Sociabilty and Leisure in Italy from Unity to Present
2017
The Italian history of the practices and forms of leisure relies on a series of solid and well credited, albeit recent, studies (Pivato and Tonelli, 2001; Cavazza, 2003, 2005; Cavazza and Scalpellini, 2006; Tarozzi and Viani, 1992). In this chapter we mostly draw from this literature in order to interpret the history of leisure as the history of change in the Italian forms of sodalité, sociabilité and socialité across 150 years (from unity to present). In the first part, by using a specific interpretative scheme (Lo Verde, 2009), we describe the forms and practices of leisure and their changes in three different historical periods which basically coincide with the three different regimes es…
What happened to body-to-body sociability?
2013
This article aims to investigate how the body-to-body forms of sociability evolved from 1996 to 2009 simultaneously with the proliferation of ICTs in Europe and why this happened. The article also aims to find out how the socio-demographic profile of Europeans practising these forms developed in the same period of time. The analysis is based on two surveys carried out in Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain in 1996 (N = 6609) and 2009 (N = 7255). Results show that although the internal diffusion and frequency of the forms of communicative sociability changed, on the whole the amount of sociability has increased so slightly that it would be more appropriate to speak about rea…

Women in Patriotic Societies: A Spanish Debate in a European Context
2022
This chapter examines in its European context the discussions maintained from 1776 to 1787 over the admission of women to the Economic Society of Madrid, one of the patriotic societies founded in the eighteenth century and representative of Enlightened reforming ideals and models of sociability. The debate assumed a wide resonance and was seen by contemporaries as a turning point, opening up no less than a “political revolution. It was connected, to a larger extent than has been acknowledged up to now, to European discussions about the nature of gender difference, women’s education and their access to public spaces (academies, literary, scientific and reforming societies. Taking place in a …

Il Bingo. Consociazioni fra disaffiliati in una sala giochi siciliana
2017
Analysing customers attending a Sicilian Bingo hall, the article identifies a subsidiary kind of sociability for those people who, due to traumatic events such as losing a job, the death of a spouse or divorce, have experienced a progressive estrangement from their usual social life, and the consequent weakening or loss of bonds of solidarity. The concepts of «consociation» and «disaffiliation» are the interpretative frames of analysis adopted by the author to examine the material collected from 30 semi-structured interviews with players selected from a larger sample of 160 frequent customers of the Bingo hall in the city of Marsala. The Bingo hall allows the creation of alternative forms o…
