Infection Load and Prevalence of Novel Viruses Identified from the Bank Vole Do Not Associate with Exposure to Environmental Radioactivity

2019

Bank voles (Myodes glareolus) are host to many zoonotic viruses. As bank voles inhabiting areas contaminated by radionuclides show signs of immunosuppression, resistance to apoptosis, and elevated DNA repair activity, we predicted an association between virome composition and exposure to radionuclides. To test this hypothesis, we studied the bank vole virome in samples of plasma derived from animals inhabiting areas of Ukraine (contaminated areas surrounding the former nuclear power plant at Chernobyl, and uncontaminated areas close to Kyiv) that differed in level of environmental radiation contamination. We discovered four strains of hepacivirus and four new virus sequences: two adeno-asso…

Pancuronium improves the neuromuscular transmission defect of human organophosphate intoxication.

1990

Two patients with acute severe organophosphate intoxication showed (1) single evoked compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) with repetitive discharges and (2) prominent decremental responses of CMAP with 20 and 50 Hz supramaximal nerve stimulation. Following the intravenous injection of single small doses of pancuronium, marked improvement in these abnormalities occurred and persisted for several hours. We postulate that the physiologic improvement following low-dose pancuronium results from blockade of acetylcholine receptors, especially those located on the terminal axon responsible for antidromic backfiring.

Fluid challenges in intensive care: the FENICE study: a global inception cohort study

2015

Background: Fluid challenges (FCs) are one of the most commonly used therapies in critically ill patients and represent the cornerstone of hemodynamic management in intensive care units. There are clear benefits and harms from fluid therapy. Limited data on the indication, type, amount and rate of an FC in critically ill patients exist in the literature. The primary aim was to evaluate how physicians conduct FCs in terms of type, volume, and rate of given fluid; the secondary aim was to evaluate variables used to trigger an FC and to compare the proportion of patients receiving further fluid administration based on the response to the FC. Methods: This was an observational study conducted i…

The Effect of Indobufen on the Activities of Selected Rat Liver Phase I and Phase II Drug Metabolizing Enzymes, Peroxisomal β-oxidation and Hepatic G…

1994

Abstract Oral administration of indobufen to male rats for three days at daily doses of 5, 10 and 20 mg kg−1 resulted in no changes in liver total glutathione, cytosolic glutathione S-transferases or microsomal epoxide hydrolase. Reduced glutathione appeared slightly diminished to about 84% of control at the highest dose level. Microsomal cytochrome P450-dependent ethoxyresorufin O-de-ethylase and pentoxyresorufin de-alkylase activities were decreased to 64% (not significantly) and 67% of control at the lowest dose level. 6α- and 7α-Hydroxytestosterone activities were decreased to 67 and 68% of control at the highest dose level. Cyanide-insensitive peroxisomal fatty acid β-oxidation was inc…

Farinomalein derivatives from an unidentified endophytic fungus isolated from the mangrove plant Avicennia marina

2012

Five farinomalein derivatives including three new compounds, farinomaleins C–E (3–5), and one new isoindoline congener (6) were isolated from an unidentified endophytic fungus obtained from the inner tissues of healthy leaves of the mangrove plant Avicennia marina from Oman. The structures of the new compounds were unambiguously elucidated on the basis of their mass, as well as one and two dimensional NMR spectroscopic data.

From the solution processing of hydrophilic molecules to polymer-phthalocyanine hybrid materials for ammonia sensing in high humidity atmospheres.

2014

We have prepared different hybrid polymer-phthalocyanine materials by solution processing, starting from two sulfonated phthalocyanines, s-CoPc and CuTsPc, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyethylene glycol (PEG), poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) (PAA-AM), poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and polyaniline (PANI) as polymers. We also studied the response to ammonia (NH3) of resistors prepared from these sensing materials. The solvent casted films, prepared from s-CoPc and PVP, PEG and PAA-AM, were highly insulating and very sensitive to the relative humidity (RH) variation. The incorporation of s-CoPc in PDDA by means of layer-by-layer (LBL) technique allowed to stabilize the fi…

A Visualizable Test Problem Generator for Many-Objective Optimization

2022

Visualizing the search behavior of a series of points or populations in their native domain is critical in understanding biases and attractors in an optimization process. Distancebased many-objective optimization test problems have been developed to facilitate visualization of search behavior in a two-dimensional design space with arbitrarily many objective functions. Previous works have proposed a few commonly seen problem characteristics into this problem framework, such as the definition of disconnected Pareto sets and dominance resistant regions of the design space. The authors’ previous work has advanced this research further by providing a problem generator to automatically create use…

Preclinical Activity of New [1,2]Oxazolo[5,4-e]isoindole Derivatives in Diffuse Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma

2016

A series of 22 derivatives of the [1,2]oxazolo[5,4-e]isoindole system were synthesized through an efficient and versatile procedure that involves the annelation of the [1,2]oxazole moiety to the isoindole ring, producing derivatives with a wide substitution pattern. The structure-activity relationship indicates that the N-4-methoxybenzyl group appears crucial for potent activity. In addition, the presence of a 6-phenyl moiety is important and the best activity is reached with a 3,4,5-trimethoxy substituent. The most active compound, bearing both the structural features, was able to inhibit tumor cell proliferation at nanomolar concentrations when tested against the full NCI human tumor cell…
