Traits and emotions
2000
This paper reviews literature on traits and emotions focusing on both structure and management, or 'having' and 'doing'. The cognitive perspective of this paper implies that traits and emotions are viewed as provisions to frame people and their behaviours in situations in meaningful ways. The focus on the structure of traits thus implies considering the now broadly acknowledged Big Five model as a dimensional framework by which traits of people can be meaningfully organized. A similar position is taken with respect to emotions, given the recurrent finding of a two-dimensional model of emotions with Positive Affect and Negative Affect (PA and NA). Maintaining relevant distinctions between tr…
Situational Perception in Mathematics (SPiM)—Results of a Cross-Country Study in Austria and Norway
2020
Situation-specific skills, as situational perception, are a central part of educators’ competence. This is especially true for kindergarten teachers (KTs) as most of their teaching is based on natural learning situations. The aim of this study is to contribute to the discussion on KTs’ situational perception by identifying aspects of early childhood education students’ situational perception in mathematics. Therefore, we conducted a qualitative study with N = 5 students from Austria and N = 5 students from Norway. Data was collected through a video-based questionnaire: The students watched seven video vignettes and wrote down their observations and reflections immediately upon watching. Dat…

Migration Experience of the Baltic Countries in the Context of Economic Crisis
2016
The Baltic countries, which experienced intensive outflow of labor during the first 5 years after joining the EU, also provide an interesting case for a study of the migration response to economic shocks. The behavior of Baltic migrants was different from that of their counterparts from other NMS. During the economic crisis of 2009–2010 and its aftermath, mobile citizens of other countries which joined EU in 2004 responded primarily to the worsening economic situation in old member state host countries: emigration slowed down, while return migration intensified.
Descentralización política y resultados económicos. Un análisis institucional del caso español
2009
Institutional individualism and institutional change: the search for a middle way mode of explanation
2001
After noting the lack of enthusiasm of several well-known scholars concerning the adoption of both methodological holism and methodological individualism in its several versions, this paper shows that institutional individualism is a different mode of explanation from both of these and also that it is not the same thing as the so-called Popperian programme of situational analysis. Institutional individualism is a mode of explanation that yields non-systemic and non-reductionist explanations at the same time as it allows for the incorporation into economic theories and models of the many formal and informal institutional aspects surrounding all human interactions, whether these interactions …
Natural versus manufactured capital: win–lose or win–win? A case study of the Finnish pulp and paper industry
2001
Abstract The effect of investments on environmental variables has been discussed through the win–win rhetoric, specifically in micro-level analysis. On the macro-level the win–win rhetoric has been replaced by the arguments for and against the substitutability of natural and manufactured capital. Here these two concepts belonging to different levels of analysis are linked by looking at the environmental and economic effects of chosen investment strategies in a traditionally capital-intensive industry over time. The paper shows that, rather than generalise the existence of win–win situations or the substitutability of capital, these positions are determined by purely situational factors. As …
