Responses of decomposer community to root-isolation and addition of slash

2001

Abstract We studied the causal relationships between forest harvesting and the soil decomposer community focusing on suppression of energy inputs from trees to the soil through root–mycorrhizal network and increased energy input to the soil in the form of slash left on site. We hypothesised that both of these factors would affect the decomposer community, since the soil food web has been regarded as a system in which the amount of resources controls the numbers of consumers. To study the importance of these factors without changes in microclimate, like in sunshine and shade, taking place in clear-felled areas, the experiment was performed in a mature spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) forest…

Birch (Betula spp.) wood biochar is a potential soil amendment to reduce glyphosate leaching in agricultural soils

2015

Glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine), a commonly used herbicide in agriculture can leach to deeper soil layers and settle in surface- and ground waters. To mitigate the leaching of pesticides and nutrients, biochar has been suggested as a potential soil amendment due to its ability to sorb both organic and inorganic substances. However, the efficiency of biochar in retaining agro-chemicals in the soil is likely to vary with feedstock material and pyrolysis conditions. A greenhouse pot experiment, mimicking a crop rotation cycle of three plant genera, was established to study the effects of pyrolysis temperature on the ability of birch (Betula sp.) wood originated biochar to reduce the l…

"She's straight, you delusional cunt!" : a study on bullying and homophobia in online fandoms

2016

Tutkielmaa varten tehty nettikysely suunnattiin “femslash”-faniryhmille. Näiden ryhmien median kulutukseen kuuluvat esimerkiksi tv-ohjelmien naishahmojen väliset (romanttiset) suhteet ja näistä suhteista puhuminen sekä eri materiaalien (kuten kuvien, videoiden ja fanifiktion) luominen ryhmien henkilöiden kesken. Kyselyn perusteella oli tarkoitus saada selville, miten yleistä näiden ryhmien kokem…

Pollen and Plant Macroremain Analyses for the Reconstruction of Environmental Changes in the Early Metal Period

2006

A sharp increase in human population density and the same time fundamental changes in the location of settlement, moving away from earlier inhabited places points to significant changes in the environment. This period with a sharp decrease in anthropogenic indicators and poor records of slash and burn cultivation and field crop-growing is named “transition” period (Vasks et.al.1998) and indicates the lack of stable and continuous inhabitant sites. This phenomena can be explained by the small size of settlements at the Early Iron Age, expressed by a weak cultural layer and these could be defined as separate farmsteads. Modern farming practices, especially modern tillage, adversely affected t…

Short-term low-severity spring grassland fire impacts on soil extractable elements and soil ratios in Lithuania

2017

Abstract Spring grassland fires are common in boreal areas as a consequence of slash and burn agriculture used to remove dry grass to increase soil nutrient properties and crop production. However, few works have investigated fire impacts on these grassland ecosystems, especially in the immediate period after the fire. The objective of this work was to study the short-term impacts of a spring grassland fire in Lithuania. Four days after the fire we established a 400 m2 sampling grid within the burned area and in an adjacent unburned area with the same topographical, hydrological and pedological characteristics. We collected topsoil samples immediately after the fire (0 months), 2, 5, 7 and …

Perturbative quantum field theory

2000

pQFT In this chapter we repeat the main steps towards a derivation of the Feynman rules, following the well-known path of canonical quantization. This is standard material, and readers who are not acquainted with such topics are referred to [Bjorken and Drell 1965, Bogoliubov and Shirkov 1980, Itzykson and Zuber 1980, Kaku 1993, Weinberg 1995, Peskin and Schroeder 1995, Teller 1997]. We hope that the short summary given here, similar to that in [Kreimer 1997a], is helpful for readers who want to refresh their memory. Having introduced Feynman rules, we next introduce Schwinger–Dyson equations as a motivation for the introduction of Z -factors. We remark on dimensional regularization and giv…

Factors affecting adventitious bud induction in Pinus elliottii (Engelm.) embryos cultured in vitro

1987

Embryos of slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) were induced to form adventitious buds when placed in culture on nutrient media supplemented with cytokinin. Buds were induced on media containing Risser & White major salts. The high content in nitrogen of Murashige & Skoog formulation seems to be deleterious for this in vitro system, since morphogenic responses were only promoted when nitrogen concentration was drastically reduced in the macronutrient formulation. Factors such as concentration of cytokinin (6-benzyladenine) and time and method of exposure (liquid or solid induction medium) strongly influenced bud formation and development. The greatest number of buds and shoots were obtained…

Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof (2007): Subverting Gender through Genre or Vice Versa?

2010

International audience; The article examines how Death Proof (Tarantino, 2007) subverts both gender and genre by mixing several genres (the slasher, the car movie, the buddy movie) generally considered to be male, either at the diegetic level (e.g. the main characters) or at the level of reception (i.e. the target audience). The film's play on gender and genre, which is clearly based on the idea that film genres are gendered, is, then, enabled by the very discursivity of these norms. The article also shows how Tarantino took into account feminist film theory, namely Carol Clover and Laura Mulvey, when making Death Proof, suggesting that film genre, for Tarantino, is not so much a matter of …

Fourfold Increase in Pumpkin Yield in Response to Low-Dosage Root Zone Application of Urine-Enhanced Biochar to a Fertile Tropical Soil

2015

A widely abundant and invasive forest shrub, Eupatorium adenophorum, was pyrolyzed in a cost-efficient flame curtain kiln to produce biochar. The resulting biochar fulfilled all the requirements for premium quality, according to the European Biochar Certificate. The biochar was either applied alone or mixed with fresh cow urine (1:1 volume) to test its capacity to serve as slow release fertilizer in a pumpkin field trial in Nepal. Treatments included cow-manure compost combined with (i) urine-only; (ii) biochar-only or (iii) urine-loaded biochar. All materials were applied directly to the root zone at a biochar dry matter content of 750 kg·ha−1 before seeding. The urine-biochar treatment le…
