A Simple Complex on the Verge of Breakdown: Isolation of the Elusive Cyanoformate Ion

2014

Cyanide Hitches a Ride Cyanide is a by-product of the biosynthesis of ethylene in plants and it has been somewhat puzzling how the ion is safely removed before it can shut down enzymatic pathways by coordination to catalytic iron centers. A proposed mechanism has implicated the cyanoformate ion—essentially, a weak adduct of cyanide and carbon dioxide—as the initial product, although its lifetime was uncertain. Murphy et al. (p. 75 ; see the Perspective by Alabugin and Mohamed ) crystallized this previously elusive adduct and found that its solution-phase stability varies inversely with the dielectric properties of the medium. The results bolster a picture in which the adduct shuttles the cy…

Student engagement in Finnish lower secondary school

2016

This thesis examined the engagement of students at lower secondary schools in Finland. Two independent cross-sectional data sets collected in 2010 (N = 821) and 2013 (N = 2485) were analyzed using both variable-centered and personcentered methods. The thesis analyzed the associations between teacher– student relationships, family support for students’ learning, peer support at school, control and relevance of school work, students’ future aspirations and goals, school burnout, behavior at school, and truancy from school. The results offered three main findings. First, the structure of Finnish lower secondary school students’ affective and cognitive engagement, as assessed using the Finnish …

Miten organisaatiokulttuurin eettisyys on yhteydessä koulupsykologien organisaatioon sitoutumiseen ja työpaikanvaihtoaikeisiin?

2015

Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin koulupsykologien organisaatiokulttuurin eettisyyden yhteyttä heidän organisaatioon sitoutumiseensa ja työpaikanvaihtoaikeisiinsa. Huhtikuussa 2014 toteutettuun kyselytutkimukseen osallistui 270 koulupsykologia. Regressio…

Emotional Agency at Work: The Development and Validation of a Measure

2022

Despite intensive research on agency in education and work environments, the topic remains underexplored through the lens of emotions. This study conducted the development and validation of a quantitative measure to explore emotional agency in working life. Empirical data (N = 240) were collected via a web-based survey within the professional domains of healthcare and real estate services. The participants’ age, educational level, and gender corresponded to the domain-specific and general employee distribution in Finland. The questionnaire items were based on a theoretical construct of emotional agency at work. Exploratory factor analysis indicated that emotional agency includes two dimensi…

Binding Properties and Stability of the Ras-Association Domain of Rap1-GTP Interacting Adapter Molecule (RIAM)

2012

The Rap1-GTP interacting adapter protein (RIAM) is an important protein in Rap1-mediated integrin activation. By binding to both Rap1 GTPase and talin, RIAM recruits talin to the cell membrane, thus facilitating talin-dependent integrin activation. In this article, we studied the role of the RIAM Ras-association (RA) and pleckstrin-homology (PH) domains in the interaction with Rap1. We found that the RA domain was sufficient for GTP-dependent interaction with Rap1B, and the addition of the PH domain did not change the binding affinity. We also detected GTP-independent interaction of Rap1B with the N-terminus of RIAM. In addition, we found that the PH domain stabilized the RA domain both in …

Employee commitment to energy management : a qualitative interview study about employee commitment to energy management in industrial companies and p…

2015

Energy management is increasingly important to organisations that consume significant amounts of energy mainly due to the needs to comply with changing legislation and for saving financial resources. Even though energy management has received academic attention, it has not been studied in the perspective of employee commitment. Employee commitment may create various benefits to an organisation and its employees. Hence, this study aims at creating a better understanding of why employees commit to energy management and how it may be enhanced. This qualitative study was conducted using theme interviews as a data collection method. 14 employees, working among energy management, in eleven organi…

Korkeakouluasteen avointen etäopintojaksojen suorittamisen eri vaiheiden riskitekijät

2022

Osana opetuksen tutkimuspohjaista kehittämistä pyrimme erityisesti tukemaan etäopintoihin sitoutumista, joka on yleisesti kontaktiopiskeluun sitoutumista heikompaa. Kehitystyön tueksi kartoitimme verkkokyselyllä sitoutumisen riskitekijöitä etäopintoja suorittavilla opiskelijoilla Jyväskylän yliopiston avoimessa yliopistossa. Keskityimme opintojakson suorittamisen ajalliseen ulottuvuuteen.

The “Architectures” of Successful Remote Collaborative Problem Solving : Exploring Commitment in Dyadic Interaction

2022

During successful collaborative problem solving (CPS), participants are expected not only to share and process information to solve the task, but also to show responsiveness and commitment to their partners. Accordingly, this exploratory study aims, via two contrasting cases, to acquire a preliminary understanding of how commitments and successful CPS come together in remote, dyadic interaction. To do so, the study relies on objective and subjective measures and combines group with individual levels of analysis on log files and cued interviews. The results revealed how commitments were interrelated with efficient coordination of interactions during CPS. Coordinated, well-communicated proble…

A Germanium Isocyanide Complex Featuring (n → π*) Back-Bonding and Its Conversion to a Hydride/Cyanide Product via C-H Bond Activation under Mild Con…

2012

Reaction of the diarylgermylene Ge(ArMe6)2 [ArMe6 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-(CH3)3)2] with tert-butyl isocyanide gave the Lewis adduct species (ArMe6)2GeCNBut, in which the isocyanide ligand displays a decreased C–N stretching frequency consistent with an n → π* back-bonding interaction. Density functional theory confirmed that the HOMO is a Ge–C bonding combination between the lone pair of electrons on the germanium atom and the C–N π* orbital of the isocyanide ligand. The complex undergoes facile C–H bond activation to produce a new diarylgermanium hydride/cyanide species and isobutene via heterolytic cleavage of the N–But bond. peerReviewed
