The southernmost beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests of Europe (Mount Etna, Italy): ecology, structural stand-type diversity and management implications
2013
The southernmost European beech forests are located in the upper forest vegetation belt on Mount Etna volcano. Their standstructural patterns were analysed to assess the effects of the site-ecological factors and previous management practices on the forest structure. Five main structural-silvicultural types were identified among the main beech forest types: coppice, highmountain coppice (HMCo), high forest, coppice in conversion to high-forest and non-formal stand. A detailed standstructural analysis was carried out through measured dendrometric parameters and derived structural characters linked to both the horizontal and the vertical profiles. Plant regeneration processes were also assess…
Estimating the difference between brightness and surface temperatures for a vegetal canopy
1995
Abstract The difference between the surface temperature T S and the brightness temperature T b , which can be measured with a thermal infrared radiometer, has been calculated for different surface emissivity values and different atmospheric conditions. These calculations show that T s − T b is often significant even for high surface emissivities and that the spectral band in which the measurements are performed is a key factor in the interpretation of T s − T b . In particular, it is not a simple matter to use the characterisation of the whole spectrum atmospheric radiation to derive T s from T b when the measurements are performed in the 8–14 μm atmospheric window.

Qualité et performance de plants de Douglas soumis à différentes contraintes hydriques
1999
An experiment was carried out on 12 Douglas fir seedlings lots that were 3 years old and had all originated from the same seed lot. Treatments consisted in combining stock type with three different height to diameter ratios, storage duration and method (long at 2°C or short in various conditions), and protection from desiccation (by bagging or not). Seedling lots were assessed at planting by root electrolyte leakage (REL), root moisture content (RMC) and predawn shoot water potential (Ywp). They were planted simultaneously in well-watered or water-stressed conditions. Performance level was based on survival and height growth at the end of the growing season. Slender seedlings not bagged had…

Enhancing Resilience of Boreal Forests Through Management Under Global Change: a Review
2022
Abstract Purpose of Review Boreal forests provide a wide range of ecosystem services that are important to society. The boreal biome is experiencing the highest rates of warming on the planet and increasing demand for forest products. Here, we review how changes in climate and its associated extreme events (e.g., windstorms) are putting at risk the capacity of these forests to continue providing ecosystem services. We further analyze the role of forest management to increase forest resilience to the combined effects of climate change and extreme events. Recent Findings Enhancing forest resilience recently gained a lot of interest from theoretical perspective. Yet, it remains unclear how to …
Tree invasions in Italian forests
2022
Many forest tree species have been moved outside their native range to provide goods and services elsewhere, but some of them have become invasive, causing negative impacts on biodiversity and human activities. The assessment and knowledge on the degree and scale to which forest ecosystems are invaded by non-native trees is of paramount importance for tailored policies and strategies aiming at forest conservation. By analyzing main databases and literature and applying a four-level scale of invasion (not currently invaded and with low invasibility; potentially invasible; moderately invaded; massively invaded), we assessed the current and potential occurrence of twenty-five invasive non-nati…
