Three-Dimensional Superconducting Nanohelices Grown by He
2019
Novel schemes based on the design of complex three-dimensional (3D) nanoscale architectures are required for the development of the next generation of advanced electronic components. He+ focused-ion-beam (FIB) microscopy in combination with a precursor gas allows one to fabricate 3D nanostructures with an extreme resolution and a considerably higher aspect ratio than FIB-based methods, such as Ga+ FIB-induced deposition, or other additive manufacturing technologies. In this work, we report the fabrication of 3D tungsten carbide nanohelices with on-demand geometries via controlling key deposition parameters. Our results show the smallest and highest-densely packed nanohelix ever fabricated s…
Lipoprotein Subfractions in Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity: Clinical Significance and Therapeutic Approaches
2013
Small, dense low density lipoprotein (sdLDL) represents an emerging cardiovascular risk factor, since these particles can be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) independently of established risk factors, including plasma lipids. Obese subjects frequently have atherogenic dyslipidaemia, including elevated sdLDL levels, in addition to elevated triglycerides (TG), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and apolipoprotein-B, as well as decreased high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. Obesity-related co-morbidities, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS) are also characterized by dyslipidaemia. Therefore, agents that favourably modulate LDL subclasses may be of clinical value in t…
Induction of body weight loss through RNAi-knockdown of APOBEC1 gene expression in transgenic rabbits
2014
In the search of new strategies to fight against obesity, we targeted a gene pathway involved in energy uptake. We have thus investigated the APOB mRNA editing protein (APOBEC1) gene pathway that is involved in fat absorption in the intestine. The APOB gene encodes two proteins, APOB100 and APOB48, via the editing of a single nucleotide in the APOB mRNA by the APOBEC1 enzyme. The APOB48 protein is mandatory for the synthesis of chylomicrons by intestinal cells to transport dietary lipids and cholesterol. We produced transgenic rabbits expressing permanently and ubiquitously a small hairpin RNA targeting the rabbit APOBEC1 mRNA. These rabbits exhibited a moderately but significantly reduced …
The influence of coconut fibre and salts composite used for eliminating slipperiness and on roads on soils = Wpływ kompozytu mieszanki włókien kokoso…
2015
The subject of the study is analyzing the impact of coconut fibre and salt mixture used for eliminating slipperiness on roads on roadside soil. The tests were done on the soil samples taken from the fixed areas twice: in the autumn before applying the composite and in the following spring. Laboratory tests indicated decrease of conduciveness in soil after using the composite in wintertime. This can cause decreasing saltiness of roadside soil. In contrast to commonly used methods of eliminating slipperiness on roads with salts only applying the composite could diminish the negative effects of roadside soil saltiness.
Atherosclerosis Development and Progression: The Role of Atherogenic Small, Dense LDL.
2022
Atherosclerosis is responsible for large cardiovascular mortality in many countries globally. It has been shown over the last decades that the reduction of atherosclerotic progression is a critical factor for preventing future cardiovascular events. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) have been successfully targeted, and their reduction is one of the key preventing measures in patients with atherosclerotic disease. LDL particles are pivotal for the formation and progression of atherosclerotic plaques; yet, they are quite heterogeneous, and smaller, denser LDL species are the most atherogenic. These particles have greater arterial entry and retention, higher susceptibility to oxidation, as well a…
Plio-Pleistocene strike-slip deformation in NE Sicily: the example of the area between Capo Calavà and Capo Tindari
2005
The Peloritani Mts. in Northeastern Sicily are part of the Sicilian orogenic belt interposed between the Tyrrhenian basin and the Ionian Basin. In the Tyrrhenian basin crustal thinning has been active since the late Miocene, whereas wedge accretion (External Calabrian Arc) has occurred in the Ionian basin, due to the north-westward subduction of the Ionian Plate below the Calabrian-Peloritani Arc. Strike-slip tectonics in NE Sicily occurred during Plio-Pleistocene times. Faulting caused a non-uniform uplift rate of the Plio-Pleistocene deposits, which are elevated up to 500 m above sea level. The structural pattern is mainly represented by NW-SE and N-S/NNE-SSW trending transcurrent faults …
Quantum fluctuations in superconducting nanostructures
2014
Modern nanofabrication technology enableTfabrication of very narrow quasi-1-dimensional superconducting nanowires demonstrating finite resistivity within the range of experimentally obtainable temperatures. The observations were reported in ∼10 nm nanowires of certain superconducting materials. The effect has been associated with quantum phase slip process - the particular manifestation of quantum fluctuations of the order p arameter. In titanium, the phenomenon can be observed already at dimensions ∼35 nm where the fabrication is well reproducible and the dimensions of samples can be characterized with high accuracy. We have performed systematic study of the size dependence of transport pr…
On the friction/tangential restitution problem: Independent friction-restitution modeling of sphere rebound with arbitrary spin
2023
Most descriptions of collision events introduce coefficients of friction and tangential restitution which vary significantly with the impact angle, in contrast with the independence of the normal coefficient of restitution with this parameter. A redefinition of the coefficients of friction and tangential restitution based on the idea that friction and restitution effects can be treated as being mutually independent, provides a satisfactory description of experimental data using a ‘constant’ restitution coefficient independent on the impact angle. This independent friction-restitution modeling is developed here for the rebound of a homogeneous sphere having an arbitrary spin on a rough massi…
Hydro-mechanical modelling of a natural slope affected by a multiple slip surface failure mechanism
2009
A coupled hydro-mechanical formulation is presented for the analysis of landslide motion during crisis episodes. The mathematical formulation is used to model a natural slope affected by a multiple slip surface failure mechanism, in which pore water pressure evolution was identified as the main cause for movement accelerations. An elasto-plastic constitutive model is adopted for the behaviour of slip surfaces. Material parameters are obtained by combining the available laboratory tests and the back analysis of some crisis episodes. After being calibrated and validated, the model is applied to improve the understanding of the physical processes involved and to predict the landslide behaviour…
