Increased frequency of migraine in narcoleptic patients

We explored the relationship between narcolepsy and different types of headaches. We interviewed 68 patients with idiopathic narcolepsy for the presence of headache symptoms based on the criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS). Eighty-one percent of the patients reported headaches that warranted an IHS headache diagnosis. Fifty-four percent of the patients (64% women, 35% men) had migraine with all IHS criteria fulfilled.

Macrostructural EEG characterization based on nonparametric change point segmentation: application to sleep analysis

In the present investigation a new methodology for macrostructural EEG characterization based on automatic segmentation has been applied to sleep analysis. A nonparametric statistical approach for EEG segmentation was chosen, because it minimizes the need for a priori information about a signal. The method provides the detection of change-points i.e. boundaries between quasi-stationary EEG segments based on the EEG characteristics within four fundamental frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha and beta). Mental load during cognitive performance in complex regional pain syndrome I.

Background Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is associated with deficits in limb recognition. The purpose of our study was to determine whether mental load during this task affected performance, sympathetic nervous system activity or pain in CRPS patients. Methods We investigated twenty CRPS‐I patients with pain in the upper extremity and twenty age‐ and sex‐matched healthy controls. Each participant completed a limb recognition task. Dynamical properties of the sleep EEG in different frequency bands.

The information concerning the dynamic behavior of the sleep process gained by the usual evaluation of sleep EEGs according to the criteria of Rechtschaffen and Kales is limited. Therefore a new methodical approach is presented, which is a special case of spectral analyzed data processing. After digital band-pass filtering of the sleep EEG the root-mean-square (RMS) value of successive 20 s EEG epochs is calculated in defined frequency ranges.
