Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes from Pantelleria Mediterranean maquis litter. Third contribution
2010
In the third contribution to the study of Pantelleria meditteranean maquis litter, thirteen species of Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes are found and described. Three of them are proposed as new species: Anungitea pseudoramosa, A. sibaensis and Subulispora insularis.
FIRST MOLECULAR DATA ON DELASTRIA ROSEA, FISCHERULA MACROSPORA AND HYDNOCYSTIS PILIGERA
2011
Several samples of Delastria rosea, Fischerula macrospora and Hydnocystis piligera from the Mediterranean basin are studied, and the first molecular data of these species are reported. A colour plate showing the external morphology of their ascomata is also included.
The Mineral Contents of Some Boletaceae Species from Sicily (Southern Italy)
2014
Abstract Data on the accumulation of metals in wild edible and inedible macrofungi of the Boletaceae family are discussed here and compared with data reported in literature from northern Italy and other European countries, as well as from China, Brazil, and Africa. The results show a significant difference in the values detected in Sicilian fungi compared to those reported in the literature.
First record of Phlebia margaritae (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) in Italy
2017
A new record of Phlebia margaritae, a very rare corticoid fungus, is reported for the first time in Italy. Macro- and micro-morphological descriptions, supported by molecular analysis, are also provided and new information on the geographic distribution of this species has now been increased
Evidences of adaptive traits to rocky substrates undermine paradigm of habitat preference of the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica
2015
AbstractPosidonia oceanica meadows are acknowledged as one of the most valuable ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea. P. oceanica has been historically described as a species typically growing on mobile substrates whose development requires precursor communities. Here we document for the first time the extensive presence of sticky hairs covering P. oceanica seedling roots. Adhesive root hairs allow the seedlings to firmly anchor to rocky substrates with anchorage strength values up to 5.23 N, regardless of the presence of algal cover and to colonise bare rock without the need for precursor assemblages to facilitate settlement. Adhesive root hairs are a morphological trait common on plants li…
Phytochemical Profile and Antioxidant Activity of the Aerial Part Extracts from Matthiola incana subsp. rupestris and subsp. pulchella (Brassicaceae)…
2021
As part of a project aimed at investigating the Matthiola taxa endemic to Sicily (Italy), this study focused on Matthiola incana, an edible species used in the traditional medicine of various countries. Herein, the characterization of phenolic and volatile compounds, the antioxidant capacity in vitro (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil (DPPH), reducing power and Fe2+ chelating activity assays) and the toxicity test (Artemia salina lethality bioassay) of the hydroalcoholic extracts from the aerial parts of M. incana subsp. rupestris from Mt. Pellegrino (Palermo) and Mt. Erice (Trapani), and of M. incana subsp. pulchella are reported. The results are compared with those previously shown for M. inc…
Capparis kebarensis, a new species of Capparaceae from Papua Barat, Indonesia
2012
The new species Capparis kebarensis Fici (Capparaceae) is here described and illustrated. Its affinities are discussed.
Plant morphology: outdated or advanced discipline in modern plant sciences?
2018
Despite an increasing societal awareness and sensitivity about biological diversity and nature conservation as pivotal matters for human survival and well-being, plant systematics has gone through a steady decline in interest, and researches on these topics are often neglected. This particularly applies to plant morphology in its broad sense (i.e. including anatomy, histology, micro-morphology), which has increasingly become marginalized and considered less important than other scientific methods in plant biology. Notwithstanding, even in the current times of genomics (plus other “omics” topics) and functional ecology, when trait-based approaches are essential for studying and understanding…
I pleuroti delle ombrellifere in Sicilia
2012
Up-to-date distribution, ecology and cultivation of Pleurotus eryngii (DC.) Quél. var. thapsiae Venturella, Zervakis & Saitta in Sicily
2012
Venturella et al. [1] described a new taxon named Pleurotus eryngii (DC.) Quél. var. thapsiae Venturella, Zervakis & Saitta (Madonie Mts) on Thapsia garganica L. and provided ecological data on the locus classicus. P. eryngii var. thapsiae was reported on pastures evolved, from 1000 to 1500 m a.s.l., on limestone and is characterized by a double period of fructification (autumn and spring). P. eryngii var. thapsiae is a choice wild edible mushroom belonging to a special group of Pleurotus species which appear in nature in close association with Apiaceae plants. As part of the project's census of fungi in Sicily two new localities of growth were localized in the Natural Reserves of Capo Gall…
