Degrees of freedom and the phase transitions of two-flavor QCD

We study two effective models for QCD, the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio -model and the linear sigma model extended by including a Polyakov loop potential, which is fitted to reproduce the pure gauge theory thermodynamics, and a coupling between the chiral fields and the Polyakov loop. Thus the resulting models have as relevant degrees of freedom the Polyakov loop and chiral fields. By comparing the extended models with the bare chiral models we can conclude that the addition of the Polyakov loop is necessary in order to obtain both qualitative and quantitative agreement with known results at finite temperatures. Massive color-octet bosons and the charge asymmetries of top quarks at hadron colliders

Several models predict the existence of heavy colored resonances decaying to top quarks in the TeV energy range that might be discovered at the LHC. In some of those models, moreover, a sizable charge asymmetry of top versus antitop quarks might be generated. The detection of these exotic resonances, however, requires selecting data samples where the top and the antitop quarks are highly boosted, which is experimentally very challenging. We asses that the measurement of the top quark charge asymmetry at the LHC is very sensitive to the existence of excited states of the gluon with axial-vector couplings to quarks. Hidden charmNandΔresonances with heavy-quark symmetry

c and one c quarks). We analyze several possible sectors and, for the sector with zero net charm, we write down the most general Lagrangian consistent with SU(3) and heavy quark spin symmetry. We explicitly study theN andstates, which are produced from theS-wave interaction of pseudoscalar and vector mesons with 1/2 + and 3/2 + baryons within the charmless and strangeless hidden charm sector. We predict seven odd parityN-like and five �-like states with masses around 4GeV, most of them as bound states. These states form heavy-quark spin multiplets, which are almost degenerate in mass. Effective models of two-flavor QCD: from small towards large $m_q$

We study effective models of chiral fields and Polyakov loop expected to describe the dynamics responsible for the phase structure of two-flavor QCD. We consider the chiral sector described either using a linear sigma model or a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and study how these models, on the mean-field level when coupled with the Polyakov loop, behave as a function of increasing bare quark (or pion) mass. We find qualitatively similar behaviors for the cases of the linear sigma model and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and, by comparing with existing lattice data, show that one cannot conclusively decide which of the two approximate symmetries drives the phase transitions at the physical point.
Charmed baryon resonances with heavy-quark symmetry

We study charmed baryon resonances that are generated dynamically from a coupled-channel unitary approach that implements heavy-quark symmetry. Some states can already be identified with experimental observations, such as $\Lambda_c(2595)$,$\Lambda_c(2660)$, $\Sigma_c(2902)$ or $\Lambda_c(2941)$, while others need a compilation of more experimental data as well as an extension of the model to include higher order contributions. We also compare our model to previous SU(4) schemes.
Top quark mass measurements in ATLAS

The top quark is a fundamental constituent of the Standard Model (SM). The properties of this quark are accurately predicted by this theory, except for its mass, which remains a fundamental parameter of the SM. With the advent of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), many million of top-antitop quark pairs are available for study. With such statistics, the physics of the top quark has entered the precision era. In this note, the most recent experimental results by ATLAS concerning the top quark mass are reported.
Top physics studies at the LHC in the standard model and beyond with the ATLAS detector

The LHC will be a Top quark factory, producing large numbers of Top quarks even at the initial low luminosities. This will enable a rich program of Top quark Physics to be explored, both within the Standard Model and using Top quarks as probes of Physics Beyond the Standard Model. Recent studies from ATLAS will be presented, including prospects for the measurements of the production of Top pairs and single Top production, angular correlations in the Top decay, and the precision measurement of the Top quark mass. The search for Physics beyond the Standard Model will be illustrated with searches for rare Top decays involving Flavour Changing Neutral Currents, and the reconstruction of tt-bar …
Study of the strongΣb→ΛbπandΣb*→Λbπin a nonrelativistic quark model

We present results for the strong widths corresponding to the $\Sigma_b\to \Lambda_b\, \pi$ and $\Sigma_b^{*}\to \Lambda_b\, \pi$ decays. We apply our model in Ref. Phys. Rev. D 72, 094022 (2005) where we previously studied the corresponding transitions in the charmed sector. Our non-relativistic constituent quark model uses wave functions that take advantage of the constraints imposed by heavy quark symmetry. Partial conservation of axial current hypothesis allows us to determine the strong vertices from an analysis of the axial current matrix elements.
