Simulation of vapor-liquid coexistence in finite volumes: a method to compute the surface free energy of droplets.

2009

When a fluid at a constant density $\ensuremath{\rho}$ in between the densities of coexisting vapor $({\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\text{v}})$ and liquid $({\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\ensuremath{\ell}})$ at temperatures below criticality is studied in a (cubic) box of finite linear dimension $L$, phase separation occurs in this finite volume, provided $L$ is large enough. For a range of densities, one can observe a liquid droplet (at density ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ slightly exceeding ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}$) coexisting in stable thermal equilibrium with surrounding vapor (with density ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\text{v}}^{\ensuremath{'}}g{\ensuremath{\rho}}…

Implementation of a two stage fully-blind self-adapted spectrum sensing algorithm

2017

In this paper, an experimental validation of a combined two-stage detector called 2EMC is carried out. The detector is proposed in [1]. The 2EMC is composed of energy detector as a primary stage and maximum-minimum eigenvalue detector as a secondary stage. The 2EMC outperforms the two individual detectors in terms of the probability of detection for the same probability of false alarm. Regarding the complexity measured in the sensing time, the 2EMC sensing time is bounded by the sensing times of the two individual detectors. 2EMC incorporates noise estimation that is used by the energy detector, which makes it fully-blind and self-adapted detector. The noise estimator performance is express…

Photoplethysmography in dogs and cats: a selection of alternative measurement sites for a pet monitor.

2018

Objective Photoplethysmography (PPG) is an increasingly popular health and well-being tool for monitoring heart rate and oxygen saturation. Due to the pigmentation and hairiness of dogs and cats, a pulse oximeter is routinely placed solely on the tongue. As this approach is feasible only for pet monitor use during surgical procedures, we investigate PPG signal quality on several other measurement sites that would be better tolerated by conscious animals. Approach Acquired PPG signals are analyzed by four signal quality indices: mean baseline, signal power, kurtosis, and tolerance score. Main results In dogs, the metacarpus and tail can be substituted for oral pulse oximeter placement since …

Interictal cardiorespiratory variability in temporal lobe and absence epilepsy in childhood

2015

It is well known that epilepsy has a profound effect on the autonomic nervous system, especially on the autonomic control of heart rate and respiration. This effect has been widely studied during seizure activity, but less attention has been given to interictal (i.e. seizure-free) activity. The studies that have been done on this topic, showed that heart rate and respiration can be affected individually, even without the occurrence of seizures. In this work, the interactions between these two individual physiological variables are analysed during interictal activity in temporal lobe and absence epilepsy in childhood. These interactions are assessed by decomposing the predictive information …

Development of a low-cost piezo film-based knock sensor

2003

It is well known that spark advance is a key parameter in spark ignition engine management. Increasing fuel cost and emission regulation strictness require a higher engine efficiency, which can be improved by an accurate regulation of the spark advance. Under high load conditions, an optimal spark advance choice leads the engine to run next to the knock limit, so the management and control system needs to be equipped with a knock sensor in order to preserve the engine from damage. The authors developed a low-cost knock sensor whose sensing element is a thin washer of polyvinylidine fluoride (PVDF), a fluoropolymer characterized by a great piezoelectric e ect if polarized. The sensor has be…

Space variant vision and pipelined architecture for time to impact computation

2002

Image analysis is one of the most interesting ways for a mobile vehicle to understand its environment. One of the tasks of an autonomous vehicle is to get accurate information of what it has in front, to avoid collision or find a way to a target. This task requires real-time restrictions depending on the vehicle speed and external object movement. The use of normal cameras, with homogeneous (squared) pixel distribution, for real-time image processing, usually requires high performance computing and high image rates. A different approach makes use of a CMOS space-variant camera that yields a high frame rate with low data bandwidth. The camera also performs the log-polar transform, simplifyin…

A support vector domain method for change detection in multitemporal images

2010

This paper formulates the problem of distinguishing changed from unchanged pixels in multitemporal remote sensing images as a minimum enclosing ball (MEB) problem with changed pixels as target class. The definition of the sphere-shaped decision boundary with minimal volume that embraces changed pixels is approached in the context of the support vector formalism adopting a support vector domain description (SVDD) one-class classifier. SVDD maps the data into a high dimensional feature space where the spherical support of the high dimensional distribution of changed pixels is computed. Unlike the standard SVDD, the proposed formulation of the SVDD uses both target and outlier samples for defi…

Real-time Sub-pixel Cross Bar Position Metrology

2002

Many measurement application fields need to calculate cross bar intersection locations of horizontal and vertical bars. The system we developed and that we present in this paper is an embedded system that measures cross bar positions with sub-pixel accuracy on 1024×1024 pixel images delivered by a camera at a 50 MHz data rate in real time. This is done using an algorithm that looks for intersection areas and then locally calculates two lines representing horizontal and vertical bars. The two line intersection is considered to be the bar intersection. To achieve real time, we developed a hybrid architecture in which low level processes are implemented into FPGAs and others into DSPs. As a re…

Methodology for the retrieval of vegetation chlorophyll fluorescence from space in the frame of the flex mission preparatory

2016

FLEX (FLuorescence EXperiment) is a candidate mission for the European Space Agency (ESA) Earth Explorer program. The main objective of the mission is the measurement the chlorophyll fluorescence signal emitted by vegetation at the red and far-red spectral regions (roughly 630-770 nm). The current FLEX mission design includes different instruments intended to provide the appropriate characterization of those atmospheric and surface parameters necessary for the retrieval and interpretation of the fluorescence signal. The complete processing chain for the derivation of fluorescence and reflectance products from the radiance data acquired by the different instruments included in the FLEX paylo…

On the Advantages of Asynchronous Pixel Reading and Processing for High-Speed Motion Estimation

2008

Biological visual systems are becoming an interesting source for the improvement of artificial visual systems. A biologically inspired read-out and pixel processing strategy is presented. This read-out mechanism is based on Selective pixel Change-Driven (SCD) processing. Pixels are individually processed and read-out instead of the classical approach where the read-out and processing is based on complete frames. Changing pixels are read-out and processed at short time intervals. The simulated experiments show that the response delay using this strategy is several orders of magnitude lower than current cameras while still keeping the same, or even tighter, bandwidth requirements.
