alpha 2-Adrenoceptors are possibly involved in the regulation of the hydroelectrolytic flux across the digestive mucosa. As no data are available concerning the existence of these receptors in colon epithelial cells, we aimed to investigate the existence of alpha 2-adrenoceptors in this tissue using tritiated antagonists. World Health Organization and the United States Center for Disease Control have recently recommended the use of 0.8 FIO2 in all adult surgical patients undergoing general anaesthesia, to prevent surgical site infections. This recommendation has arisen several discussions: As a matter of fact, there are numerous studies with different results about the effect of FIO2 on surgical site infection. Moreover, the clinical effects of FIO2 are not limited to infection control. We asked some prominent authors about their comments regarding the recent recommendations.

Isolated TSH deficiency as a cause for congenital hypothyroidism is relatively uncommon. Even more rare is the identification of mutations in the TSHβ gene, only four of which have been identified. We here report a 4-month-old girl with isolated TSH deficiency born to consanguineous parents. Sequencing of the TSHβ-subunit gene revealed a homozygous G to A transition at position +5 of the donor splice site of intron 2. TSHβ gene transcript could not be obtained from fibroblasts or white blood cells by illegitimate amplification. The availability of tritium labeled cyproterone acetate (CPA) facilitated the systematic investigation of the binding characteristics of this compound for human uterine progesterone receptors (PgR). The binding parameters of 3H-CPA are compared to those of 3H-R5020 and 3H-progesterone. The rate constants of association (k1M-1sec-1) to PgR were 7.8 X 10(3) for 3H-R5020, 4.5 X 10(4) for 3H-progesterone and 4.0 X 10(4) for 3H-CPA. Cultural approach to the perception of risk: analysing concern about the siting of a high-level nuclear waste facility in Finland

A study of local residents' attitudes toward the siting of a high-level nuclear waste facility in Finland was undertaken in three municipalities (Eurajoki, Kuhmo and Aänekoski) that are being considered possible host communities for the facility. The results of the survey show that opposition to the facility is quite strong in two of the three municipalities, while in the third a polarization of opinions into two opposing camps is evident. The size, social structure and substance of the local opposition and support are analysed.
