Stochastic linearization critically re-examined

Abstract The stochastic linearization technique, widely used for the analysis of nonlinear dynamic systems subjected to random excitations, is revisited. It is shown that the standard procedure universally adopted for determining the so-called effective stiffness of the equivalent linear system is erroneous in all previous publications. Two error-free stochastic linearization techniques are elucidated, namely those based on (1) the force linearization and (2) energy linearization.
Analysis of Offshore Knuckle Boom Crane - Part Two: Motion Control

In this paper design of electro-hydraulic motion control systems for offshore knuckle boom cranes is discussed. The influence of the control valve bandwidth along with the ramp time for the control signal are investigated both analytically with simplified system models and numerically with an experimentally verified crane model. The results of both types of investigations are related to general design rules for selection of control valves and ramp times and the relevance of these design rules is discussed. Robust fault tolerant tracking controller design for a VTOL aircraft

This paper deals with the fault tolerant control (FTC) design for a Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) aircraft subject to external disturbances and actuator faults. The aim is to synthesize a fault tolerant controller ensuring trajectory tracking for the nonlinear uncertain system represented by a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) model. In order to design the FTC law, a proportional integral observer (PIO) is adopted which estimate both of the faults and the faulty system states. Based on the Lyapunov theory and ℓ2 optimization, the trajectory tracking performance and the stability of the closed loop system are analyzed. Robust fault-tolerant H∞ control of active suspension systems with finite-frequency constraint

Abstract In this paper, the robust fault-tolerant (FT) H ∞ control problem of active suspension systems with finite-frequency constraint is investigated. A full-car model is employed in the controller design such that the heave, pitch and roll motions can be simultaneously controlled. Both the actuator faults and external disturbances are considered in the controller synthesis. As the human body is more sensitive to the vertical vibration in 4–8 Hz, robust H ∞ control with this finite-frequency constraint is designed. Abstract This paper is concerned with the problems of stability analysis and l2-gain control for a class of two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear stochastic systems with time-varying delays and actuator saturation. Firstly, a convex hull representation is used to describe the saturation behavior, and a sufficient condition for the existence of mean-square exponential stability of the considered system is derived. Experiments with an adaptive Bayesian restoration method

Abstract This paper describes a Bayesian restoration method applied to two-dimensional measured images, whose detector response function is not completely known. The response function is assumed Gaussian with standard deviation depending on the estimate of the local density of the image. The convex hull of the K -nearest neighbours ( K NN) of each ‘on’ pixel is used to compute the local density. The method has been tested on ‘sparse’ images, with and without noise background.
Enclosure method for the p-Laplace equation

We study the enclosure method for the p-Calder\'on problem, which is a nonlinear generalization of the inverse conductivity problem due to Calder\'on that involves the p-Laplace equation. The method allows one to reconstruct the convex hull of an inclusion in the nonlinear model by using exponentially growing solutions introduced by Wolff. We justify this method for the penetrable obstacle case, where the inclusion is modelled as a jump in the conductivity. The result is based on a monotonicity inequality and the properties of the Wolff solutions.
Shape-Based Features for Cat Ganglion Retinal Cells Classification

This article presents a quantitative and objective approach to cat ganglion cell characterization and classification. The combination of several biologically relevant features such as diameter, eccentricity, fractal dimension, influence histogram, influence area, convex hull area, and convex hull diameter are derived from geometrical transforms and then processed by three different clustering methods (Ward’s hierarchical scheme, K-means and genetic algorithm), whose results are then combined by a voting strategy. These experiments indicate the superiority of some features and also suggest some possible biological implications.
Accurate tuning of mismatched twin-core fiber filters

We have demonstrated a reproducible and accurate way of tuning the coupling wavelength of a mismatched twin-core filter. This method allows high quality all-fiber filters to be implemented with low loss at any desired wavelength over a range of few hundred nanometers from the same fiber. An ~500-nm tuning range is demonstrated, limited only by the measurement setup and not by the technique itself. Highly accurate control of the filtering wavelength in combination with control of filtering strength by adjustment of the length of the twin-core fibers allows complex filter profiles to be implemented by cascading of several different filters.
