Status of Nordic research on simulation-based learning in healthcare: an integrative review
2018
This article is distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Background. Based on common geography, sociopolitics, epidemiology, and healthcare services, the Nordic countries could benefit from increased collaboration and uniformity in the development of simulation-based learning (SBL). To date, only a limited overview exists on the Nordic research literature on SBL and its progress in healthcare education. Therefore, the aim of this study is to fill that gap and suggest directions for future research. Methods. An integrative review design was used. A search was conducted for relevant research published during the period spanning from 1966 to Ju…
METHODOLOGY DEVELOPMENT IN ADULT LEARNING RESEARCH. COMBINING PHYSIOLOGICAL REACTIONS AND LEARNING EXPERIENCES IN SIMULATION-BASED LEARNING ENVIRONME…
2020
We aim to clarify whether physiological measurement technologies can be used in combination with traditional educational research methods to investigate learning experience. We developed an interdisciplinary research design for multilevel investigation of adult learning experience. We collected data in aviation simulations and forestry simulations, to show both similarities and differences between different learning situations. Both settings utilize high quality virtual simulations allowing learning to occur in near authentic situations. The learning situations were structured pedagogically in a similar way. They involve learner-instructor interaction in a one-on-one setting and follow a tr…
Organizing for collaboration in simulation-based environments : an affordance perspective
2023
Extant research has identified the significance of technological affordances in computer-supported learning environments. However, until recently, there is scarcely empirical research on affordances for organizing collaboration in these learning environments. To address this gap, this study empirically examines affordances for organizing collaboration in a simulation-based learning environment. We focus, in particular on understanding how the organizing affordances of the learning environment are perceived and employed by the learners during a simulation-based learning task. The study was executed among 177 undergraduate higher education (HE) business students from 10 universities in Belgiu…
Cyber security exercise : Literature review to pedagogical methodology
2019
This paper is a literature review, where we try to find out pedagogical principles has used in different virtual or simulated industry learning environments. The purpose is to use these findings to create in the future a new model for teaching in cyber security exercises. Cyber security exercises are the major service at JYVSECTEC - Jyväskylä Security Technology, cyber security research, training and development center in Finland [1]. JYVSECTEC Cyber security exercises are executed in real life simulation environment, RGCE (Realistic Global Cyber Environment) [1]. It provides the same functionality as the real Internet, but it is isolated from the real Internet and fully controlled by JYVSE…
Monimenetelmällistä lentosimulaatiotutkimusta : neurofysiologiaa ja oppimiskokemuksia
2023
Vuonna 2019 aloitettiin KoKemus-hanke – Koulutuspalveluiden ekosysteemin kehittäminen fysiologisen mittaustiedon ja älykkäiden järjestelmien avulla – jossa Ilmasotakoulu oli yksi pääyhteistyökumppani. Tavoitteena oli linkittää eri simulaatio-oppimisen toimijoita erityisesti Keski-Suomessa, ja hanketta rahoitti Keski-Suomen maakuntaliitto. nonPeerReviewed
Distance Learning with Hands-on Exercises : Physical Device vs. Simulator
2022
This Research to Practice Full Paper presents a comparison between a physical device and a simulator in a distance learning context. Programming embedded devices is very commonly taught using embedded hardware. One of the most used solutions is the Arduino microcontroller platform, which allows small embedded applications to be built and commanded in a programming language. However, there are some challenges in using physical devices for educational purposes. These challenges are particularly acute in distance learning or when the course needs to be scalable to a varying number of students. To address these challenges, we explored the potential of a simulator as a replacement for a physical…
