Entire reflective object surface structure understanding based on reflection motion estimation

2015

An sub-segmentation method for the reflective surface structure understanding. The use of reflection motion features as spatiotemporal coherence for video segmentation.Straightforward implementation.A building block for object recognition. The presence of reflection on a surface has been a long-standing problem for object recognition since it brings negative effects on object's color, texture and structural information. Because of that, it is not a trivial task to recognize the surface structure affected by the reflection, especially when the object is entirely reflective. Most of the cases, reflection is considered as noise. In this paper, we propose a novel method for entire reflective obj…

Applying Experimental Research Management to a Technological Process using Taguchi's Method

2018

Abstract The surface quality is dependent on certain cutting process parameters that can vary, causing variations on the surface roughness. The main subject of this paper focuses on the experimental research management applied to a technological process whose final purpose was to determine an equation of the surface roughness depending on the process parameters, obtained by the Al7136 end milling process. The research method used in this paper is the Taguchi's method. According to the research management steps, in order to perform the experimental determination of the surface roughness, an experimental stand used to determine the objective function was presented. The surface roughness equat…

Controlling the Interactions between Soft Colloids via Surface Adsorption

2013

By employing monomer-resolved computer simulations and analytical considerations based on polymer scaling theory, we analyze the conformations and interactions of multiarm star polymers strongly adsorbed on a smooth, two-dimensional plane. We find a stronger stretching of the arms as well as a stronger repulsive, effective interaction than in the three dimensional case. In particular, the star size scales with the number of arms $f$ as $\sim f^{1/4}$ and the effective interaction as $\sim f^{2}$, as opposed to $\sim f^{1/5}$ and $\sim f^{3/2}$, respectively, in three dimensions. Our results demonstrate the dramatic effect that geometric confinement can have on the effective interactions and…

The coupling of the electrostatic potential with the transport and adsorption mechanisms in ion-exchange chromatography systems: Theory and experimen…

2005

The coupling of the constitutive expression for the electrostatic potential as specified through Poisson's equation together with the constitutive equations for the mechanisms of convection, diffusion, electrophoretic migration, and adsorption provides the necessary set of constitutive expressions to be employed in the material balance equations of ion-exchange chromatography systems to construct macroscopic continuum models that could be used to design and simulate the dynamic behavior of systems involving a single charged adsorbate or multiple charged adsorbates. A physically relevant and consistent macroscopic continuum model that can predict, as has been observed experimentally by UV co…

Non-Arrhenius Behavior of Surface Diffusion Near a Phase Transition Boundary

1997

We study the non-Arrhenius behavior of surface diffusion near the second-order phase transition boundary of an adsorbate layer. In contrast to expectations based on macroscopic thermodynamic effects, we show that this behavior can be related to the average microscopic jump rate which in turn is determined by the waiting-time distribution W(t) of single-particle jumps at short times. At long times, W(t) yields a barrier that corresponds to the rate-limiting step in diffusion. The microscopic information in W(t) should be accessible by STM measurements.

Usability Challenges in Surgical Simulator Training

2009

Surgical virtual reality simulators have been taken into use in order to improve surgical skills training. Emergence of simulators increases the need for research and knowledge related to usability of medical simulators. In this study usability of laparoscopic surgical simulator was researched experimentally through combined analysis. Data was gathered with heuristic evaluation, questionnaires, and interviews as well as recorded simulator parameters. Results suggest that the surgical simulator could be more efficient learning and training tool if usability issues such as support and error prevention were reconsidered in more detail. There also seem to be grounds for connecting user support …

A multi-methodology and sustainability-supporting framework for implementation and assessment of a holistic building renovation

Integrated approach to the assessment of waste management systems within the SEA framework

2007

This paper addresses the problem of evaluating the environmental performances of Urban Waste Systems. Specifically, the paper refers to the crucial problem of environmentally analysing the Urban Waste System Management Process. The application of the Dashboard of Sustainability has been deliberately suggested. The method has been selected because of its intrinsic simplicity and because it can provide the simultaneous evaluation of indicators which refer to different fields, such as the Environment, Economics and Quality in Institutional Services. The method has been applied to the city of Palermo. The results obtained have been compared to a couple of ideal scenarios.
