Company matters: Goal-related social capital in the transition to working life

2005

Abstract Using longitudinal data on 343 young adults, the present study investigated the social ties involved in young adults’ work-related goals, how these ties change during transition to working life, and whether social ties contribute to success in dealing with the transition. The results showed that goal-relevant social ties reflected changes in the young adults’ developmental context. Furthermore, social ties that included a person with high socioeconomic status and weaker social ties contributed to employment success, whereas social ties containing one’s supervisor were associated with quality of employment. The results also showed that goal-related social hindrance increased young a…

Small changes, big impacts: Geographic expansion in small-scale fisheries

2020

Abstract Small-scale fisheries are an important, yet neglected, millenarian activity that has been undergoing significant changes that threaten its future. Understanding how this activity is spatially distributed and the factors that drive its use of the marine space over time can shed some light on how fishing efforts and their impacts have moved over different parts of coastal marine ecosystems. This study investigated changes to the spatial distribution of small-scale fisheries along the Brazilian equatorial region between 1994 and 2014 and the factors, from ecological to socioeconomic, that influenced this shift. Bayesian hierarchical spatial models were used together with environmental…

Wykorzystanie zasobów baz danych GIS na potrzeby analizy zróżnicowania obszarów wiejskich w aspekcie działań PROW = Application of GIS databases for …

2018

Realizacja działań w ramach Programu Rozwoju Obszarów Wiejskich (PROW) wymaga obiektywnego rozpoznania potrzeb ich wdrażania, w oparciu o wyniki analiz złożonych procesów przyrodniczych i ekono- miczno-demograficznych zachodzących w czasie i przestrzeni obszarów wiejskich. Wzrastająca funkcjonalność Systemów Informacji Geograficznej (GIS) oraz powszechna dostępność do informacji przestrzennej spowodowały, że bazy danych GIS i analizy geoprzestrzenne stały się skutecznym narzędziem wpierającym implementację działań PROW. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie możliwości wykorzystania danych geoinformacyjnych wybranych baz danych GIS do analizy zróżnicowania przestrzennego obszarów wiejskich wojewód…

Identity in First and Second Generation Migrants Belonging to a Tunisian Community in Mazara del Vallo (Sicily)

2015

In Sicily, the increasing presence of immigrants has given the society an important challenge which has also required the adoption of an intercultural view and intervention designed to deepen the needs of migrants. Immigrants living in Sicily are distributed above all in coastal areas. The most numerous migrant communities come from Romania, Tunisia and Morocco. In the province of Trapani, the presence of foreigners reflects the regional distribution with migrants from Romania, Tunisia and Morocco. However, a different distribution of the population has been recorded in Mazara del Vallo, a small town in the province of Trapani, where a Tunisian community justifies the prevalence of Tunisian…

The social role of pediatrics in the past and present times.

2021

AbstractPediatrics and society are closely related. This link is as old as the history of Pediatrics, and dates to the second half of the eighteenth century. The vocation of the first European pediatric schools, indeed, was clinical and scientific, as well as social. The founding fathers of Pediatrics were scientists of great talent, and many of them benefactors and philanthropists. They spent their lives assisting the suffering childhood, and became promoters and organizers of social securities for the poorest and most vulnerable categories. The attention to the problems of abandonment was closely linked to study, prevention, and treatment of pathologies (especially infectious, deficiency …

Global, regional, and national levels and causes of maternal mortality during 1990-2013: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study…

2014

BACKGROUND: The fifth Millennium Development Goal (MDG 5) established the goal of a 75% reduction in the maternal mortality ratio (MMR; number of maternal deaths per 100,000 livebirths) between 1990 and 2015. We aimed to measure levels and track trends in maternal mortality, the key causes contributing to maternal death, and timing of maternal death with respect to delivery.METHODS: We used robust statistical methods including the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm) to analyse a database of data for 7065 site-years and estimate the number of maternal deaths from all causes in 188 countries between 1990 and 2013. We estimated the number of pregnancy-related deaths caused by HIV on the basi…
