Measurements of Absolute Cross Sections for (e,H2) Collision Processes. Formation and Decay ofH2−Resonances

1970

Energy and angular dependences of the elastic and inelastic scattering of electrons from ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ have been measured in the energy range 10 to 16 eV and for scattering angles ranging from 10\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to 120\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}. Three resonance series have been investigated starting at 11.30, 11.50, and 13.63 eV, respectively. The last two series decay preferentially into one single electronic channel, while the first resonance (resonance I) decays into all energetically possible exit channels, i.e., $X^{1}\ensuremath{\Sigma}_{g}^{+}$, $b^{3}\ensuremath{\Sigma}_{u}^{+}$, $B^{1}\ensuremath{\Sigma}_{u}^{+}$. Throughout, stress is laid on the i…

Neutrino induced weak pion production off the nucleon and coherent pion production in nuclei at low energies

2009

We present a microscopic model for neutrino induced one-pion production off the nucleon and its implementation for the purpose of calculating coherent pion production in nuclei. We further criticize the use of the Rein--Sehgal model for coherent pion production by low energy neutrinos. In particular, we show how the approximations in that model give rise to a much flatter differential cross section in the $\eta=E_\pi(1-\cos\theta_\pi)$ variable. We discuss the limitations intrinsic to any approach based on the partial conservation of the axial current hypothesis and the inability of such models to properly determine the angular distribution of the outgoing pion with respect to the direction…

Anomaly and global inconsistency matching: θ angles, SU(3)/U(1)2 nonlinear sigma model, SU(3) chains, and generalizations

2018

We discuss the SU(3)/[U(1)×U(1)] nonlinear sigma model in 1+1D and, more broadly, its linearized counterparts. Such theories can be expressed as U(1)×U(1) gauge theories and therefore allow for two topological θ angles. These models provide a field theoretic description of the SU(3) chains. We show that, for particular values of θ angles, a global symmetry group of such systems has a 't Hooft anomaly, which manifests itself as an inability to gauge the global symmetry group. By applying anomaly matching, the ground-state properties can be severely constrained. The anomaly matching is an avatar of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem for the spin chain from which the field theory descends, …

Renormalization group analysis of thermal transport in the disordered Fermi liquid

2014

We present a detailed study of thermal transport in the disordered Fermi liquid with short-range interactions. At temperatures smaller than the impurity scattering rate, i.e., in the diffusive regime, thermal conductivity acquires non-analytic quantum corrections. When these quantum corrections become large at low temperatures, the calculation of thermal conductivity demands a theoretical approach that treats disorder and interactions on an equal footing. In this paper, we develop such an approach by merging Luttinger's idea of using gravitational potentials for the analysis of thermal phenomena with a renormalization group calculation based on the Keldysh nonlinear sigma model. The gravita…

The Nonlinear σ Model

1989

The nonlinear (principal) σ model has been for a long time a theoretical laboratory to test different approaches for quantizing classical field theories. Here we shall discuss as an application of the current algebra representation theory a construction of the quantized σ model.

Near-dissociation photoassociative production of deeply bound NaCs molecules

2010

We demonstrate that a photoassociation resonance detuned less than a wave number below the Cs 6 {sup 2}P{sub 3/2} atomic line can be used to create a deeply bound molecular sample of ultracold polar NaCs. We assign 1 {sup 1}{Sigma}{sup +} (v=4,5,6,11,19) vibrational levels utilizing a pulsed depletion spectroscopic method (scanning {approx}700 cm{sup -1} at a time) in which we observe the 1 {sup 1}{Sigma}{sup +}{yields}2 {sup 1}{Sigma}{sup +}-1 {sup 3{Pi}} vibrational progression. These data are compared with results from a hot-molecule collision-enhanced laser-induced fluorescence experiment and shown to be in good agreement. This technique is a powerful tool to experimentally determine th…

Magnetoelectric effects in superconductors due to spin-orbit scattering : Nonlinear σ-model description

2021

We suggest a generalization of the nonlinear σ model for diffusive superconducting systems to account for magnetoelectric effects due to spin-orbit scattering. In the leading orders of spin-orbit strength and gradient expansion, it includes two additional terms responsible for the spin-Hall effect and the spin-current swapping. First, assuming a delta-correlated disorder, we derive the terms from the Keldysh path integral representation of the generating functional. Then we argue phenomenologically that they exhaust all invariants allowed in the effective action to the leading order in the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Finally, the results are confirmed by a direct derivation of the saddle-poi…

Brief Communication HUMAN SCALP RECORDED SIGMA ACTIVITY IS MODULATED BY SLOW EEG OSCILLATIONS DURING DEEP SLEEP

2002

The EEG during deep sleep exhibits a distinct cortically generated slow oscillation of around and below 1 Hz which can be distinguished from other delta (0.5-3.5 Hz) activity. Intracranial studies showed that this slow oscillation triggers and groups cortical network firing. In the present study, we examined whether the phases of the slow oscillation during sleep stage 4 are correlated with the magnitude of sigma (12-16 Hz) and gamma (> 20 Hz) scalp activity. For this purpose, 10-min segments of uninterrupted stage 4 sleep EEG from 9 subjects were analyzed by applying wavelet techniques. We found that scalp recorded sigma, but not gamma, activity is modulated by the phases of the slow oscil…
