Structural overprint of a late Paleozoic accretionary system in north-central Chile (34°-35°S) during post-accretional deformation
2009
Beyond The Ignorant Schoolmaster : On Education, Marxism, and Psychoanalysis
2016
This first chapter introduces the main concepts of Marxist sociology and Freudian psychoanalysis, two theories that have been intensely devoted to investigating and overcoming the epistemological effects caused by the phenomenal forms which inhered in the mode of production and the psychic apparatus, their respective subject matters. Their two prominent spearheads, Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud, soon understood that their scientific endeavors depended on deciphering the mechanisms which, in each case, generated these distorted reflections. These mechanisms were class division—the complex network that in any given social milieu consolidates around specific relations of production—and the split…
Analysis of oblique rebound using a redefinition of the coefficient of tangential restitution coefficient
2013
Abstract A redefinition of the coefficient of tangential restitution based on the separation of friction and restitution effects is presented. Using this modified coefficient of tangential restitution and the usual definitions of the coefficients of normal restitution and sliding friction, a description of oblique impacts in both stick and slip regimes is obtained. This, description, which is tested with available rebound data in literature, avoids sharp (apparent) variations in the coefficient tangential restitution with impact angle and can justify anomalous results reported by Calsamiglia et al. (1999) .

Crispr gene editing in lipid disorders and atherosclerosis: Mechanisms and opportunities
2021
Elevated circulating concentrations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have been conclusively demonstrated in epidemiological and intervention studies to be causally associated with the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Enormous advances in LDL-C reduction have been achieved through the use of statins, and in recent years, through drugs targeting proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), a key regulator of the hepatic LDL-receptor. Existing approaches to PCSK9 targeting have used monoclonal antibodies or RNA interference. Although these approaches do not require daily dosing, as statins do, repeated subcutaneous injections are nevertheless neces…
Displacement Evolution of a Large Landslide in a Highly Fissured Clay
2019
The paper presents an analysis and modelling of the reactivation mechanism of a large landslide caused by rainfall, located in Cerda (Sicily, Italy). The study is based on data collected by means of a field investigation, carried out in order to assess the geotechnical properties of the involved material, and a three-year monitoring programme implemented to measure rain and pore water pressures as well as deep and superficial displacements. Three distinct landslides, evolving at variable rates in different directions, were recognized within the overall landslide area. The data clearly show the mechanical role of pore water pressures in the stability of the slope and point out the dependence…
Three-Dimensional Superconducting Nanohelices Grown by He+-Focused-Ion-Beam Direct Writing
2019
Novel schemes based on the design of complex three-dimensional (3D) nanoscale architectures are required for the development of the next generation of advanced electronic components. He+ focused-ion-beam (FIB) microscopy in combination with a precursor gas allows one to fabricate 3D nanostructures with an extreme resolution and a considerably higher aspect ratio than FIB-based methods, such as Ga+ FIB-induced deposition, or other additive manufacturing technologies. In this work, we report the fabrication of 3D tungsten carbide nanohelices with on-demand geometries via controlling key deposition parameters. Our results show the smallest and highest-densely packed nanohelix ever fabricated s…

Different primary and secondary prevention studies have documented that a greater degree of reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels is associated with a greater decrease in cardiovascular event rates. PCSK9 inhibitors achieve important, rapid and sustained decreases in LDL-C. New clinical practice guidelines for the management of dyslipidemia establish reduced target levels of LDL-C. These goals are hardly achievable with a statin-only treatment, even in combination with ezetimibe. The addition of PCSK9 inhibitors can play a determining role in achieving these recommendations. However, it is important to identify the patient subgroups that can most benefit from this …
