Advanced Statistical Tools for Six Sigma and other Industrial Applications

Six Sigma is a methodological approach and philosophy for quality improvement in operations management; its main objectives are identifying and removing the causes of defects, and minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes. To do so, Six Sigma combines managerial and statistical tools, with the creation of a dedicated organizational structure. In this doctoral thesis and the three years of study and research, we have had the purpose to advance the potential applications of the methodology and its tools; with a specific attention on issues and challenges that typically prevent the realization of the expected financial and operational gains that a company pursue in applyin…

Sigma-convergence in the OECD: Transitional Dynamics or Narrowing Steady State Differences?

2002

The empirical literature of growth has steadly improved the econometric methods used mainly to address the effect of cross-country heterogeneity in the estimated convergence rate. In this paper, we highlight an important implication of this process of econometric refinement that has so far received little attention. We show that the picture that emerges from models that allow for generalised heterogeneity changes our view of the process of convergence within the OECD. Estimation methods that allow for non or partial heterogeneity stress the importance of transitional dynamics in the process of convergence. Thus sigma-convergence is mostly accounted for by beta-convergence. On the contrary, …

A new palladium(II)-catalyzed [3,3] aza-Claisen rearrangement of 3-allyloxy-5-aryl-1,2,4-oxadiazoles

2011

Abstract A new efficient palladium(II)-catalyzed [3,3] aza-Claisen, formal sigmatropic rearrangement of 3-allyloxy-5-aryl-1,2,4-oxadiazoles was developed. The mechanism was studied by analyzing the regiochemical and stereochemical course of the reaction. The results obtained indicated the intervention of a cationic pallada-cycle similar to the one postulated for the Cope rearrangement of 1,5-dienes.

1H, 13C and 15N NMR study of 2-alkylnitrosoamino-4-nitropyridines and N-oxides: An example on restricted inversion of sp3 nitrogen

2007

Abstract The 1 H, 13 C and 15 N NMR chemical shifts of seven 2-alkylnitrosoamino-4-nitropyridines and seven 2-alkylnitrosoamino-4-nitropyridine N -oxides have been assigned. The GIAO/DFT 13 C chemical shifts of energetically optimized structures have been calculated. The results were compared to the chemical shifts of previously studied 2-alkylamino and 2-alkylnitramino derivatives of 4-nitropyridine and 4-nitropyridine N -oxide. In sterically crowded ortho -substituted congener (2-ethylnitrosoamino-3-methyl-4-nitropyridine N -oxide) restricted inversion of pyramidal amino nitrogen forms a chiral center in the molecule and makes the geminal protons of N–CH 2 -moiety diastereotopic. In 5- an…

Rearrangement products of 3-methanesulfonyl-N-methyl-N-nitroaniline.

2003

Two isomeric products (C 8 H 10 N 2 O 4 S) of the rearrangement of 3-methanesulfonyl-N-methyl-N-nitroaniline have been investigated, viz. 3-methanesulfonyl-N-methyl-2-nitroaniline, which was the main product of the rearrangement, and 5-methanesulfonyl-N-methyl-2-nitroaniline. In both molecules, the aromatic rings are appreciably deformed towards ortho-quinonoidal geometry by electronic and steric interactions. The crystal structure is stabilized, in both cases, by weak C-H...O hydrogen bonds.

Bond-based 3D-chiral linear indices: Theory and QSAR applications to central chirality codification

2008

The recently introduced non-stochastic and stochastic bond-based linear indices are been generalized to codify chemical structure information for chiral drugs, making use of a trigonometric 3D-chirality correction factor. These improved modified descriptors are applied to several well-known data sets to validate each one of them. Particularly, Cramer's steroid data set has become a benchmark for the assessment of novel quantitative structure activity relationship methods. This data set has been used by several researchers using 3D-QSAR approaches such as Comparative Molecular Field Analysis, Molecular Quantum Similarity Measures, Comparative Molecular Moment Analysis, E-state, Mapping Prope…

Universal relationship between the penetration depth and the normal-state conductivity in YBaCuO

1999

The absolute values of the conductivity in the normal state sigma_n and of the low temperature penetration depths lambda(0) were measured for a number of different samples of the YBaCuO family. We found a striking correlation between sigma_n and 1/lambda^2, regardless of doping, oxygen reduction or defects, thus providing a simple method to predict the superconducting penetration depth and to have an estimate of the sample quality by measuring the normal-state conductivity.

Phase Slip Phenomena in Ultra-Thin Superconducting Wires

2006

We present results on phase-slip phenomena in a superconducting wire which can be considered as quasi-one dimensional (1D) if its characteristic transverse dimension \( \sqrt \sigma\) (√ being the cross section) is smaller than the coherence length Λ(T). The shape of the bottom part of the resistive transition R(T) of a 1D superconducting strip is described by the model of phase slips activation. If the wire is infinitely long, then there is always a finite probability that a small part of the sample is instantly driven normal.
