Establishment and interspecific associations in two species of Ichthyocotylurus (Trematoda) parasites in perch (Perca fluviatilis)

2011

Background: Co-infections of multiple parasite species in hosts may lead to interspecific associations and subsequently shape the structure of a parasite community. However, few studies have focused on these associations in highly abundant parasite species or, in particular, investigated how the associations develop with time in hosts exposed to co-infecting parasite species for the first time. We investigated metacercarial establishment and interspecific associations in the trematodes Ichthyocotylurus variegatus and I. pileatus co-infecting three age cohorts of young perch (Perca fluviatilis). Results: We found that the timing of transmission of the two Ichthyocotylurus species was very si…

Physical-chemical properties and possible applications of clay minerals and humic acid composite materials

2019

Article Pollution caused by pharmaceuticals has become an increasingly serious issue, therefore innovative and cost – effective methods of pharmaceutical’s removal must be studied. Clay – humic acid composite materials can be considered as prospective and low cost sorbents for contaminants. The aim of this study is to develop clay mineral and humic acid composite materials and to characterise their possible applications. For this research, three types of clay minerals (montmorillonite, kaolinite and bentonite) were modified with three types of humic substances: technical humic acid from lignite, humic substances extracted from raised bog peat and technical K humate from lignite. The sorptio…

The role of maternal effects in host-parasite interactions: examination of the development of the immune defense in a colonial seabird, the black-leg…

2004

One of the main aims of evolutionary biology is to understand the mechanisms responsible for the phenotypic variation on which natural selection can act. Maternal effects occur when a mother's phenotype or her environment influence her offspring's phenotype. Despite the importance of such effects for the ecology of host-parasite interactions, their role has been relatively neglected to date. In this thesis, we examined how mothers influence the immune defense of their young in an environment that varies in space and time. This work has primarily focused on a colonial seabird, the black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla). Using this model, we have first shown that specific maternal antibodi…

Host Developmental Stage Effects on Parasite Resistance and Tolerance.

2022

Hosts can defend themselves against parasites either by preventing or limiting infections (resistance) or by limiting parasite-induced damage (tolerance). However, it remains underexplored how these defense types vary over host development with shifting patterns of resource allocation priorities. Here, we studied the role played by developmental stage in resistance and tolerance in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). This anadromous fish has distinct life stages related to living in freshwater and seawater. We experimentally exposed 1-year-old salmon, either at the freshwater stage or at the stage transitioning to the marine phase, to the trematode Diplostomum pseudospathaceum. Using 56 pedigree…

The technological evolution of the Castellón ceramic tile district: the contribution of the frit, glaze and colour industry

2008

[EN]: The industrial district of Castellón is characterized by a great dynamism based on technological innovation, both product and process, the origins of which are to be found on its providers, the machinery industry and the frit, glaze and colours industry. In this paper the current situation of the frit, glaze and colour industry is analyzed, accounting also for the situation of its main European competitor in Italy. The formation and development of the industry is also described in relation to the industrial district and the innovation system where it belongs, together with the R&D activity, the innovation activity, and the main technological milestones that have made it become the wor…

Asymmetric [N–I–N]+halonium complexes in solution?

2020

Assessment of the solution equilibria of [bis(pyridine)iodine(I)]+ complexes by ESI-MS and NMR reveals the preference of iodine(I) to form complexes with a more basic pyridine. Mixtures of symmetric [bis(pyridine)iodine(I)]+ complexes undergo statistical ligand exchange, with a predominant entropic driving force favoring asymmetric systems. The influence of ligand basicity, concentration, temperature, and ligand composition is evaluated. Our findings are expected to facilitate the investigations, and the supramolecular and synthetic applications of halonium ions’ halogen bonds. peerReviewed

Potent affinity material for tracing acetone and related analytes based on molecular recognition by halogen bonds.

2014

Affinity materials based on halogen bonds turned out to be a powerful tool for the molecular recognition of acetone or related carbonyl compounds in the presence of ubiquitous protic molecules. The superior selectivity and sensitivity were found by the gravimetric detection of volatile organic compounds by quartz crystal microbalances.

Structural Changes of Titanium Oxide Induced by Chromium Addition as Determined by an X-Ray Diffraction Study

1995

Abstract An X-ray diffraction study has been carried out on a series of polycrystalline TiO 2 (anatase) catalysts containing Cr(III) at different atomic concentrations (0.2-5.0 at. %), prepared by a co-precipitation method. Analysis of the variation of the unit cell parameters of chromium-doped anatase with respect to pure anatase has allowed us to estimate the solubility limit for the system at around 1.4 at. %. There is no evidence for the existence of a separate crystalline chromium oxide phase. Temperature effects on the cell parameter and on the anatase-rutile transformation rate were also analyzed. An increase in temperature produced release of the chromium from the solid solution. At…

Multi-channel receptors based on thiopyrylium functionalised with macrocyclic receptors for the recognition of transition metal cations and anions.

2010

We report herein the synthesis and characterization of a family of ligands containing different cation binding sites covalently connected to a thiopyrylium signalling reporter. The receptors L1–L6 are able to signal the presence of certain metal cations via three different channels; i.e. electrochemically, fluorogenically and chromogenically. An acetonitrile solution of L1–L6 shows a bright blue colour due to a charge-transfer band in the 575–585 nm region. The colour variation in acetonitrile of L1–L6 in the presence of the metal cations Ag+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ has been studied. A selective hypsochromic shift of the blue band was found for the systems L4-Pb2+ and L…
