Whereas non-displaced and stable fractures are managed successfully with conservative treatment, there is no general agreement on the surgical strategy for displaced and unstable two- to four-part fractures. Infrared thermal imaging in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal injuries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE. Musculoskeletal injuries occur frequently. Diagnostic tests using ionizing radiation can lead to problems for patients, and infrared thermal imaging could be useful when diagnosing these injuries. CONCLUSION. A systematic review was performed to determine the diagnostic accuracy of infrared thermal imaging in patients with musculoskeletal injuries. A meta-analysis of three studies evaluating stress fractures was performed and found a lack of support for the usefulness of infrared thermal imaging in musculoskeletal injuries diagnosis.
Rapid prototyping modelling in oral and maxillofacial surgery: a two year retrospective study

Background The use of rapid prototyping (RP) models in medicine to construct bony models is increasing. Material and Methods The aim of the study was to evaluate retrospectively the indication for the use of RP models in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Helsinki University Central Hospital during 2009-2010. Also, the used computed tomography (CT) examination – multislice CT (MSCT) or cone beam CT (CBCT) - method was evaluated. Results In total 114 RP models were fabricated for 102 patients. Hydatidosis is a zoonotic disease; human infection occurs through the consumption of food and water contaminated with the eggs of parasites of the Echinococcus type. While the liver is the most common site of infection, involvement of the musculoskeletal system is extremely rare. In the context of musculoskeletal involvement, the spine is the most commonly infected site, while the muscles are rarely infected and account for approximately <1% of cases. Nonreamed flexible locked intramedullary nailing in tibial open fractures

Thirty-nine open unstable tibial shaft fractures were treated with a nonreamed flexible locked intramedullary nail between 1992 and 1995. There were 23 Grade I, 12 Grade II, three Grade IIIA, and one Grade IIIB fractures. The average time of followup assessment was 24 months. The average time to fracture union was 24 weeks. Complications were related in most cases to fractures with highly unstable patterns and extensive soft tissue lesions. There were five (12.5%) delayed unions and one (2.5%) nonunion. Emergent and delayed hybrid external fixation management of tibial pilon fractures: A multicentric retrospective analysis of 80 patients

Objective: To report our experience with the hybrid external fixator in emergency. Methods: We assessed 80 cases of pilon fracture treated with the external fixator during the period of January 2009 and December 2016:55 men (69%) and 30 women (33%) with a mean age of 40 years (range between 16 and 70). About 45 occurred as isolated trauma, 35 instead were politrauma. Each patient underwent standard radiographic examination and a CT examination. Reconstruction of limb-threatening lower extremity defects presents unique challenges. The selected method must provide adequate coverage of exposed bone, joints, and tendons while maximizing function of the limb. The traditional workhorse flaps, the free latissimus dorsi and rectus abdominis flaps, have been associated with donor site morbidity and bulkiness that can impair rehabilitation. We report a case series (n = 18) in which the free serratus anterior muscle flap and split thickness skin graft (STSG) was used for lower limb soft tissue coverage.
