Hiukkasmaisten hiilipäästöjen vaikutus ilmastoon
2016
Ilmakehän hiukkasmainen hiili on aerosolimuodossa esiintyvää hiiltä, joka on vapautunut ilmaan epätäydellisistä palamisprosesseista. Hiukkasmaisia hiiliyhdisteitä emittoituu erilaisista päästölähteistä, joista globaalisti tarkasteltuna suurin osa on ihmisperäisiä. Tarkastelemme miten alkuainemuotoisen mustan hiilen hiukkasemissiot absorboivat lämpösäteilyä maapallolla ja millainen vaikutus niillä on ilmastoon ja säteilytasapainoon. Suoran lämpöabsorption lisäksi mustan hiilen laskeuma tummentaa lumi- ja jääpeitteitä, mikä vähentää epäsuorasti albedon muutoksen kautta takaisin avaruuteen heijastuvan säteilyn määrää. Hiukkasen absorption ja sironnan voimakkuudet vaihtelevat partikkelin muodos…
Neutral-current supernova neutrino-nucleus scattering off 127I and 133Cs
2022
A large number of the presently running neutrino and dark-matter experiments use thallium-doped cesium-iodide CsI[Tl] crystals, sodium-doped cesium-iodide CsI[Na] crystals, or thallium-doped sodium-iodide NaI[Tl] crystals. In the present paper we calculate elastic and inelastic cross sections for neutral-current supernova-neutrino scattering off 127I and 133Cs, relevant for experiments using CsI[Tl], CsI[Na], or NaI[Tl] crystals. We study also the cross sections folded with two-parameter Fermi-Dirac distributions of the supernova-neutrino spectrum. The adopted nuclear-theory framework is the microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model, able to operate in large single-particle valence bases and u…
Instrumentation for time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis
2016
Time-of-flight elastic recoil detection is an ion beam based method to analyze the elemental composition of thin film samples at different depths. In order to improve the mass resolution and to enable kinematic correction a position sensitive gas ionization chamber energy detector was constructed. This detector along with pre-existing timing detectors were connected to a modern fully digitizing data acquisition setup. This thesis describes the design of these instruments, including all aspects from the mechanical design of the gas ionization detector to the algorithm and software development of the digitizing acquisition setup. The performance of the system has been studied with measurements …

Electromagnetic wave propagation in non-homogeneous waveguides
2015
We investigate an electromagnetic waveguide, having several cylindrical ends. The waveguide is assumed to be empty and to have a perfectly conductive boundary. We study the electromagnetic field, excited in the waveguide in the presence of charges and currents. The field can be described as a solution of the stationary Maxwell system with conductive boundary conditions and “intrinsic” radiation conditions at infinity. We prove the problem to be well-posed. Electromagnetic waves propagation in the waveguide can be described by means of a scattering matrix. We introduce such a matrix for all values of the spectral parameter k in the waveguide continuous spectrum and study its properties. Moreove…
Robustness of radiation beam profile measurements
2023
In this master’s thesis, profile measurements of PTW Semiflex 3D and PTW Semiflex ionisation chambers in addition to IBA MatriXX matrix detector were compared to each other using different measurement set-ups. The ionisation chamber measure- ments were done in a water phantom in horizontal and vertical orientations. Using two different set-ups in the horizontal orientation. The first horizontal set-up used the current clinical quality assurance program in Tampere University Hospital with the wire of the chamber lying deep in the water phantom. The second horizontal measurements were done with more of the wire in the radiation field by having the wire closer to the surface of the water. Meas…
Diffractive Processes at Next-to-Leading Order in the Dipole Picture
2023
Diffraktiiviset prosessit ovat korkean energian rajalla sensitiivisiä kohdehiukkasen gluonijakaumalle, mistä johtuen niiden avulla voidaan tutkia kohdetta kvanttiväridynamiikan epälineaarisessa alueessa. Näiden epälineaaristen ilmiöiden odotetaan johtavan gluonisaturaatioon, jota voidaan kuvata luontevasti värilasikondensaatiksi kutsutun efektiivisen kenttäteorian avulla. Vaikka saatavilla olevassa kokeellisessa datassa onkin vahvoja viitteitä gluonisaturaatiosta, yksiselitteistä merkkiä saturaatiosta ei ole havaittu. Tämän vuoksi on tärkeää parantaa saturaatiolle sensitiivisten prosessien teoreettista ymmärrystä, jotta pystytään löytämään selkeitä eroja kvanttiväridynamiikan lineaarisen ja…

Spatial localization of hotspots in Fano-resonant plasmonic oligomers for surface-enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering
2020
AbstractRealization of Fano resonance in plasmonic oligomers is often exploited to design efficient plasmonic substrates for surface-enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering. Disk-type Fano-resonant plasmonic oligomers are widely used to enhance the Raman signal of the probe material. Generally, hot spots are generated in those oligomers at different spatial locations at different wavelengths and only a few spatially overlapping hot spots at multiple wavelengths can be achieved with oblique incidence of excitation light. In this work, we proposed hexagonal gold nanoparticle based Fano-resonant plasmonic oligomers that can yield higher number of spatially overlapped hot spots compared …
Theoretical study of supernova neutrino and antineutrino scattering off the stable cadmium and lead isotopes
2017
In this thesis work, an extensive study of neutrino- and antineutrino-nucleus interactions is performed. The work is focused on supernova-neutrino scattering off the stable cadmium and lead isotopes. The studied nuclei are of interest for the investigations of neutrino-properties and for neutrino-detection experiments. The adopted nuclear-structure models are based on the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) and the microscopic quasiparticle- phonon model (MQPM) and the cross-sections calculations are based on the Donnelly-Walecka formalism. The computed cross sections are folded with a two-parameter Fermi-Dirac distribution to obtain realistic estimates of the nuclear responses …
