Large-scale analysis of SARS-CoV-2 spike-glycoprotein mutants demonstrates the need for continuous screening of virus isolates

2021

AbstractDue to the widespread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SARS-CoV-2 genome is evolving in diverse human populations. Several studies already reported different strains and an increase in the mutation rate. Particularly, mutations in SARS-CoV-2 spike-glycoprotein are of great interest as it mediates infection in human and recently approved mRNA vaccines are designed to induce immune responses against it.We analyzed 146,917 SARS-CoV-2 genome assemblies and 2,393 NGS datasets from GISAID, NCBI Virus and NCBI SRA archives focusing on non-synonymous mutations in the spike protein.Only around 13.8% of the samples contained the wild-type spike protein with no variation from the reference. Among…

Synthesis and Characterization of a New Fully Aromatic LCP

1996

Abstract Liquid crystal polymers (LCP)are a relatively new class of polymers with very interesting and unusual properties. In particular, easy processability and outstanding mechanical and barrier properties make them very attractive. Unfortunately the high stiffness of their chains often leads to compounds having very high melting points and consequently to unprocessable materials. By adding a flexible segments in the chain backbone the LCPs become processable at lower temperatures but lower properties are displayed. A new rigid liquid crystalline polymer, having excellent physical properties, good processing temperature and a good cost/performance compromise, is described in this work. Th…

Polymer Films in the Normal-Liquid and Supercooled State: A Review of Recent Monte Carlo Simulation Results

2000

This paper reviews recent Monte Carlo simulation studies of the glassy behavior in thin polymer films. The simulations employ a version of the bond-fluctuation lattice model, in which the glass transition is driven by the competition between a stiffening of the polymers and their dense packing in the melt. The melt is geometrically confined between two impenetrable walls separated by distances ranging from once to about fifteen times the bulk radius of gyration. The confinement influences static and dynamic properties of the films: Chains close to the wall preferentially orient parallel to it. This orientation tendency propagates through the film and leads to a layer structure at low temper…

Dragging a Polymer Chain into a Nanotube and Subsequent Release

2008

We present a scaling theory and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation results for a flexible polymer chain slowly dragged by one end into a nanotube. We also describe the situation when the completely confined chain is released and gradually leaves the tube. MC simulations were performed for a self-avoiding lattice model with a biased chain growth algorithm, the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method. The nanotube is a long channel opened at one end and its diameter $D$ is much smaller than the size of the polymer coil in solution. We analyze the following characteristics as functions of the chain end position $x$ inside the tube: the free energy of confinement, the average end-to-end distance, the averag…

Dynamics of Glassy Polymer Melts in Confined Geometry: A Monte Carlo Simulation

1996

Dynamic properties of a dense polymer melt confined between two hard walls are investigated over a wide range of temperatures by dynamic Monte Carlo simulation. The temperature interval ranges from the ordinary liquid to the strongly supercooled melt. The influence of temperature, density and confinement on the polymer dynamics is studied by various mean-square displacements, structural relaxation functions and quantities derived from them (relaxation times, apparent diffusion coefficients, monomer relaxation rates), yielding the following results: The motion of the monomers and polymers close to the walls is enhanced in parallel, but reduced in perpendicular direction. This dynamic anisotr…

Growing range of correlated motion in a polymer melt on cooling towards the glass transition

1999

Many liquids cooled to low temperatures form glasses (amorphous solids) instead of crystals. As the glass transition is approached, molecules become localized and relaxation times increase by many orders of magnitude1. Many features of this ‘slowing down’ are reasonably well described2 by the mode-coupling theory of supercooled liquids3. The ideal form of this theory predicts a dynamical critical temperature T c at which the molecules become permanently trapped in the ‘cage’ formed by their neighbours, and vitrification occurs. Although there is no sharp transition, because molecules do eventually escape their cage, its signature can still be observed in real and simulated liquids. Unlike c…

Study of the impact of wheat flour type, flour particle size and protein content in a cake-like dough: Proton mobility and rheological properties ass…

2012

International audience; The study of food products is always a challenge due to the number of components involved and the interactions that may occur between them. Water is a particular ingredient which interacts with all hydrophilic compounds, although affinities may differ for limiting water amount. During this study, results obtained using H-1 NMR on cake dough were compared in terms of the effects of flour type (soft or medium hard), the addition of gluten (5%-20%) and the use of soft flour fractions (flour particle fractions smaller or larger than 50 mu m). T-2 values and the signal intensities of different proton populations were studied as a function of the wheat protein contents of …

Photoinduced mass transport in soft materials

2011

The surface relief grating formation in amorphous As2S3 and azo-benzene polymer films strongly depends on the polarization state of recording beams. The surface relief grating formation efficiency of s-s and p-p recording beam combination can be essentially enhanced by additional illumination with orthogonal polarization. It is shown that the direction of mass transport on the film surface is determined by the direction of light electric vector.

Stratification of polymer mixtures in drying droplets: Hydrodynamics and diffusion

2020

We study the evaporation-induced stratification of a mixture of short and long polymer chains in a drying droplet using molecular simulations. We systematically investigate the effects of hydrodynamic interactions (HI) on this process by comparing hybrid simulations accounting for HI between polymers through the multiparticle collision dynamics technique with free-draining Langevin dynamics simulations neglecting the same. We find that the dried supraparticle morphologies are homogeneous when HI are included but are stratified in core--shell structures (with the short polymers forming the shell) when HI are neglected. The simulation methodology unambiguously attributes this difference to th…

Phase Separation and Nematic Order in Lyotropic Solutions: Two Types of Polymers with Different Stiffnesses in a Common Solvent

2021

The interplay of the isotropic-nematic transition and phase separation in lyotropic solutions of two types of semiflexible macromolecules with pronounced difference in chain stiffness is studied by Density Functional Theory and Molecular Dynamics simulations. While the width of the isotropic-nematic two-phase coexistence region is narrow for solutions with a single type of semiflexible chain, the two-phase coexistence region widens for solutions containing two types of chains with rather disparate stiffness. In the nematic phase, both types of chains contribute to the nematic order, with intermediate values of the order parameter compared to the corresponding single component solutions. As …
