Modeling suggests that oblique extension facilitates rifting and continental break-up
2012
[1] In many cases the initial stage of continental break-up was and is associated with oblique rifting. That includes break-up in the Southern and Equatorial Atlantic, separation from eastern and western Gondwana as well as many recent rift systems, like Gulf of California, Ethiopia Rift and Dead Sea fault. Using a simple analytic mechanical model and advanced numerical, thermomechanical modeling techniques we investigate the influence of oblique extension on the required tectonic force in a three-dimensional setting. While magmatic processes have been already suggested to affect rift evolution, we show that additional mechanisms emerge due to the three-dimensionality of an extensional syst…
Numerical analysis of ionosphere disturbances and Schumann mode splitting in the Earth-ionosphere cavity
2008
[1] The variability of ionosphere properties plays an important role in the Schumann resonances (SR), amplitudes, frequencies, and Q factor. Therefore, as atmosphere ionization is related to solar activity, SR could be devised as a source of indirect parameters that locally from the surface of the Earth could provide space weather information. A proper understanding of this link to SR parameters can be obtained through finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations, specifically with the numerically obtained modes and frequencies that relate frequency shifts to the day-night asymmetry and polar inhomogeneities. Day-Night asymmetry is observed to have a minor influence in SR; however, larg…
Carbon Stocks in Peri-Urban Areas: A Case Study of Remote Sensing Capabilities
2014
Peri-urban areas are the extension of cities into contiguous areas, where households and farms coexist. Carbon stocks (CSs) assessment, a concept here extended to urban features, has not yet been studied in depth over peri-urban areas due to uncertainties in such CSs quantification, level of detail required about construction materials, and the high spatial variability of those stocks. Remote sensing (RS)-based techniques have been successfully utilized in urban areas for assessing phenomena such as soil sealing, sprawl patterns, and dynamics of surface imperviousness, especially focusing on land cover classification at high to medium spatial scales. Over the floodplain study area of Emilia…
Lichens Used as Monitors of Atmospheric Pollution Around Agadir (Southwestern Morocco)—A Case Study Predating Lead-Free Gasoline
2011
More than 30 epiphytic lichens, collected in Agadir (Morroco) and along a 150-km transect from the Atlantic Ocean eastward, were analyzed for their metal content and lead isotopic composition. This dataset was used to evaluate atmospheric metal contamination and the impact of the city on the surrounding area. The concentrations of Cu, Pb, and Zn (average ± 1 SD) were 20.9 ± 15.2 μg g−1, 13.8 ± 9.0 μg g−1, and 56.6 ± 26.6 μg g−1, respectively, with the highest values observed in lichens collected within the urban area. The 206Pb/207Pb and 208Pb/207Pb ratios in the lichens varied from 1.146 to 1.186 and from 2.423 to 2.460, respectively. Alkyllead-gasoline sold in Morocco by the major petrol …

I risultat…
Autocorrelation Metrics to Estimate Soil Moisture Persistence From Satellite Time Series: Application to Semiarid Regions
2021
Satellite-derived soil moisture (SM) products have become an important information source for the study of land surface processes in hydrology and land monitoring. Characterizing and estimating soil memory and persistence from satellite observations is of paramount relevance, and has deep implications in ecology, water management, and climate modeling. In this work, we address the problem of SM persistence estimation from microwave sensors using several autocorrelation metrics that, unlike traditional approaches, build on accurate estimates of the autocorrelation function from nonuniformly sampled time series. We show how the choice of the autocorrelation estimator can have a dramatic impac…
A new automated single ring infiltrometer for Beerkan infiltration experiments
2014
A new automated compact device was developed to collect data from single ring infiltration experiment. The infiltrometer consists of a containment ring in which a small quasi-constant head of water (i.e. a few mm) is maintained by a Mariotte reservoir and a very inexpensive data acquisition system, based on the open source microcontroller platform Arduino, and a differential pressure transducer. The design can easily be reproduced and operated. The infiltrometer was tested in a citrus orchard on a sandy loam soil. A simple methodology was applied for an accurate data acquisition from the initial stage of the process and to minimize the disturbance of the soil surface. A new approach to proc…
Landsat TM/ETM+ and tree-ring based assessment of spatiotemporal patterns of the autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata) in northernmost Fennoscandia
2010
Abstract We used fine-spatial resolution remotely sensed data combined with tree-ring parameters in order to assess and reconstruct disturbances in mountain birch ( Betula pubescens ) forests caused by Epirrita autumnata (autumnal moth). Research was conducted in the area of Lake Tornetrask in northern Sweden where we utilized five proxy parameters to detect insect outbreak events over the 19th and 20th centuries. Digital change detection was applied on three pairs of multi-temporal NDVI images from Landsat TM/ETM+ to detect significant reductions in the photosynthetic activity of forested areas during disturbed growing seasons. An image segmentation gap-fill procedure was developed in orde…
Angular dependence of the emissivity of bare soils in the thermal infrared
2009
Emissivity is one of the main factors to take into account when studying processes that take place in the Earth surface by using radiance measurements in the thermal infrared, such as surface energy balance, land surface temperature (LST) retrieval, classification of different types of surface, etc. For this reason it is necessary to study the factors that can influence the emissivity. The present work evaluates one of these factors: the variation of the emissivity with the zenithal observation angle over bare soils, specifically the variation of the relative emissivity calculated from measurements of radiances, almost simultaneous, at nadir (0o) and at a certain angle (Θ). The measurements…
