Moving multi-loads problem in layered cracked beams with interlayer slip

2017

This contribution concerns the vibration response of layered cracked uniform beams with interlayer slip under moving multiple loads. Considering a linear constitutive relation between the horizontal slip and the interlaminar shear force, the Euler-Bernoulli hypothesis is assumed to hold for each layer separately. Modeling cracks as internal elastic rotational joints, related discontinuities of the response variables are treated by the theory of generalized functions. In this manner, exact eigenfunctions are derived from a characteristic equation built as determinant of 6x6 matrix, for any number of cracks. Building pertinent orthogonality conditions for the deflection eigenfunctions, the re…

Distribution of Intraocular Pressure and Its Association with Ocular Features and Cardiovascular Risk Factors

2013

Purpose To describe the distribution of intraocular pressure (IOP) and its association with ocular features and cardiovascular risk factors in an adult European cohort. Design Population-based, cross-sectional study. Participants This analysis was based on a Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) cohort that included 4335 eligible enrollees from among 5000 subjects who participated in the survey from 2007 through 2008. The age range was 35 to 74 years at enrollment. Methods Participants underwent a standardized protocol with a comprehensive questionnaire; ophthalmic examination including slit-lamp biomicroscopy, noncontact tonometry, fundus photography, central corneal thickness measurement, and visu…

RELAZIONI TRA PARAMETRI LIPIDICI E MASSA VENTRICOLARE SINISTRA IN SOGGETTI CON IPERTENSIONE ARTERIOSA ESSENZIALE

2014

High dynamic resistance elements based on a Josephson junction array

2020

A chain of superconductor–insulator–superconductor junctions based on Al–AlOx–Al nanostructures and fabricated using conventional lift-off lithography techniques was measured at ultra-low temperatures. At zero magnetic field, the low current bias dynamic resistance can reach values of ≈1011 Ω. It was demonstrated that the system can provide a decent quality current biasing circuit, enabling the observation of Coulomb blockade and Bloch oscillations in ultra-narrow Ti nanowires associated with the quantum phase-slip effect.

Glomerular Filtration Rate in Renal Damage

2015

Renal function is mainly represented by the glomerular filtration (GF), which is dependent on the number and function of the nephrons. Glomerular filtration declines progressively after the third decade with a progressive loss of 1 % per year. In addition to diseases producing direct damage in the glomerular structures, high blood pressure values, diabetes, and dyslipidemia are the main factors increasing the rate of GF decline over the years. Other functional parameters of the kidney such as renal plasma flow or tubular functions are not measured in daily practice in hypertension and are not related to risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Importation and Trade of African Pottery in the Ancient Ecclesia Carinensis During the Late Roman Age

2015

The territory of Carini, on the northwest coast of Sicily, 30 km from Palermo, is often mentioned by ancient sources. According Thucydides in this area was located the ancient Hykkara. Itinerarium Antonini recalls the statio of Hykkara along the via Valeria. This route in Late Antiquity became very important for the deportatio ad aquam of the agricoltural products. Gregorius Magnus in the epistles (VI century A.D.) mentions a diocese of Karines, as witnessed alike by the acts of synods to 782. The archaeological excavations, still ongoing, in the Early Christian cemetery nearby the little modern town of Villagrazia di Carini have revealed the presence of a strong Christian community. The se…

A comparison of numerical surface topography calculations in geodynamic modelling: an evaluation of the ‘sticky air’ method

2012

SUMMARY Calculating surface topography in geodynamic models is a common numerical problem. Besides other approaches, the so-called ‘sticky air’ approach has gained interest as a free-surface proxy at the top boundary. The often used free slip condition is thereby vertically extended by introducing a low density, low viscosityfluid layer. This allows the air/crust interface to behave in a similar manner to a true free surface. We present here a theoretical analysis that provides the physical conditions under which the sticky air approach is a valid approximation of a true free surface. Two cases are evaluated that characterize the evolution of topography on different timescales: (1) isostati…

Hepatic CB1 receptor is required for development of diet-induced steatosis, dyslipidemia, and insulin and leptin resistance in mice

2007

Diet-induced obesity is associated with fatty liver, insulin resistance, leptin resistance, and changes in plasma lipid profile. Endocannabinoids have been implicated in the development of these associated phenotypes, because mice deficient for the cannabinoid receptor CB1 (CB1-/-) do not display these changes in association with diet-induced obesity. The target tissues that mediate these effects, however, remain unknown. We therefore investigated the relative role of hepatic versus extrahepatic CB1 receptors in the metabolic consequences of a high-fat diet, using liver-specific CB1 knockout (LCB1-/-) mice. LCB1(-/-) mice fed a high-fat diet developed a similar degree of obesity as that of …

Shear sense indicators in striped bedding-veins

2000

Striped bedding-veins are veins that lie subparallel to bedding and have an internal layering or lineation at a small angle to the veins’ long axis. They form during bedding-parallel slip and can be used as shear sense indicators. Solid inclusion trails produce the visible internal layering or lineation and track the opening direction of the veins. Elongate quartz crystals however can be oriented at an angle of up to 80° to the opening direction, are non-tracking, and contain almost no information on the shear sense. The striped bedding-veins can be separated into three types according to the geometry of their internal segmentation. Veins of type B opened parallel to jogs oriented at a low …
