Supplying small islands with solar, wind and sea wave. An economic approach to find the best energy share
2019
The progressive installation of power plants based on renewable energy sources is improving the sustainability of the energy sector. Despite the availability of commercial solutions, most of the small islands in the world are nowadays affected by a deep dependence on fossil fuels. In this context, the paper investigates the feasibility of an energy mix composed by solar, wind and sea wave, suggesting a sizing approach based on the minimization of the Levelized Cost of Electricity of the entire energy mix. As case study, the Aeolian Islands are presented.
EU Referenda in the Baltics: Understanding the Results at the Regional Level
2005
This paper analyses regional differences in EU referenda results in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. In each of the three countries, other things being equal, high income regions were significantly more pro-European than low-income ones, while regions with a high share of ethnic minorities were significantly more opposed to the enlargement than other regions. The ethnic effect was strongest in Latvia and weakest in Estonia. These findings clearly indicate necessity of stronger efforts both in integration of the Baltic societies and in the promotion of reliable EU information, especially in less developed regions. On the other hand, we confirm the findings from earlier referenda that support …
Modeling of female human body shapes for apparel design based on cross mean sets
2014
This paper is concerned with a method to build prototypes of human bodies that can be used for apparel design. One of the most important issues in the apparel development process is to define a sizing system to provide a good fitting for the majority of the population. Since anthropometric measures do not present the same linear growth with size in each dimension, it is very important to find a prototype that represents as accurately as possible each class in the sizing system. In this paper we propose a method based on the concept of random compact mean set to define prototypes in apparel design. From a cloud of 3D points obtained with a 3D scanner a solid that represents the human body is…
The Comparison of Software Reliability Assessment Models
2015
Abstract The reliability of the software represents one of the most important attributes of software quality, and the estimation of the reliability of the software is a problem hard to solve with accuracy. Nevertheless, in order to manage the quality of the software and of the standard practices in an organization, it is important to achieve an estimation of the reliability as accurate as possible. In the present work there are described the principles and techniques which underlie the estimation of the reliability of the software, starting from the definition of the concepts which express the attributes of software quality. It is taken into account the issue of the estimation of a software…
Siinä pitää kyllä olla vähä teflonii : tunnekokemuksia johtajana irtisanomistilanteessa
2017
The world of leadership has often been considered a callous world characterized at best only by masculine feelings, such as aggressiveness. In addition, leadership has traditionally been considered an influential skill of individuals. In this study, leadership was examined as a socially constructed phenomenon that develops as a result of interaction between leaders and their subordinates and that cannot be separated from the framework in which it takes place. The target phenomena in the present study were leaders’ emotional experiences related to those who were being dismissed. The main research task was to conduct an empirical study on leaders’ experiences as parties giving notices and ana…
Pokolenie a lingwistyka
2016
The fundamental transformations of contemporary world, which have encompassed also science and language reality, have posed a peculiar challenge to linguistics. A relevant linguistics-founded response ought to be an increased interest in all ways of language existence (concrete communication acts and their products in the form of texts, a system language, individual language awareness and collective language consciousness) as well as their interactions. Its effect should be, besides many new empirical concepts, a fuller synthesizing theory.
Error analysis and calibration for a novel pipe profiling tool
2020
Integrity of industrial pipework is ensured through routine inspection. Internal visual inspection tools are capable of characterising degradation in the form of corrosion, pitting, erosion and cracking. The accuracy of such inspection systems has a direct impact on decisions regarding the remaining lifetime of the asset. By minimising error margins, the asset may be operated with confidence for longer, with less uncertainty. This paper considers a probe system consisting of a laser profiler and camera that produces a textured 3D model of the internals of 2 – 6 inch pipework. The accuracy of the system is defined by the ability to extract laser projections from an image as it travels down t…
Fault-proneness of open source software: Exploring its relations to internal software quality and maintenance process
2013
The goal of this study is to explore how fault-proneness of open source software (OSS) could be explained in terms of internal quality attributes and maintenance process metrics. We reviewed earlier studies and performed a multiple case study of eight Java-based projects based on data available in the Source Forge repository. Overall, we studied 342 re- leases of those systems. As is usual, software quality was regarded as a set of internal and external quality attributes. A to- tal of 76 internal quality attributes were measured from the source code of the selected systems via the tool SoftCalc. Two external quality attributes contributing to fault-proneness were in turn obtained from the …
Vertical Software Industry Evolution: The Impact of Software Costs and Limited Customer Base
2013
ContextSoftware systems are commonly used in a variety of industries as a means of automating organizational business processes. Initially, such software is often developed in-house by the vertical organizations possibly with the support of professional IT service providers; however, in many cases, internally developed software is eventually replaced with the software products provided by independent software vendors. These vendors often use license fees to recover their software development investments, as well as to gain some margin. However, if the vendor's customer base for a specific type of software is limited, then either the license fees are too high and hence the customers may pref…
Problem Transformation Methods with Distance-Based Learning for Multi-Target Regression
2020
Multi-target regression is a special subset of supervised machine learning problems. Problem transformation methods are used in the field to improve the performance of basic methods. The purpose of this article is to test the use of recently popularized distance-based methods, the minimal learning machine (MLM) and the extreme minimal learning machine (EMLM), in problem transformation. The main advantage of the full data variants of these methods is the lack of any meta-parameter. The experimental results for the MLM and EMLM show promising potential, emphasizing the utility of the problem transformation especially with the EMLM. peerReviewed
