Advanced osteosarcoma of the maxilla: A case report

2008

Osteosarcomas are primary malignant bone tumours in which mesenchymal cells produce osteoid. It is generally the most common malignant bone neoplasm, although lesions of the jaw are uncommon. Osteosarcoma of the jaw (JOS) presents a lower incidence of metastasis and a better prognosis than osteosarcoma of the long bones. However, patients with JOS can exhibit advanced tumours, mainly when early diagnosis is not performed. This article reports on a case of an advanced osteosarcoma of the maxilla. A 38-year-old woman was referred for evaluation and treatment of recurrent fibrous dysplasia of the facial bones. The patient related that she had been diagnosed with fibrous dysplasia four years ea…

Risk of temporomandibular joint effusion related to magnetic resonance imaging signs of disc displacement

2009

Background: It has been suggested that TMJ effusion may represent an inflammatory response to a dysfunctional disc-condyle relationship. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether the status of the disc in the temporomandibular joint, as depicted in magnetic resonance (MR) images, is predictive of the presence of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) effusion. Methods: The relationship between disc displacement and TMJ effusion was analyzed in MR images of 154 TMJs in 77 patients complaining for pain and/or dysfunction in the TMJ area and referred from medical practitioners to specialist consultation. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the significant correlation betwee…

Tratamiento de lesiones líticas benignas de hueso con metil-prednisolona acetato: : a propósito de 23 casos

1988

The authors set down their experiences in the treatment of 23 osteolytic bone injuries with intracystic infiltrations of Methylprednisolone acetate. They have both obtained excellent results with the essential osseous cyst and uncertain epiphyseal chondroblastoma in the non-ossifying fibroma and juxta articular osseous cyst, but negative in the aneurismatic osseous cyst.

Bone mineral density of the proximal femur after hip resurfacing arthroplasty: 1-year follow-up study

2011

Abstract Background Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is considered a bone-preserving procedure and may eliminate proximal femoral stress shielding and osteolysis. However, in addition to implant-related stress-shielding factors, various patient-related factors may also have an effect on bone mineral density (BMD) of the proximal femur in patients with HRA. Thus, we studied the effects of stem-neck angle, demographic variables, and physical functioning on the BMD of the proximal femur in a one-year follow-up. Methods Thirty three patients (9 females and 24 males) with a mean (SD) age of 55 (9) years were included in the study. BMD was measured two days and 3, 6, and 12 months postoperative…

Differences in Accuracy and Radiation Dose in Placement of Iliosacral Screws: Comparison between 3D and 2D Fluoroscopy

2022

Percutaneous iliosacral screw fixation is a widely accepted method of stabilizing the posterior pelvic ring. Recently developed tools such as 3D-navigated fluoroscopy and computed navigation seem to prevent a surgeon from conducting screw misplacement. The study aimed to comparatively assess the introduction of sacroiliac screw placement using 2D and 3D fluoroscopy in terms of accuracy and radiation exposure. Iliosacral screws were introduced in 37 patients using 2D (group N1) and in 36 patients using 3D fluoroscopy (group N2) techniques. Overall, 61 and 56 screws were introduced in groups N1 and N2, respectively. Screw placement accuracy was assessed using postoperative computed tomography…

Moves like Jagger - multidimensional attractiveness ratings of opposite-sex dancers

2012

Research has shown that a number of factors, including body symmetry, perceived strenght, vigour, skilfulness, and agility of movements, as well as increased variability and amplitude of the neck and trunk, can affect the attractiveness of dance moves. Perceived femininity/masculinity of body movement likely also plays a role. Here, we compare comprehensive ratings of both male and female dancers' opposite-sex attractiveness, including ratings of femininity/masculinity, with computationally-extracted movement features. Sixty-two heterosexual adult participant watched 48 short audio-visual point-light animations of eight male and eight female adult participants dancing individually to Techno…

Comparison of Postoperative Coronal Leg Alignment in Customized Individually Made and Conventional Total Knee Arthroplasty

2021

Neutral coronal leg alignment is known to be important for postoperative outcome in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Customized individually made implants (CIM) instrumented with patient-specific cutting guides are an innovation aiming to increase the precision and reliability of implant positioning and reconstruction of leg alignment. We aimed to compare reconstruction of the hip–knee–ankle angle (HKA) of the novel CIM system iTotal™ CR G2 (ConforMIS Inc.) to a matched cohort of the off-the-shelf (OTS) knee replacement system Vanguard™ CR (Zimmer Biomet). Retrospective analysis of postoperative coronal full-leg weight-bearing radiographs of 562 TKA (283 CIM TKA, 279 OTS TKA) was conducted. V…
