EVA copolymer based nanocomposites: rheological behavior under shear and isothermal and non-isothermal elongational flow

2006

Abstract Nanocomposites are a very promising new class of polymer composites that exhibit an interesting combination of chemical, physical and mechanical properties. Only small amounts of nanofiller are sufficient to generate great variation of many properties. This work focuses on the rheological properties of poly[ethylene- co -(vinyl acetate)] (EVA copolymer) based nanocomposites in shear and in isothermal and non-isothermal elongational flow. The nanocomposites, at two different filler contents, were prepared in two different extruders and intercalates were obtained for all the samples. The twin-screw compounder is more efficient. The change of rheological properties, both in shear and …

Abstract The preparation method of a polymer composite and the filler loading are amongst the factors that influence the properties of the final composites. This article studies the effect of these factors on the thermal stability and thermal degradation kinetics of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/mesoporous silica (MCM-41) composites filled with small amounts of MCM-41. The PMMA/MCM-41 composites were prepared through in situ polymerisation and melt mixing methods, with MCM-41 loadings of 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt.%. The presence of MCM-41 increased the thermal stability of PMMA/MCM-41 composites prepared by melt mixing, but in the case of the in situ polymerised samples, the MCM-41 accelerate…

Distribution of molecularly imprinted polymer layers on macroporous silica gel particles by STEM and EDX

2005

Abstract Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in parallel and scanning mode (STEM) combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) the distribution of molecularly imprinted polymer layers covalently grafted on the inner and outer surface of macroporous silica gel particles was observed. The grafting was achieved using a special initiator system ( iniferter ) and applied on a well known model system producing molecularly imprinted layers with l -phenyl alanine analide ( l -PA) as template. By staining the sample with RuO 4 before its embedment in epoxy resin and cutting ultra thin slices it was possible to identify the stained grafted polymer on the silica matrix by EDX. Bas…

Mesoporous silica-based materials for use in biosensors

2012

Abstract There have been great advancements in the development of biosensors capable of characterizing and quantifying biomolecules. This article gives an overview of the formation, the properties and the electrochemical applications of ordered mesoporous silica-based materials in electrocatalysis, electrosorption, matrix immobilization, construction of systems for controlled release of active compounds, sensors, biosensors and immunosensors. We also present a comprehensive overview of current developments and key issues in the determination of some biological molecules with particular emphasis on the evaluation of models.

Synthesis and Characterization of the Hybrid Clay-Based Material Montmorillonite-Melanoidin: A Potential Soil Model

2010

The study of the interactions among metals, minerals, and humic substances is essential in understanding the migration of inorganic pollutants in the geosphere. A considerable amount of organic matter in the environment is associated with clay minerals. To understand the role of organic matter in the environment and its association with clay minerals, a hybrid clay-based material (HCM), montmorillonite (STx-1)-melanoidin, was prepared from L-tyrosine and L-glutamic acid by the Maillard reaction. The HCM was characterized by elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM), and thermal analysis. The presence…

Cooperative formation of inorganic-organic interfaces in the synthesis of silicate mesostructures.

1993

A model is presented to explain the formation and morphologies of surfactant-silicate mesostructures. Three processes are identified: multidentate binding of silicate oligomers to the cationic surfactant, preferential silicate polymerization in the interface region, and charge density matching between the surfactant and the silicate. The model explains present experimental data, including the transformation between lamellar and hexagonal mesophases, and provides a guide for predicting conditions that favor the formation of lamellar, hexagonal, or cubic mesostructures. Model Q(230) proposed by Mariani and his co-workers satisfactorily fits the x-ray data collected on the cubic mesostructure …

Halloysite nanotubes as polyolefin fillers

2015

Large-area dielectric breakdown performance of polymer films

2015

In this study, large-area dielectric breakdown performances of various bi-axially oriented polypropylene (BOPP)-silica nanocomposite films are studied by utilizing the self-healing multi-breakdown method presented in the Part I of this publication. In particular, the effects of silica filler content, pre-mixing method, co-stabilizer content and film processing on the large-area breakdown performance are analyzed. Nanostructural and film cross-sectional analyses are correlated to the breakdown responses. The optimum silica filler content is found to reside at the low fill fraction level (~1 wt-%) and automatic pre-mixing of the raw materials and the optimization of the orientation temperatur…

Structure and Yielding of Colloidal Silica Gels Varying the Range of Interparticle Interactions.

2016

The relationship between interaction range, structure, fluid-gel transition, and viscoelastic properties of silica dispersions at intermediate volume fraction, Φv ≈ 0.1 and in alkaline conditions, pH = 9 was investigated. For this purpose, rheological, physicochemical, and structural (synchrotron-SAXS) analyses were combined. The range of interaction and the aggregation state of the dispersions were tuned by adding either divalent counterions (Ca(2+)) or polycounterions (PDDA). With increasing calcium chloride concentration, a progressive aggregation was observed which precludes a fluid-gel transition at above 75 mM of calcium chloride. In this case, the aggregation mechanism is driven by s…
