Review Paper: Are reproductive skew models evolutionarily stable?

2003

Reproductive skew theory has become a popular way to phrase problems and test hypotheses of social evolution. The diversity of reproductive skew models probably stems from the ease of generating new variations. However, I show that the logical basis of skew models, that is, the way in which group formation is modelled, makes use of hidden assumptions that may be problematical as they are unlikely to be fulfilled in all social systems. I illustrate these problems by re-analysing the basic concessive skew model with staying incentives. First, the model assumes that dispersal is an all-or-nothing response: all subordinates disperse as soon as concessions drop below a certain value. This leads …

Unite against: A common threat invokes spontaneous decategorization between social categories

2019

Abstract A frequent rhetoric in the political arena calls members of larger groups like nations to lay aside all dividing differences and unite in face of a common threat. In the present research we sought to test whether such a unifying effect of external threat already manifests in such basic cognitive processes as automatic categorization even for such strong schisms as the ones between black and white Americans or Israeli Jews and Arabs. In Studies 1 & 2 (N = 183/144, USA), we established the decategorization effect in the context of black and white US Americans. In Study 3, we showed the effect again in a German lab for the gender category (N = 101). In Study 4 (N = 168, Israel), we tr…

LAS PERSONAS TRANS E INTERSEXUALES EN EL DEPORTE COMPETITIVO ESPAÑOL: TRES CASOS

2020

1999

Liikkeenjohdon konsultoinnin professionaalistumista on Suomessa tutkittu vuosikymmenen puolivälissä. Monet ulkoiset muutostekijät luovat kuitenkin tarvetta professionaalistumisprosessin etenemiselle. Professio kuvaa joukkoa ihmisiä, joilla on samanlainen koulutuksellinen tausta, siihen liittyvä tiedeperusta ja näihin liittyvä yhteiskunnan hyväksyntä ammatillisine ja eettisine normistoineen. Artikkelissa käsitellään profession muodostumista liikkeenjohdon konsultoinnissa. Kirjoittaja näkee toimialan arvoketjuna. Sen muodostavat …

Tensions in Online Communities: The Case of a Mass Size eParticipation Initiative

2017

Part 4: Critical Reflections; International audience; While Online Communities (OCs) are increasingly used to involve people in organizations and societies, few studies focus on how OC influence political decision making within eParticipation initiatives. This issue is explored through an interpretive case-study of the Italian Five Star Movement (M5S), a mass-size eParticipation political initiative recently founded by private citizens. The use of OCs is a common strategy to involve groups of people to easily connect on-line, cooperating on common and shared interests. We here focus on understanding the internal and external forces influencing on the OCs, to better understand how to manage …

Oligarchies and Client Systems in Rural communities in the South of the Crown of Aragón (13th to 15th Centuries)

2010

Studies of late medieval Hispanic client systems generally focus on networks of noble power, to the exclusion of the peasantry. This is doubtless in part because the peasantry has traditionally been considered to represent a largely homogenous social group defined in opposition to the feudal nobility, whose members defended common interests. However, the last few years have witnessed a profusion of studies into the rural, or peasant, elites of Western Europe during the late medieval and modern periods, and these highlight not only significant disparities between the economic status of those and that of the remainder of the peasantry, but also their employment of specific power-mechanisms in…

An Ethnographic Study of Deaf Refugees Seeking Asylum in Finland

2019

Deaf asylum seekers are a marginalized group of people in refugee and forced migration studies. The aim of this paper is to explore and highlight the experiences of deaf asylum seekers in the asylum procedure in Finland. The data come from linguistic ethnographic methods, interviews, and ethnographic observation with 10 deaf asylum seekers. While living in the reception centers, the study participants have faced a range of linguistic and social challenges. The findings show that language barriers appeared from day one after the participants&rsquo
