The strangeness content of the nucleon from effective field theory and phenomenology

2014

We revisit the classical relation between the strangeness content of the nucleon, the pion-nucleon sigma term and the $SU(3)_F$ breaking of the baryon masses in the context of Lorentz covariant chiral perturbation theory with explicit decuplet-baryon resonance fields. We find that a value of the pion-nucleon sigma term of $\sim$60 MeV is not necessarily at odds with a small strangeness content of the nucleon, in line with the fulfillment of the OZI rule. Moreover, this value is indeed favored by our next-to-leading order calculation. We compare our results with earlier ones and discuss the convergence of the chiral series as well as the uncertainties of chiral approaches to the determinatio…

Baryon masses and nucleon sigma terms in manifestly Lorentz-invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory

2004

We discuss the masses of the ground state baryon octet and the nucleon sigma terms in the framework of manifestly Lorentz-invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. In order to obtain a consistent power counting for renormalized diagrams the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme is applied.

Do current data prefer a nonminimally coupled inflaton?

2015

We examine the impact of a non-minimal coupling of the inflaton to the Ricci scalar, $\frac12 \xi R\phi^2$, on the inflationary predictions. Such a non-minimal coupling is expected to be present in the inflaton Lagrangian on fairly general grounds. As a case study, we focus on the simplest inflationary model governed by the potential $V\propto \phi^2$, using the latest combined 2015 analysis of Planck and BICEP2/Keck Array. We find that the presence of a coupling $\xi$ is favoured at a significance of $99\%$ CL, assuming that nature has chosen the potential $V\propto \phi^2$ to generate the primordial perturbations and a number of e-foldings $N=60$. Within the context of the same scenario, …

Role of theΔ*(1940)in theπ+p→K+Σ+(1385)andpp→nK+Σ+(1385)reactions

2014

The pp -> nK(+)Sigma(+)(1385) reaction is a very good isospin 3/2 filter for studying Delta(++)* resonance decaying to K+Sigma(+)(1385). Within the effective Lagrangian method, we investigate the Sigma (1385) (spin parity J(P) = 3/2(+)) hadronic production in the pi(+) p -> K+Sigma(+)(1385) and pp -> nK(+)Sigma(+)(1385) reactions. For the pi(+) p -> K+Sigma(+)(1385) reaction, in addition to the "background" contributions from t-channel K*(0) exchange and u-channel Lambda(1115) and Sigma(0)(1193) exchange, we also consider the contribution from the s-channel Delta*(1940) resonance, which has significant coupling to the K Sigma(1385) channel. We show that the inclusion of the Delta*(1940) res…

Double parton interactions inγ+3jet andγ+b/cjet+2jet events inpp¯collisions ats=1.96 TeV

2014

We determine the fraction of events with double parton (DP) Scattering in a single p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV in gamma + 3 jet and gamma + b/c jet + 2 jet events collected with the D0 detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 8.7 fb(-1). The DP fractions and effective cross sections (sigma(eff)) are measured for both event samples using the same kinematic selections. The measured DP fractions range from 0.21 to 0.17, with effective cross sections in the gamma + 3 jet and gamma + b/cjet + 2 jet samples of sigma(incl)(eff) = 12.7 +/- 0.2(stat) +/- 1.3(syst) mb and sigma(HF)(eff) = 14.6 +/- 0.6(stat) +/- 3.2(syst) mb, respectively.

Probing the neutrino mass hierarchy with Super-Kamiokande

2012

We show that for recently discovered large values of theta(13), a superbeam with an average neutrino energy of ~ 5 GeV, such as those being proposed at CERN, if pointing to Super-Kamiokande (L = 8770 km), could reveal the neutrino mass hierarchy at 5 sigma in less than two years irrespective of the true hierarchy and CP phase. The measurement relies on the near resonant matter effect in the numu to nue oscillation channel, and can be done counting the total number of appearance events with just a neutrino beam.

Measurement of the tt¯ production cross section using dilepton events in pp¯ collisions

2011

We present a measurement of the a production cross section sigma((u) over bar) in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using 5.4 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector. We consider final states with at least two jets and two leptons (ee, e mu, mu mu), and events with one jet for the e mu final state as well. The measured cross section is sigma((u) over bar) = 7.36(-0.79)(+0.90)(stat + syst) pb. This result combined with the cross section measurement in the lepton + jets final state yields sigma((u) over bar) = 7.56(-0.56)(+0.63)(stat + syst) pb, which agrees with the standard model expectation. The relative precision of 8% of this measurement is comparable …
