While the mainstream of modern moral philosophy has always assumed that the characteristic situation in moral judg…
Peptide classification using optimal and information theoretic syntactic modeling
2010
Accepted version of an article published in the journal: Pattern Recognition. Published version available on Sciverse: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.patcog.2010.05.022 We consider the problem of classifying peptides using the information residing in their syntactic representations. This problem, which has been studied for more than a decade, has typically been investigated using distance-based metrics that involve the edit operations required in the peptide comparisons. In this paper, we shall demonstrate that the Optimal and Information Theoretic (OIT) model of Oommen and Kashyap [22] applicable for syntactic pattern recognition can be used to tackle peptide classification problem. We advoca…
Distance measures for biological sequences: Some recent approaches
2008
AbstractSequence comparison has become a very essential tool in modern molecular biology. In fact, in biomolecular sequences high similarity usually implies significant functional or structural similarity. Traditional approaches use techniques that are based on sequence alignment able to measure character level differences. However, the recent developments of whole genome sequencing technology give rise to need of similarity measures able to capture the rearrangements involving large segments contained in the sequences. This paper is devoted to illustrate different methods recently introduced for the alignment-free comparison of biological sequences. Goal of the paper is both to highlight t…
Movement patterns of Tenebrio beetles demonstrate empirically that correlated-random-walks have similitude with a Lévy walk.
2013
AbstractCorrelated random walks are the dominant conceptual framework for modelling and interpreting organism movement patterns. Recent years have witnessed a stream of high profile publications reporting that many organisms perform Lévy walks; movement patterns that seemingly stand apart from the correlated random walk paradigm because they are discrete and scale-free rather than continuous and scale-finite. Our new study of the movement patterns of Tenebriomolitor beetles in unchanging, featureless arenas provides the first empirical support for a remarkable and deep theoretical synthesis that unites correlated random walks and Lévy walks. It demonstrates that the two models are complemen…
Combining similarity measures in content-based image retrieval
2008
The purpose of content based image retrieval (CBIR) systems is to allow users to retrieve pictures from large image repositories. In a CBIR system, an image is usually represented as a set of low level descriptors from which a series of underlying similarity or distance functions are used to conveniently drive the different types of queries. Recent work deals with combination of distances or scores from different and usually independent representations in an attempt to induce high level semantics from the low level descriptors of the images. Choosing the best method to combine these results requires a careful analysis and, in most cases, the use of ad-hoc strategies. Combination based on or…
Evolution of nurses' social representation of hospital hygiene: From training to practice
2011
Nurses' social representations of hospital hygiene were analyzed. A cross-sectional method was used to compare and analyze the social representations of the concept domain of "hospital hygiene" across three independent groups of participants (N=744). The groups included: (a) professional nurses (N=114); (b) student nurses (N=315); and (c) psychology students (N=315). Comparisons were drawn: (a) between professionals and students; and (b) between student nurse cohorts at three different levels (years) of training. The results show an ongoing evolution of the social representations of hospital hygiene during training and in the course of professional practice. The representation of hospital h…
