Reliability and Validity of Family Affluence Scale (FAS II) among Adolescents in Beijing, China

2011

This study comprises two sub-studies. Study I assessed the test-retest reliability of Family Affluence Scale (FAS II) items among 95 students aged 11 and 15 years old in Beijing. Study II investigated the completion rate of traditional indicators (parents’ educational level, perceived family wealth, resident area, and school location) measuring socioeconomic status (SES) compared with FAS II, and examined the internal reliability, external and construct validity of the FAS II items in a population of 5876 schoolchildren aged 11, 13 and 15 years old in Beijing. Our study found that the FAS II items have high completion rates (> 99%) which are better than other SES indicators. Analyses of rel…

Factors related to coping with physical and instrumental activities of daily living among people born in 1904-1923

1993

Functional ability is affected by a number of different factors, including biological ageing, illness, and living environment. This study was concerned with the connections of functional ability with mood and cognitive capacity in elderly individuals. It forms part of a cross-sectional study which was carried out in 1988, involving two random samples of 800 non-institutionalized persons born in 1904–1913 and 1914–1923. Functional ability tests included 18 questions; eight concerned coping with physical activities of daily living (PADL) and 10 instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). P2-290 Socioeconomic status and mortality among people with diabetes mellitus in Latvia

2011

Introduction The chronic course of the disease and regular need for healthcare suggests that people with diabetes mellitus might be more affected by the socioeconomic inequalities in health. We assessed whether socioeconomic differences exist in mortality of diabetes patients in Latvia. Methods The study population consisted of 4179 diabetes patients (1339 men and 2840 women) participating in the Latvian diabetes survey in 2000. All deaths (n=1771) during a subsequent ten-year period and causes of death were identified through the Causes of Death Data Base. The Cox model was used to test associations (HR (95% CI) presented) between education, income and residence (rural/urban) and mortality…

Neighborhood built environment and socio-economic status in relation to multiple health outcomes in adolescents.

2017

Abstract The study aim was to examine associations of neighborhood built environment and neighborhood socio-economic status (SES) with multiple physical activity (PA) behaviors, sedentary time, and obesity indicators among adolescents. Cross-sectional study of 325 adolescents aged 14–18 years recruited from schools in Valencia, Spain. Participants' home neighborhoods were classified according to walkability and SES levels. Walkability was defined as an index of three built environment characteristics (i.e., residential density, land use mix, and street connectivity) based on geographic information system data. Moderate-vigorous PA (MVPA) and sedentary time were assessed using accelerometers…

Number of meals eaten in relation to weight status among Norwegian adolescents.

2010

Aim: To assess the relationship between number of meals eaten and weight status, and to assess potential confounders of this relationship. Methods: A total of 2870 (participation rate: 85%) 9th and 10th graders (mean age: 15.5 years) at 33 schools completed questionnaires in May 2005. Number of meals was measured with questions asking whether they ate breakfast, lunch, dinner, and supper the day before, giving a scale ranging from zero to four meals/day. Data on gender, height, weight, education plans, intake of fruits and vegetables, consumption of unhealthy snacks, TV/computer time, physical activity level, and dieting were also collected. Difficulties in mobility among elderly people and their association with socioeconomic factors, dwelling environment and use of services.

1995

The purpose of this study was to clarify the extent to which elderly people have difficulties in mobility, and determine their association with socioeconomic factors, dwelling environment and use of services. The study groups were composed of two random samples of 800 persons aged 65–74 and 75–84, respectively. In all, 1224 non- institutionalized persons (80%) were interviewed at home. The respondents were asked to assess their ability to get about the house, negotiate stairs and walk outdoors, as well as manage certain physical exercise tasks. Intellectual ability in young adulthood as an antecedent of physical functioning in older age.

Objectives: low cognitive ability is associated with subsequent functional disability. Whether this association extends across adult life has been little studied. The aim of this study was to examine the association between intellectual ability in young adulthood and physical functioning during a 10-year follow-up in older age. Methods: three hundred and sixty persons of the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study (HBCS) male members, born between 1934 and 1944 and residing in Finland in 1971, took part in The Finnish Defence Forces Basic Intellectual Ability Test during the first 2 weeks of their military service training between 1952 and 1972. Introduction of a school fruit program is associated with reduced frequency of consumption of unhealthy snacks.

2012

Background: A diet high in fruit and vegetables (FV) is inversely related to chronic diseases, and some studies suggest that increasing the intake of FV reduces the intake of unhealthy snacks. Objectives: The objectives were to analyze changes in the frequency of consumption of unhealthy snacks (soda, candy, and potato chips) from 2001 to 2008 in Norwegian children, to assess whether being part of a school fruit program reduces the frequency of unhealthy snack consumption, and to explore differences in sex and socioeconomic status. Design: Within the project Fruits and Vegetables Make the Marks, 1488 sixth- and seventh-grade pupils from 27 Norwegian elementary schools completed a questionna…
