Blood fl ow restriction training (BFRT) has been shown to be an eff ective alternative technique to conventional resistance training to increase skeletal muscle hypertrophy and strength. Morphology of cardiac muscle in septic shock. Observations with a porcine septic shock model.

The morphology of cardiac muscle was investigated in a porcine model of septic shock, created by intermitted application of Escherichia coli-endotoxin. The earliest lesions, found after 18 h of septic shock, were endothelial cell swelling, marked leucostasis and slight ischaemic alterations of the muscle fibres. At the end point of the experiments, after 48 h, some fibrin thrombi were found associated with more pronounced ischaemic alterations of cardiac muscle cells and some necrotic fibres. After uneventful pregnancies, two newborn siblings, a girl and a boy – another sibling was stillborn – developed inspiratory stridor, hypertrophy of the right cardiac ventricle, reduction in spontaneous movements and mildly elevated creatine kinase. Muscle biopsies at ages of three months and seven weeks were performed and respectively, revealed a 'prepathological' pattern of infantile neurogenic atrophy suggesting spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). However, molecular analyses of SMN (SMA) and IGHMBP2 (SMARD1) genes did not disclose any mutations. Lysosomal changes in mouse skeletal muscle during the repair of exercise injuries

Lysosomal changes of mouse skeletal muscle during the repair of exercise injuries were studied with biochemical, histochemical, and electron microscopic methods. Treadmill running for 4 hours and 9 hours increased the activities of cathepsin C and beta-glucuronidase, but not that of beta-glycerophosphatase in mouse quadriceps femoris muscle. The highest activities occurred 3 days after exertion and were higher after the longer duration of exertion. Similar changes that were highly correlated with the activities of lysosomal enzymes occurred in the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and in the concentration of DNA. The disruption of myofibre structures in skeletal muscle after forced lengthening contractions

Specific antibodies against structural proteins (actin, desmin, dystrophin, fibronectin) of muscle fibres were used to study the effect of forced lengthening contractions on muscle microarchitecture. Tibialis anterior (TA) muscle of male Wistar rats were subjected to 240 forced lengthening contractions. At consecutive time points (0, and 6 h, 2, 4, and 7 days) after stimulation, the TA muscle was excised for biochemical and histological assays. β-Glucuronidase activity, a quantitative indicator of muscle damage, showed increased values 2–7 days after the lengthening, peaking on day 4 (11.7-fold increase).
