We analyze a class o f state space identification algorithms for time series, based on canonical correlation analysis in the ligth of recent results on stochastic systems theory calle d « subspace methods » .These can be describe as covariance estimation followed b y stochastic realization .The methods offer the major advantage o f converting the nonlinear parameter estimation phase in traditional V A R M A models identification in to the solution o f Riccati equation but introduce at the same time some no n trivial mathematical problem s related to positivity. The states o f the forward -backward innovations representation have an interpretation : Instrumental Variables estimators .

On the computational aspects of a symmetric multidomain BEM for elastoplastic analysis

The symmetric boundary element method (SBEM) is applied to the elasto-plastic analysis of bodies subdivided into substructures. This methodology is based on the use of: a multidomain SBEMapproach, for the evaluation of the elastic predictor; a return mapping algorithm based on the extremal paths theory, for the evaluation of inelastic quantities characterizing the plastic behaviour of each substructure; and a transformation of the domain inelastic integrals of each substructure into corresponding boundary integrals. Up-wind difference approximation and singularity formation for a slow erosion model

We consider a model for a granular flow in the slow erosion limit introduced in [31]. We propose an up-wind numerical scheme for this problem and show that the approximate solutions generated by the scheme converge to the unique entropy solution. Numerical examples are also presented showing the reliability of the scheme. We study also the finite time singularity formation for the model with the singularity tracking method, and we characterize the singularities as shocks in the solution.

Deduktiivinen ja induktiivinen lähestymistapa ovat jo pitkään kilpailleet keskenään asemastaan kielen opetuksessa. Useista tutkimuksista huolimatta kummankaan lähestymistavan paremmuutta ei ole pystytty osoittamaan. Deduktiivinen lähestymistapa seuraa perinteisempiä opetusmetodeja, joissa säännöt ja esimerkit annetaan ensin, ja tämän jälkeen oppilaat soveltavat oppimaansa useissa tehtävissä. Induktiivinen lähestymistapa puolestaan lähestyy opetettavaa asiaa päinvastaiselta kannalta, jossa oppilaat itse päättelevät säännöt useista esimerkeistä.
