The Sociology of Education in Brazil Today
2020
The field of sociology of education in Brazil is marked by a deep institutional fragmentation, being developed both in the Postgraduate Programs in Social Sciences/Sociology and in Education. With the expansion of higher education and other transformations in education systems, Sociology of Education has expanded and gained space in the research agenda of Brazilian sociology. In this article we analyze its development in a recent period, considering the research areas of the postgraduate programs in sociology, as well as its academic production in journals in the last four years. We observed the solidification of education as an area of research in the field of Brazilian sociology, as well …
The Role of Curriculum Theory in Contemporary Higher Education Research and Practice
2017
In the light of recent debates on the possible issues in curriculum studies, formulated particularly in the field of sociology of education, this chapter discusses the role and the importance of curriculum theories in higher education. Focusing on the historical and the conceptual roots of curriculum theory approaches, the argument is that the dispute and the separation between normative and critical roles of curriculum theories are important to overcome in today’s competency-based and outcome-focused context of higher education. Basil Bernstein’s ideas on the vital role of knowledge are discussed in relation to the origins of the so-called crisis in curriculum theories. It is suggested tha…

Sociologie de l'école (3ème édition)
2006
Anti-schoolness in context: the tension between the youth project and the qualifications project
2011
Published version of an article in the journal Social Psychology of Education. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11218-011-9153-3 In this ethnographic study conducted in two classrooms in Norway, grade nine (14-year-olds) in lower secondary school and the first year (16-year-olds) of upper secondary school, attention is drawn to how classroom culture is constituted through relationships between students. Through processes of power, dominance, hegemony and marginalisation, classroom culture forms the conditions for a learning environment, and has different opportunities, dilemmas and costs for the students. As classroom culture is negotiated in contextual and r…
Education and Social Structure
2015
In this chapter Education and Social Structure, Jon P. Knudsen argues that the role and effect of education is strongly integrated with social and cultural structures. In order to understand how education works, one has to understand how it interrelates with the norms and structure of the cultural environment it plays into. The chapter calls for a balanced development strategy, where new initiatives are discussed in relation to the social and historical environment it is part of. The focus moves from the university to the region. Of course we cannot assume that all universities are seen as part of regions. Some draw on students and subject matter from a wider world. However, even the region…

Bullying and social anxiety experiences in university learning situations
2019
This study examines how individuals’ engagement in bullying at school and at university relates to the anxiety they feel in general and in various learning situations in which students interact during their higher education. It was predicted that, of the individuals who have experiences of bullying (in the role of bully, victim, or in a dual role as bully-victim), those who have been subjected to bullying experience more anxiety than do those who have no experience with bullying. A nationally representative sample of Finnish university students (N = 5086) participated in the study by responding to survey questions assessing their experiences of (a) anxiety syndrome, (b) context-specific soc…
