International audience; Recent studies investigated participation and performance trends in age group half marathoners and full marathoners for a single event. The present study investigated participation and performance trends in age group athletes in all half marathons and full marathons held in a single country during a given period of time. Is Body Fat a Predictor of Race Time in Female Long-Distance Inline Skaters?

Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate predictor variables of race time in female ultra-endurance inliners in the longest inline race in Europe. Methods We investigated the association between anthropometric and training characteristics and race time for 16 female ultra-endurance inline skaters, at the longest inline marathon in Europe, the ‘Inline One-eleven’ over 111 km in Switzerland, using bi- and multivariate analysis. Comparison of bipolar and tetrapolar impedance techniques for assessing fat mass.

Whole body fat mass (BF) can be predicted by different bioimpedance (BIA) techniques measuring the whole body (tetrapolar hand-to-foot technique, HF), lower body (bipolar foot-to-foot technique, FF), or upper body (bipolar hand-to-hand technique, HH). This study analyzed 146 healthy volunteers (age 18-84 years) for whether these three techniques differ in their estimates of BF, and whether sex and age of the subjects influence estimates of BF. In a number of endocrine disorders, typical changes in skin thickness can be observed which make measurement of skin thickness interesting in this field. A newly developed mechanical method for measuring skin thickness is presented. Using a digital measuring screw on the dorsum of the hand with a defined measuring force of 10 newton and a resulting tissue compression of 1500 mm Hg, highly reproducible results were obtained (mean coefficient of variation 2.56%). In 129 women, 37 to 78 years old, body mass index < 30 kg/m2, there was no significant relation between body mass index and skin fold thickness. Muscle strength and body composition as determinants of blood pressure in young men

The correlations of blood pressure to various indices of muscularity and fatness were studied in 183 young healthy men (mean age 19.7, SD 2.1 years). Systolic pressure showed significant positive correlations with body fat percentage, isometric strength of trunk extensors, body mass index, lean body mass, strength of leg extensors, heart rate, and the sum of four skinfolds. Endogenous 3-methylhistidine excretion in healthy women and men with reference to muscle protein metabolism.

Presently 3-methylhistidine excretion is widely used for monitoring the metabolic status of patients during different kinds of clinical conditions. Aim of the study was to reconsider its predicative value on the basis of a larger collective of healthy persons and to find a standardization independent from sex.
