Situational Perception in Mathematics (SPiM)—Results of a Cross-Country Study in Austria and Norway

2020

Situation-specific skills, as situational perception, are a central part of educators’ competence. This is especially true for kindergarten teachers (KTs) as most of their teaching is based on natural learning situations. The aim of this study is to contribute to the discussion on KTs’ situational perception by identifying aspects of early childhood education students’ situational perception in mathematics. Therefore, we conducted a qualitative study with N = 5 students from Austria and N = 5 students from Norway. Data was collected through a video-based questionnaire: The students watched seven video vignettes and wrote down their observations and reflections immediately upon watching. Dat…

Natural versus manufactured capital: win–lose or win–win? A case study of the Finnish pulp and paper industry

2001

Abstract The effect of investments on environmental variables has been discussed through the win–win rhetoric, specifically in micro-level analysis. On the macro-level the win–win rhetoric has been replaced by the arguments for and against the substitutability of natural and manufactured capital. Here these two concepts belonging to different levels of analysis are linked by looking at the environmental and economic effects of chosen investment strategies in a traditionally capital-intensive industry over time. The paper shows that, rather than generalise the existence of win–win situations or the substitutability of capital, these positions are determined by purely situational factors. As …

Leadership styles and their specific correlation to gender - theoretical standpoint

2016

The purpose of the research is to review different leadership styles and get insight about specific female and male leadership style characteristics. In this context the development of conception of the changing role of females has been discussed and compared with the Western and Eastern European approach. Different leadership styles and their specific characteristics have been described, compared and evaluated in respect to gender roles. It was found out that female and male incline different leadership styles. Concentration of power and central decision-making which are seen as male leadership characteristics are effective during critical economic situations. Care, empathy and harmonic re…

Strategic cyber threat intelligence : Building the situational picture with emerging technologies

2020

In 2019, e-criminals adopted new tactics to demand enormous ransoms from large organizations by using ransomware, a phenomenon known as “big game hunting.” Big game hunting is an excellent example of a sophisticated and coordinated modern cyber-attack that has a significant impact on the target. Cyber threat intelligence (CTI) increases the possibilities to detect and prevent cyber-attacks and gives defenders more time to act. CTI is a combination of incident response and traditional intelligence. Intelligence modifies raw data into information for decision-making and action. CTI consists of strategic, operational, or tactical intelligence on cyber threats. Security event monitoring, event-…

THE METAMODEL: A STARTING POINT FOR DESIGN PROCESSES CONSTRUCTION

2010

The construction of ad-hoc design processes following the Situational Method Engineering (SME) paradigm is currently carried out by adopting a set of phases for which, until now, no well defined techniques and guidelines have been established. The consequence is that organizations are very dependent on method designers' skills. In this paper, we propose an approach based on SME for constructing customized agent oriented design processes. Our approach adopts the metamodel as the most important factor leading to the selection and assembly of method fragments and an algorithm for establishing the instantiation order of metamodel elements. The algorithm makes the proposed approach repeatable a…

The interaction between personal and situational factors in developing future engineers’ creativity

2017

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the interaction between the technological and the social field. Growth and development require a continuous source of ideas. Their manufacture is efficient only by stimulating the creativity development in the knowledge economy. This essential skill will lead to making smart products and technologies improvements. This will also be the result of the interactions between the new IT-cloud technologies and other various factors, such as: knowledge, skills, approaches, attention, motivation and intellectual property.

Using and Extending the SPEM Specifications to Represent Agent Oriented Methodologies

2009

Situational Method Engineering used for constructing ad-hoc agent oriented design processes is grounded on a well defined set of phases that are principally based on reuse of components coming from existing agent design processes; these components have to be stored in a repository. The identification and extraction of these components could take large advantages from the existence of a standardized representation of the design processes they come from. In this paper we illustrate our solution based on SPEM 2.0 specifications for modelling agent design processes and extending them when necessary to meet the specific needs we faced in our experiments.

Profiling Safety Behaviors: Exploration of the Sociocognitive Variables that Best Discriminate Between Different Behavioral Patterns

2012

This study combines contributions from both safety climate literature and prominent social influence theories. It was developed to identify the combination of sociocognitive variables that differentiate between different profiles of safety behaviors. This empirical approach has hardly been explored in the literature on behavioral aspects related to safety. The research setting for this study was a transportation company (N= 356). The results of discriminant analysis showed that different combinations of dispositional and situational influences may lead to diverse profiles of compliance and proactive safety behaviors. Perceived behavioral control was revealed to be the variable that best dif…
