia

2019

Accounting and auditing are often cited as key sites where business regulation has been privatized, globalized and neoliberalized. Yet, these sites have also undergone a legitimacy crisis in recent years, marked by a shift from self-regulation to increased public oversight. This paper investigates these developments by reference to the evolution of a public/private audit oversight regime (audit of the auditors) in Russia. We show how, in the early stages of post-Soviet reforms, old state-administered forms of financial oversight were replaced with market-oriented arrangements (peer reviews) offered by newly founded private professional accountancy associations as a service to their members.…

External investigations and disciplinary sanctions against auditors: the impact on audit quality

2015

In this paper, we provide empirical evidence for the impact of disciplinary sanctions imposed on Spanish auditing firms and their engagement partners. The disciplinary sanctions resulted from external investigations, which revealed misapplications of auditing standards. In particular, we evaluate (a) the efficacy of the external supervisory board in identifying low-quality auditors and (b) the effectiveness of the disciplinary system in improving the quality of subsequent statutory audits performed by the sanctioned auditors. We employ two earnings management indicators as proxies for audit quality: loss avoidance through extraordinary items and abnormal accruals. And we compare these measu…

How to develop strategies of adaptation to climate change based on a foresight exercise?

2019

Context and purpose of the study ‐ Prospective studies raise a real intellectual interest for those who contribute to them or take cognizance of it. But they are often considered too difficult to operationalize, and most of the prospective exercises are not followed by action plans, particularly at value chain level. To overcome this difficulty in linking the work of experts and the decisions of stakeholder of value chains, a particular effort was made to operationalize the outcomes from a prospective study on the French vine and wine industry in the context of climate change. The approach consisted in collecting and using the feed‐back of professionalsfrom the wine industry about these out…

Language as an “Indispensable Tool and Organ” of Reason: Intuition, Concept and Word in Schopenhauer

2020

On the first sight, Schopenhauer’s theory of language seems to be a rather simple instrumental one: Language is a means to convey information to others by sensual, vocal or written signs. However, Schopenhauer also argues that the real empirical object is the basis of a concept, which is abstracted from the former leaving out most of its properties and keeping the “essential” ones. In this paper, it is shown that Schopenhauer’s view on language cannot be reduced to an instrumental theory of language. Such a reduction would be really surprising in view of Schopenhauer’s style of writing and his critique of language.

Centre-to-limb variation of photospheric facular radiance and image resolution

2005

Abstract We study the effect of the angular resolution on the determination of the angular properties of the facular radiance. We analyze photospheric intensity in the continuum, around the Ni 676.8 nm line, and longitudinal magnetic field along the line of sight, measured by the MDI instrument aboard SOHO with two spatial resolutions, 4″ and 1.2″ (2″ and 0.6″ pixels, respectively). The effect of the limited photometric sensitivity of the instrument and the limited information on the angular structure of the magnetic field tubes are considered. Our study of the high-resolution data shows that intensity contrast of magnetic features between 80 and 600 Gauss increases from centre to limb up t…

More on the determination of the coronal heating function from Yohkoh data

2002

Two recent works have analyzed a solar large and steady coronal loop observed with Yohkoh/SXT in two filter passbands to infer the distribution of the heating along it. Priest et al. (2000) modelled the distribution of the temperature obtained from filter ratio method with an analytical approach, and concluded that the heating was uniform along the loop. Aschwanden (2001) found that a uniform heating led to an unreasonably large plasma column depth along the line of sight, and, using a two component loop model, that a footpoint-heated model loop (with a minor cool component) yields more acceptable physical solutions. We revisit the analysis of the same loop system, considering conventional …

ChandraObservation of Cir X‐1 near the Periastron Passage: Evidence for an X‐Ray Jet?

2008

We present the results of a 25 ks long Chandra observation of the peculiar source Cir X-1 near the periastron passage. We report precise X-ray coordinates of the source, which were compatible with the optical and radio counterpart coordinates. We focus on the study of the detected emission features using the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on board the Chandra satellite. We detect emission lines associated with Mg XII, Si XIII, Si XIV, S XV, S XVI, Ar XVII, Ar XVIII, Ca XIX, Ca XX, Fe XXV, and Fe XXVI, showing an average redshift of 470 km s-1. The most intense emission features can be fitted with two lines; this is more evident for the 6.6 keV emission feature, which shows a …
