Cytotoxicity of glass ionomer cements containing silver nanoparticles
2015
Background: Some studies have investigated the possibility of incorporating silver nanoparticles (NAg) into dental materials to improve their antibacterial properties. However, the potential toxic effect of this material on pulp cells should be investigated in order to avoid additional damage to the pulp tissue. This study evaluated the cytotoxicity of conventional and resin-modified glass ionomer cements (GIC) with and without addition of NAg. Material and Methods: NAg were added to the materials at two different concentrations by weight: 0.1% and 0.2%. Specimens with standardized dimensions were prepared, immersed in 400 μL of culture medium and incubated at 37°C and 5% CO2 for 48 h to pr…
CYTOTOXIC EFFECTS OF SILVER NANOPARTICLES (AgNPs) BIOSYNTHESIZED FROM KLEBSIELLA OXYTOCA DSM29614 AGAINST BREAST CANCER CELLS
2015
Klebsiella oxytoca DSM 29614 (KO) is a strain that produces, under anaerobic conditions, bacterial exopolysaccharides (EPSs), made of four rhamnose (Rha), two glucuronic acids (GlcA) and one galactose (Gal) bound by α and β glycosidic bonds1,2, showing metal-binding properties3. In particular, KO in the presence of AgNO3 is able to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) incorporated within the EPS (AgNPs-EPS). The AgNPs-EPS, may contain Ag+1 when KO growing in the presence of oxygen and Ag° under anaerobic conditions, giving a different biological activity4. In the present study were evaluated the cytotoxic effects of AgNPs-EPS, produced under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, on breast ca…
Infinite coordination polymer networks metallogelation of aminopyridine conjugates and in situ silver nanoparticle formation
2018
Herein we report silver(i) directed infinite coordination polymer network (ICPN) induced self-assembly of low molecular weight organic ligands leading to metallogelation. Structurally simple ligands are derived from 3-aminopyridine and 4-aminopyridine conjugates which are composed of either pyridine or 2,2'-bipyridine cores. The cation specific gelation was found to be independent of the counter anion, leading to highly entangled fibrillar networks facilitating the immobilization of solvent molecules. Rheological studies revealed that the elastic storage modulus (G') of a given gelator molecule is counter anion dependent. The metallogels derived from ligands containing a bipyridine core dis…
Evaluation of silver-infused polylactide films for inactivation of Salmonella and feline calicivirus in vitro and on fresh-cut vegetables
2012
There is a growing trend to develop packaging materials with an active role in guarantying that the quality and safety characteristics of packaged products will remain or improve from preparation throughout shelf-life. In the present study, 0.001-1.0 wt.% silver ions were satisfactorily incorporated into polylactide (PLA) films by a solvent casting technique. Silver migration from the films was measured by voltamperometry and then correlated with its antimicrobial efficacy against Salmonella enterica and feline calicivirus (FCV), a human norovirus surrogate, by using the Japanese industrial standard (JIS Z 2801). The PLA-silver films showed strong antibacterial and antiviral activity in vit…
This paper documents the fortuitous discovery of a silver fraction, possi…
Electrophoretic analysis of heterogeneous lipopolysaccharides from various strains of Vibrio vulnificus biotypes 1 and 2 by silver staining and immun…
1992
Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of 11 strains of Vibrio vulnificus biotypes 1 and 2, isolated from an eel farm, and of 10 reference strains, were examined by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis coupled with silver staining and immunoblotting. LPS samples were obtained from whole-cell lysates, outer membrane fragments, and extracellular products. By silver staining, only a diffuse band of low-molecular weight could be visualized in all cases except for a biotype 1 strain isolated from water. However, immunoblotting with antisera obtained against strains of biotypes 1 and 2 from eels allowed visualization of multiple O-polysaccharide chains. All biotype 2 strains, independently of their origins,…
Galvanic deposition of Chitosan-AgNPs as antibacterial coating
Thanks to mechanical properties similar human bones, metallic materials represent the best choice for fabrication of orthopedic implants. Although metals could be widely used in the field of biomedical implants, corrosion phenomena could occur, causing metal ions releasing around periprosthetic tissues leading, in the worst cases, to the development of infections. In these cases, patients need prolonged antibiotic therapies that may cause bacterial resistance. Preventing bacterial colonization of biomedical surfaces is the key to limiting the spread of infections. Antibacterial coatings have become a very active field of research, strongly stimulated by the increasing urgency of identifying…
Le emissioni monetali della Fenicia prima di Alessandro - I
1997
The study illustrates the origin of money in Phoenicia, starting from the Bronze Age exchange tradition based on silver by weight and linked to the top-down structure of the Syro-Palestinian societies, up to the appearance of money, whose circulation and forms of hoarding are examined
Gli Angeli della Chiesa di Santa Caterina D’Alessandria di Palermo
2020
A study on eighteenth-century angels decorated in silver foil on the high altar of St. Catherine of Alexandria´s church in Palermo.
The unprecedented silver Crucifix from the Palermo private collection is being studied. The presence of the FL.IV punch leads to ascribe the artifact, made in 1695, to Filippo Juvarra, inserting it among his youthful works in silver.
