Orientation of charged clay nanotubes in evaporating droplet meniscus.

During drying, an aqueous suspension of strongly charged halloysite clay nanotubes concentrates at the edge of the droplet ("coffee-ring" effect) which provides alignment of the tubes along the liquid-substrate contact line. First, the surface charge of the nanotubes was enhanced by polyanion adsorption inside of the lumen to compensate for the internal positive charges. This increased the magnitude of the ξ-potential of the tubes from -36 to -81mV and stabilized the colloids. Then, colloidal halloysite was dropped onto the substrate, dried at 65°C and after a concentration of ~0.05mgmL-1 was reached, the alignment of nanotubes occurred starting from the droplet edges. …

Comparative cytotoxic study of silica materials functionalised with essential oil components in HepG2 cells

[EN] This work evaluated the cytotoxic effect of different EOCs-functionalised silica particle types. The in vitro toxicity of eugenol and vanillin-immobilised SAS, MCM-41 microparticles and MCM-41 nanoparticles was evaluated on HepG2 cells, and compared to free EOCs and pristine materials. The results revealed that free essential oil components and bare silica had a mild cytotoxic effect on HepG2 cells. However, the comparative study showed that free eugenol and vanillin had a milder cytotoxic effect than the equivalent concentrations of immobilised components on the different silica particles, while differences in cell viability between the bare and functionalised particles relied on the …

Sponges (phylum Porifera) represent the oldest metazoans. Their characteristic metazoan adhesion molecules and transcription factors enable them to establish a complex "Bauplan" ; three major differentiated cell types (epithelial cells, skeletal cells/sclerocytes, and contractile cells) can be distinguished. Histochemical and electron microscopic analysis of spiculogenesis in the demosponge Suberites domuncula.

The skeleton of demosponges is built of spicules consisting of biosilica. Using the primmorph system from Suberites domuncula, we demonstrate that silicatein, the biosilica-synthesizing enzyme, and silicase, the catabolic enzyme, are colocalized at the surface of growing spicules as well as in the axial filament located in the axial canal. It is assumed that these two enzymes are responsible for the deposition of biosilica. In search of additional potential structural molecules that might guide the mineralization process during spiculogenesis to species-specific spicules, electron microscopic studies with antibodies against galectin and silicatein were performed. Cryopreservation of Italian cultivars of hazelnut

The present study was performed to optimise the cryopreservation protocol in Italian cultivars of Corylus avellana L. Lateral buds excised from in vitro grown plantlets of ‘Tonda Gentile Romana’ (TGR) and ‘Montebello’ (MB) were cryopreserved by the encapsulation-dehydration technique. The effect of dehydration of beads with sucrose (0.5, 0.75 or 1 M) for 1 or 3 days, of desiccation with silica gel for 6 or 8 h and of application of two cytokinins (N6-benzyladenine or meta-Topolin) in the regrowth phase was evaluated. Hydration dependent dynamics in sol-gel encapsulated myoglobin.

In this work we study the effect of hydration on the dynamics of a protein in confined geometry, i.e. encapsulated in a porous silica matrix. Using elastic neutron scattering we investigate the temperature dependence of the mean square displacements of non-exchangeable hydrogen atoms of sol-gel encapsulated met-myoglobin. The study is extended to samples at 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 g water/g protein fractions and comparison is made with met-myoglobin powders at the same average hydration and with a dry powder sample. Investigation on the ganaration process of HO2• radicals by γ-ray irradiation in O2-loaded fumed silica

Abstract We report an experimental investigation on the effects of γ-ray irradiation in three types of fumed silica previously loaded with O 2 molecules. Our data indicate that the main effect of irradiation in these systems is to generate a very large concentration of HO 2 interstitial radicals (about 10 18  molecules/cm 3 ). Furthermore, the number of generated HO 2 was found to be larger in the samples with higher O 2 contents before irradiation. This correlation suggests that HO 2 radicals are induced by reaction of interstitial O 2 molecules with radiolytic H atoms, as previously suggested for O 2 -loaded bulk amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO 2 or silica) samples.
