Multi-stimuli responsive polymers – the all-in-one talents
2014
Stimuli-responsive polymers have gained increasing attention, which is attributed to the manifold applications they can be used for. Several years' intensive research was invested in stimuli-responsive polymers. Their stimuli-responsiveness led not only to novel responsive groups, which enabled the translation of an external physical impact into a change of a material property, but also to polymers that are equipped with more than one responsive group. The integration of several responsive moieties within one polymer yields smart polymers exhibiting complex responsive behaviour of the polymers. This review summarises recent developments in the area of multi-stimuli responsive polymers, layi…
A cross-sectional study on smartphone uses among pregnant women attending childbirth classes in the Metropolitan Area of Palermo, Italy: The Stop-Pho…
2022
Background: Prevalence of mobile device addiction has increased over the years; both women and men have assimilated the mobile phone as a central component of their personal existence: integrating it into their lifestyle or becoming so dependent on it that life without it has become unimaginable. Smartphones generate radio-frequency electromagnetic fields. While short-term exposure in adults was considered quite safe, effects of long-term exposure or exposure during pregnancy on fetuses or during breastfeeding on newborns are not well studied yet. The objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence and usage characteristics of smartphones among a sample of pregnant women, a…
Smart Cities Atlas
2014
New and fascinating examples about innovation in cities come from t…
Sharing practices in the digital age: inclusive processes and new citizens in the intelligent city
2015
The smart city model is here described according to the most recent studies on the topic. Ind…
Inteligentna (smart) logistyka miejska
2016
The concepts of city logistics its not new, they are implemented since the 80's of the XX century, but to this time they didn't bring any effect. The communications problem in the agglomerations are bigger and bigger. It makes that searching a new Solutions (e.g. intelligent information and communication system) is necessary. The use of this Systems makes that city and logistic are becoming smart. The aim of this article is to present intelligent solutions, which can be implemented to city logistics. Additionaly the author shows that the mobility concept may help to improve the quality of life.
The automatic analysis of classroom talk
2017
The SMART SPEECH Project is a joint venture between three Finnish universities and a Chilean university. The aim is to develop a mobile application that can be used to record classroom talk and enable observations to be made of classroom interactions. We recorded Finnish and Chilean physics teachers’ speech using both a conventional microphone/dictator setup and a microphone/mobile application setup. The recordings were analysed via automatic speech recognition (ASR). The average word error rate achieved for the Finnish teachers’ speech was under 40%. The ASR approach also enabled us to determine the key topics discussed within the Finnish physics lessons under scrutiny. The results here we…

Early Effects of No-Till Use on Durum Wheat (Triticum durum Desf.): Productivity and Soil Functioning Vary between Two Contrasting Mediterranean Soils
2022
The diffusion of no-tillage (NT) is to be encouraged because of the benefits it can provide in terms of improving soil fertility and counteracting global warming and climate change as part of climate-smart agriculture practices. However, the introduction of this management can be difficult, especially in the first years of application, and can lead to unpredictable yield results depending on the soil type. Therefore, the aim of this experiment was to evaluate the early effect of NT use, compared to the conventional mouldboard ploughing (CT), on two different soils, a clay-loam (GAL) and a sandy-clay-loam soil (SMA), by monitoring a set of 43 different soil and plant variables that were expe…
Subsoil Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi for Sustainability and Climate-Smart Agriculture: A Solution Right Under Our Feet?
2019
With growing populations and climate change, assuring food and nutrition security is an increasingly challenging task. Climate-smart and sustainable agriculture, that is, conceiving agriculture to be resistant and resilient to a changing climate while keeping it viable in the long term, is probably the best solution. The role of soil biota and particularly arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in this new agriculture is believed to be of paramount importance. However, the large nutrient pools and the microbiota of subsoils are rarely considered in the equation. Here we explore the potential contributions of subsoil AM fungi to a reduced and more efficient fertilization, carbon sequestration, an…
