Perinataalikuolemia on historiallisesti käsitelty poikkeavina ilmiöinä, jotka uhkaavat yhteisön sosiaalista järjestystä, jolloin perinataalivaiheessa kuolleet lapset on tietoisesti ulossuljettu yhteisön rakenteiden ulkopuolelle. Pienen lapsen kuolema on siten ollut pitkään yhteiskunnassa sosiaalisesti tunnistamaton ja tunnustamaton menetys. Tässä tutkielmassani selvitän niitä sosiaalisia ja kulttuurisia prosesseja, jotka ovat vaikuttaneet pienen lapsen kuoleman kohtaamisen käytäntöjen muutokseen.
