Towards Socio-material Research Approaches in Language Education
2022
AbstractThis chapter outlines the socio-material framing of the book that it opens. We situate this volume materially not only in the discipline of applied linguistics and language education, but also in the long tradition of applied language studies at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland and the community there. In doing so, the book builds on the authors’ roots in social constructionist thought and explicates why an orientation towards new materialism may be useful for a consideration of equity issues in language education. Socio-materialism fosters a critical, transformative perspective and encourages an ontological ethical grounding of research, thus providing a starting point for re…
“Dear Young People, don’t vote”. Seniors in political advertisements: irony and/or legitimation
2019
The widespread representation of older people in popular culture as passive and inert has been challenged in a range of recent studies and publications (Nussbaum / Coupland 2004, Caprara et al. 2013). In view of the increasing number of older adults in today’s society, the notion of aging has received significant attention in the public sphere where common assumptions and stereotypes are challenged and potential scenarios are presented. As it has been discussed from different academic perspectives over the past twenty years, older people’s collective condition is undergoing important sociological and cultural changes, making the elderly - among other things - an enticing political reservoir…
Seniors’ social image: the representation of ageing in electoral campaigns
2019
This study builds on previous research on ageing representation in relation to common assumptions and stereotypes (Schneider & Ingram 1993; Holladay & Coombs 2004, Kaid & Garner 2004), in order to provide an overview of the ways in which older adults have been addressed and exploited in US political (i.e. electoral) campaigns. Considering campaign ads as multimodal texts, Kress & van Leeuwen’s social semiotic approach (2001) is used to examine how multimodal elements convey seniors’ images. In addition, this analysis draws on legitimation theory (van Leeuwen 2008) to analyse which legitimation tactic is employed to convey meanings through the voice of elderly people. In this…

Startup-sijoittajat portinvartijoina journalismin kentällä
2023
Startup-yritysten roolista journalismin uudistajina on ristiriitaisia näkemyksiä, mutta niiden katsotaan kuitenkin yleisesti tuovan alalle uusia toimintamalleja ja haastavan vakiintuneita instituutioita. Sijoittajien merkitys journalistisen startup-yrittämisen kentällä on jäänyt vähälle huomiolle, vaikka he viime kädessä päättävät, millaiset yritykset saavat mahdollisuuden käynnistää tai kehittää toimintaansa. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastelemme startup-sijoittajia SCOT-teorian kehyksessä journalismin portinvartijoina ja journalistiseen metadiskurssiin osallistuvina keskustelijoina, joilla on alan kehittämiseen liittyvää valtaa ja vastuuta. Tavoitteenamme on tarkentaa kuvaa siitä, millaiset a…

Attention was paid also to the male therapist’s positions in these situations. The topic was approached from a social constructionist and discourse analytic point of view and Grounded Theory was used as the method of analysing the data. The data consisted of five therapy groups for male batterers, each of which gath…

Deconstruction and hermeneutical space as keys to understanding the rural
2020
The purpose of this article is to complement the existing literature on defining the rural by suggesting a novel approach that makes possible a holistic understanding of the rural. The proposed approach is based on deconstruction of the concept of the rural and on hermeneutical philosophy. The current approaches applied in rural studies are evaluated through the lens of holistic understanding, and solutions to the observed problems are discussed. The problems of current rural studies stem from inadequate conceptualization and biased social theory. The conceptual problems can be alleviated, firstly, by understanding the concept of space not only literally but also figuratively. Secondly, the…
