Comparison of different revenue models in SaaS

2012

Cloud computing brings new possibilities for software firms to sell their products within a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. However, although SaaS provides new revenue models, it may not easily achieve a profitable revenue stream. For customers, SaaS promises cost savings related to IT expenses. However, it may be difficult to estimate which revenue model will be best for a given situation. In this paper I present the common revenue models used in SaaS, examining their advantages and disadvantages from the point of view of the software provider and the customer. Active colloidal suspensions: Clustering and phase behavior

2014

We review recent experimental, numerical, and analytical results on active suspensions of self-propelled colloidal beads moving in (quasi) two dimensions. Active colloids form part of the larger theme of active matter, which is noted for the emergence of collective dynamic phenomena away from thermal equilibrium. Both in experiments and computer simulations, a separation into dense aggregates, i.e., clusters, and a dilute gas phase has been reported even when attractive interactions and an alignment mechanism are absent. Here, we describe three experimental setups, discuss the different propelling mechanisms, and summarize the evidence for phase separation. We then compare experimental obse…

Aging effects in simple models for glassy relaxation

2006

Aging effects in the two-time correlation function and the response function after a quench from a high temperature to some low temperature are considered for a simple kinetic random energy model exhibiting stretched exponential relaxation. Because the system reaches thermal equilibrium for long times after the quench, all aging effect are of a transient nature. In particular, the violations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem are considered and it is found that the relation between the response and the two-time correlation function depends on another function, the so-called asymmetry. This asymmetry vanishes in equilibrium but cannot be neglected in the aging regime. It is found that pl…

Simulation of fluid-solid coexistence in finite volumes: A method to study the properties of wall-attached crystalline nuclei

2012

The Asakura-Oosawa model for colloid-polymer mixtures is studied by Monte Carlo simulations at densities inside the two-phase coexistence region of fluid and solid. Choosing a geometry where the system is confined between two flat walls, and a wall-colloid potential that leads to incomplete wetting of the crystal at the wall, conditions can be created where a single nanoscopic wall-attached crystalline cluster coexists with fluid in the remainder of the simulation box. Following related ideas that have been useful to study heterogeneous nucleation of liquid droplets at the vapor-liquid coexistence, we estimate the contact angles from observations of the crystalline clusters in thermal equil…

Computer Simulation Studies of Chain Dynamics in Polymer Brushes

2012

Center-of-mass and single monomer motion in grafted chains comprising a strongly stretched polymer brush in thermal equilibrium are studied by large scale molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations of a coarse-grained model. Good solvent conditions are assumed. Our findings seriously question earlier theoretical predictions about the relaxation described by Rouse dynamics of brush coatings. Thus, the correlation functions of parallel and perpendicular components of the mean distance of the center-of-mass from the grafting site, the squared gyration radius and end-to-end distance, are found to deviate strongly from a simple exponential decay. While the relaxation times extracted from the…

Nonstationary flow surface theory for modeling the viscoplastic behaviors of soils

2016

Abstract This paper presents a three-dimensional elastic viscoplastic model that can describe the time-dependent behaviors of soft clays. The constitutive model is formulated based on the nonstationary flow surface theory and incorporates new developments, including (i) an improved definition of the nonstationary flow surface that is capable of capturing the stress–strain behaviors under different loading paths, (ii) a unique stress–strain—viscoplastic-strain-rate equation that is able to explicitly describe the nonstationary flow surface, and (iii) a final stable state concept that identifies the final equilibrium state at the end of creep and stress relaxation, which is also used to simpl…

Solid state 13C-NMR methodology for the cellulose composition studies of the shells of Prunus dulcis and their derived cellulosic materials.

2020

Lignocellulosic fibers and microcellulose have been obtained by simple alkaline treatment from softwood al- mond shells. In particular, the Prunus dulcis Miller (D.A.) Webb. was considered as a agro industrial waste largely available in southern Italy. The materials before and after purification have been characterized by 13C CPMAS NMR spectroscopy methodology. A proper data analysis provided the relative composition of lignin and holo- cellulose at each purification step and the results were compared with thermogravimetric analysis and FT-IR. To value the possibility of using this material in a circular economy framework, the fibrous cellulosic material was used to manufacture a handmade c…

A novel dynamic multi-model relevance feedback procedure for content-based image retrieval

2016

This paper deals with the problem of image retrieval in large databases with a big semantic gap by a relevance feedback procedure. We present a novel algorithm for modelling the users's preferences in the content-based image retrieval system. The proposed algorithm considers the probability of an image belonging to the set of those sought by the user, and estimates the parameters of several local logistic regression models whose inputs are the low-level image features. A Principal Component Analysis method is applied to the original vector to reduce its high dimensionality. The relevance probabilities predicted by these local models are combined by means of a weighted average. These weights …

Evaluation of an Educational Video Production Environment

2019

In this paper, a cloud-based solution for the easy production and meaningful distribution of video-based learning material is presented and evaluated. Using this system, lecturers can produce video material with their own computers anywhere, at any time. The system enables the production of longer lecture videos as well as short videos, each containing only one of the course's topics. The system also handles video sharing for students automatically in a meaningful way through the course's table of contents. An evaluation of the first production version of the video production and distribution system was carried out by collecting qualitative material from the lecturers and students.
